Spring2012StencilHop-500
Don't you love stencil hop days?  I know that I do!  I'm a bit sad to think that we only have four more hops after this.  I can't even tell you how difficult it was to choose which designs to feature.  For the Spring Hop we only had eleven spots, but twenty-one stencil designs!  If you're ever wanting to know which of The Crafter's Workshop stencils I designed, you can see all the Balzer Designs stencils here (there are thirty-nine designs so far, with more to come this Summer!  Yay!)

Enough blathering, let's get to this week's amazing lineup of guests:

And what stencil did these ladies get to play with?  I call it Wood Parquet

LOGO…and you can probably guess why.  The Crafter's Workshop does have a regular woodgrain stencil, which is awesome, but I wanted something more delicate.  This stencil has a lacey quality that I really like.

It works as a strong design element.  I used the 6×6 version to decorate this altered book spread:

JFBp5-6-sm
It also works when you use it more subtley to add a bit of tone-on-tone texture and atmsophere.  I used the 6×6 version to create the soft background for this outdoorsy layout:

OhToBeA6YearOldBoy-wm
OhToBeA6YearOldBoyDetail2-wm
Remember, you don't have to use the full stencil image.  You are the boss of your stencils.

OhToBeA6YearOldBoyDetail1-wm
You can see that I let the stenciled image sort of fade into the kraft background.  I really like the look.

For this next layout I went for texture:

SoSmall-wm
SoSmallDetail1-wm
You can really see the dimension of the gesso in these detail photos:

SoSmallDetail2-wm
SoSmallDetail2-wm
And the precision!  I used the 12×12 version of the stencil with super heavy gesso and the 6×6 version of the stencil with Distress Ink.

GessovsDistress-wm
Watch the video for the how-to:

Watch it on Vimeo.  Watch it on YouTube.

Finally, this stencil makes a great background for a card.

ThankYouCard-wm
I applied Versamark Ink through the Wood Parquet stencil and embossed the design with embossing powder.

ThankYouCardDetail-wm
If you'd like to win the Wood Parquet stencil in 6×6 and 12×12, leave an answer to the following question in the comments section of this blog:

Which of the ladies in today's hop has a style closest to your own?

  • I think the subtle background style has been mine in the past. I find myself going for more bold texture and colors now. Love that stencil! It’s a ‘gotta-have’!

  • This is a fabulous stencil, I am amazed by all the different effects you can create with it. I particularily love the dreamy soft effect you got on the kraft paper layout. The ladies work was all amazing too, I think my style is closest to Marcy’s – but no where near as good as her!

  • I love this stencil and everything you did with it. The hop was great. I’d say it’s a tie as to who is more my style. I am more of a scrapper so that would be Marcy but I have taken up art journaling and Paula’s style is very similar to mine and I always use a quote that way on my journal pages.

  • Hmm.. that’s a good question. I like it all so much it is really hard to choose one. I guess Marcy Penner’s style would be closest to something like I try.

  • If I had to pick just one, I would say Marcy has my style (or maybe I have her style). I think I have a lot of Paula’s elements thrown in with Macy’s style.

My style ressembles more the style of Paula Phillips. I do not pretend to be a master at layering the way she is though.
Thanks for all the inspiration you put out here on the net.

I need more order and a relational aspect to my projects. But when I’m looking at artists on the internet, I’m always drawn to your blog and Paula’s blog.

I’d say my style is probably closest to Marcy Penner’s. A little more CAS and I’m more likely to use the stencils for scrapbooking although I do want to get into mixed media too. Love these stencil hops and I’m so glad that you do them!

  • Another great stencil hop, as always! Lately I’ve noticed that my pages have a clean feeling with some artsy touches – usually because I’ve taken the inks or paints to an element I’ve added later. So in that respect my style is similar to Marcy’s – but I really want to develop a more organic style like yours, Julie. I always love how your pages turn out!

Thanks for the chance to win one of your stencils to add to my growing stash of them.

  • Love the stencil with the “super heavy gesso”. I was cracking up, because I thought that was your descriptive term for it, then I clicked the link to see what it’s called to look for it at the store….Super Heavy Gesso. Got it! I feel I have no defined style that one would look at works in my collection and say, “Oh, that’s so ‘Lisa’,” so I am going to have to say that right NOW I am working on an art journal page that is similar to Paula’s Wild Ride, and I am drawn to Marcy’s Long Ago layout but would probably have added some background stenciling like in your To Be A Boy layout. And Tracy, I am not a fabric artist, but love what you did!

I feel closer to Paula Philips and Traci Bunkers and I visit their blog quite often even for scrapbooking that I practise in a way that is different from Mary Penner’s.

I feel closer to Paula Philips and Traci Bunkers and I visit their blog quite often even for scrapbooking that I practise in a way that is different from Mary Penner’s.

  • I LOVE all the styles on the hop today. I think my own style is still very much evloving. Right now, I am drawn to the fresh, clean look of Marcy Penner. I particularly like how she made the backgroud so subtle and I am in to layering. Like I said, love it all ๐Ÿ™‚ Tammy

  • I love what everyone has done with the stencils (great idea for fabric with Traci) but I would say that Julie is closest to what I do. Not so much in style but I use my stencils in the same way-with modeling paste, acrylic paint, sprays…on art journal pages & scrapbooks layouts. This would be a great one for me to win-it’s one of the few stencils I don’t have!!!! My name is Karen & I am a stencil addict.

It’s a difficult question to answer. Maybe i have a little bit of the three ladies. i’m Canadian as Paula, but just a beginner as an art journalist. I’m a scrapbooker but not as neat as Marcy. I really like to do back ground it’s my favorite thing, a little bit of paint and stamp just like Tracy. Maybe i have a little bit of you too, Julie. I really like stencil…
Your video for the wooden parket stencil is amazing!

Actually I haven’t done some of the layering Marcy has done but that would be my first leap before some of the mixed media. I loved this hop and seeing the ideas and final products all using the same stencils. It amazes me still how versatile one item in our craft stash can be.

  • I don’t really have a style of my own. I sort of try whatever looks fun. I love Traci’s bright neon colors, Marcy’s sentimental layout, Paula’s great media techniques, and the way you combine art play with memory keeping, but the only thing I know for certain that I like is trying everything. My work shifts constantly across all my creative hobbies because I keep finding new things to try. I don’t yet like the idea of settling down and finding a “look” or a “voice” because I’m 28, married, with 3 kids. Art is where I get to be frivolous, promiscuous, superfluous, and selfish. I don’t want a style. I want a party.

  • I wish I could say that one of these talented gals shared a scrap of their style with me. I, alas, have no style. I do appreciate your style! I just picked up a CW stencil and am really looking forward to trying out some gesso with it. Thanks!

  • My style is naturally probably most like Marcy Penner’s, but I love what you did with the gesso and really want to try that–so I’m kind of torn!

  • I think Paula Philips is the closest to my style…I have always loved her use of colors and her backgrounds. She was one of the first journal artist I had stumbled upon which inspired me to search for more about it.
Love Love Love the textures you created with this stencil! What a fun design. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanx to all for sharing

  • Your stencils are absolutely inspirational…I am not at all artistic and always felt that using rubber stamps and stencils was “cheating”. No more. Now that I have discovered your blog, I see how one can become enthused about creating his/her own works of art. Thank you so much for bringing color and excitement into my life. I will never need a therapist.

  • Love this stencil, you can do so much with it! I looked at all the styles and I love the ideas everyone came up with. Traci’s bold print really appealed to me, but the subtlety of the double print I like too..As I’m new to mixed media journaling I dont have a real style yet, I’m experimenting and playing :)I like your work very much. Thanks for the chance of winning

  • I really enjoy these stencil hops you’ve been having – always fascinating to see so many different expressions from one tool. I really don’t know what my style is yet since I’m still kinda new to actually making things, but so appreciate the diverse styles you feature.

  • Like another poster, I didn’t think I’d care for this stencil design (going by the name), but I love it! I’m primarily a jewelry artist, and I often use a wood grain design to pattern metal in my work, so I really do love this. I’d say the journaling style I aspire to is most like Traci Bunkers.
