Spring2012StencilHop-500
Today's stencil hop features two very talented ladies who are experienced stencil hoppers, back for more stencil action:

  • Leslie Tucker Jenison: Leslie is a prolific quilter based in San Antonio, TX.  She has appeared numerous times on Quilting Arts TV and has an hour-long instructional DVD called DIY Surface Design.  She has been published in myriad books and magazines, including Quilting Arts Magazine.
  • Tammy Tutterow: Tammy teaches a ton of online classes, both on her blog and at Big Picture Classes.  She also has a roster of upcoming in-person classes, including several in Italy!  Be sure to check out her etsy shop for project kits, jewelry, and lots of ribbon.

I sent these two ladies the Flower Piecing stencil:

FlowerPiecing
Given the title, it probably won't be surprising to you that when I originally designed the stencil I had intended for people to trace the shapes and create paper pieced flowers like so:

Tag-wm
Tag-wm
I think there are a lot of different possibilities and configurations you could do with just these few parts.

I also think the overall pattern of the stencil is awesome.  You can make gorgeous patterned paper like this:

Patternedpaper-wm
Paper that I used to create this surprisingly simple and graphic layout:

MyGuy-wm
Watch the video to see me make the paper and then put the layout together:

I used the 12×12 version of the stencil to create an overall pattern on some green fabric, which in turn I stitched into this cute little clutch:

If you would like to win the Flower Piecing Stencil in 12×12 and 6×6 leave an answer to the following question in the comments section:

Which of today's hop projects made you think differently about this stencil?

If you don't know how to leave a comment, click here.

Thanks for stopping by!  Now, get hopping:

  • Another gorgeous stencil! I really liked seeing it used on the fabric to create the clutch. I love the idea and can’t wait to try out stenciling on fabric now!

  • While I absolutely love the bag, the first project made me think twice (and may 3, 4 and 5 times!) about how to use a stencil. New to this scene, I have only thought of them as a means of controlling how paint or ink gets on paper! So excited – thanks!

  • Stencils on fabric! Love the ideas that you seem to always challenge each and everyone of us. I would have only thought about painting or spraying the stencil but you show the piecing which was great. The others show the foil which not in a million years would i have thought about that. Now i have other ideas for the other stencils that i have. Thanks so much for the HOPS love the inspiration/motivation that i gain from them!!

  • Do you know how many old toothbrushes I’ve just toss away? LOVE Leslie’s idea of using them to “pounce” color onto the stencil. And Tammy’s foil technique is just amazing. I have alcohol inks just waiting to be used and this is a perfect project and it is just so lovely. Thank you gals for sharing your talents with us!

  • I hadn’t thought of the paper pieced flower but i love the idea. Tammy’s foil/metal tag is just great and i will be trying that very soon. I like the idea of using it as a straight stencil but kind of patchworking or chequer board it – one square using the stencil and then flip it so next square is the reverse pattern.

  • Well, believe it or not, the intended usage. I have never used my stencils to paper piece anything. I usually use them with mists. Sometimes I’ll use paint. So, the paper pieced flowers are very different (and very cool).

Therefore, I learned something new and valuable from every one of these wonderful blog posts today. Thanks so much.

  • What a beautifull stencil! Tammy’s foil technique was new to me, it doesn’t only make me think differently about the stencil or more the ways to use it, but makes me wonder how I can use foil in other ways too.
    Thanks for wonderfull insight.

  • Hmmm . . . I’m torn. I love the idea of using stencils as pieced elements – in part because I enjoy the dimensionality of the results and because I’m imagining the therapeutic/zen value of cutting out all those little pieces : ) I also like Leslie’s re-use of the baby wipe. I keep saving mine because it seems such a waste to toss out all that gorgeous color, and yet for some reason my brain hasn’t clicked in on how to use them, so they’re just piling up. I was also intrigued by the idea of using a toothbrush to apply the color.
I really need the Prize Patrol Van to bring me one of those over-sized checks for $10 million so I can afford my addiction to art supplies and so I can rent a bigger apartment with a room just for art!!
    Thanks for the inspiration, Julie.

Also loved your use of the wood grain stencil on your stencil. I’ve been looking for it in local stores….guess, I will have to buy online. Thank you!

I probably wouldn’t have thought to cut and piece like that, even though when you’ve seen it done it seems obvious. Summer break is only days away…itching to create!

  • I own tons of stencil and never once thought of cutting them out and piecing them on my works. Thanks for the idea. I will be busy for months! LOL. I just received the circles and stars stencil ( I ordered it!) and have had fun creating a scrapbook for c #18 grand(great) child! He’s a boy so that makes it perfect for that stencil.

  • Gosh, I can’t really decide…each of you made me think differently about this stencil. I love how Leslie used the toothbrush to stencil and the soft effect it produced. And I love how Tammy used the metal tape and then colored it with Copics.(Would NOT have thought of that.) And Julie, I never realized this stencil was intended for piecing flowers! I like the idea of stenciling, cutting it out and…Voila! Instant Garden! I don’t have this stencil yet…thanks for the chance to win!

I would have likes to see something done with Leslie’s baby wipes and fabric piece. what I find most inspiring about you, Julie is your finished projects. That purse is adorable and I hadn’t even considered cutting any out except funky tags. Thank You.

  • Go Julie!!!!
I do like the Pieced Paper Flower as it is great and can stand alone as a nice focal point. You just keep coming up with the brilliant ideas!
I am always open to experimenting on all sorts of papers and old projects that were not the favorites…the results can be quite surprising.

  • Hi Julie,
Actually your blog made me think differently about the stencil. I would not have thought to do it as a paper piecing stencil (I really like the flower it makes) but would have used it just to make patterns. Now I am going to check out the few other stencils I have and see if they can be adapted in this way.
    Thanks Julie.

  • Oooh! I really liked the metal embossing Tammy did with your stencil! I just bought a metal embossing set, and am so excited to use it, but all I’ve done so far is open the box so I could touch and coo all over each tool (texture wheels!!). Hmm…actually, I squealed over the tools. Anyway, it was fabulous to see Tammy use your stencil with the metal foil and then to also use it on paper and then put them together. It was a perfect, doable project, and I’d love to be able to try it out with your stencils:)

I have 3 of your dvd downloads. My husband loves the stamp carving one. We both love your outlook of art doesn’t have to be perfect Thanks for all your inspiration.
