Don't you love stencil hop days? I know that I do! I'm a bit sad to think that we only have four more hops after this. I can't even tell you how difficult it was to choose which designs to feature. For the Spring Hop we only had eleven spots, but twenty-one stencil designs! If you're ever wanting to know which of The Crafter's Workshop stencils I designed, you can see all the Balzer Designs stencils here (there are thirty-nine designs so far, with more to come this Summer! Yay!)
Enough blathering, let's get to this week's amazing lineup of guests:
- Traci Bunkers: Traci is a two-time creative book author: The Art Journal Workshop and Print & Stamp Lab. Her layered pages, full of color, photos, and personal stories are very inspiring. Be sure to check out her shop of artful goodies.
- Marcy Penner: Since stumbling upon Marcy's blog I've become addicted to her clean meets artsy scrapbooking style. Marcy has a cool shop full of fun papercrafting goodies. She is on the design team for October Afternoon.
- Paula Phillips: Paula is an accomplished art journaler. Be sure to check out her ustream channel, where she frequently broadcasts super cool tutorials, and don't forget about her DVD: Layered & Textured Backgrounds.
And what stencil did these ladies get to play with? I call it Wood Parquet…
…and you can probably guess why. The Crafter's Workshop does have a regular woodgrain stencil, which is awesome, but I wanted something more delicate. This stencil has a lacey quality that I really like.
It works as a strong design element. I used the 6×6 version to decorate this altered book spread:
It also works when you use it more subtley to add a bit of tone-on-tone texture and atmsophere. I used the 6×6 version to create the soft background for this outdoorsy layout:
Remember, you don't have to use the full stencil image. You are the boss of your stencils.
You can see that I let the stenciled image sort of fade into the kraft background. I really like the look.
For this next layout I went for texture:
You can really see the dimension of the gesso in these detail photos:
And the precision! I used the 12×12 version of the stencil with super heavy gesso and the 6×6 version of the stencil with Distress Ink.

Finally, this stencil makes a great background for a card.
I applied Versamark Ink through the Wood Parquet stencil and embossed the design with embossing powder.

This is a fabulous stencil, I am amazed by all the different effects you can create with it. I particularily love the dreamy soft effect you got on the kraft paper layout. The ladies work was all amazing too, I think my style is closest to Marcy’s – but no where near as good as her!

i haven’t done much scrapbooking this past year, but i love the messy painty look of your page, julie. if i had to choose a style closest to my own, it’d be a cross between yours and Traci’s. When I saw the name of this stencil, I thought no hum….but as usual you totally made something cool that I want. Solo….well…since I am a complete newbie to this and I have been following you like everyday, I would say that my style is like yours but in an more simpler student kind of way.

The projects with this stencil were a nice surprise. As always the projects really help figure out what you can do with the stencils and this one will be on my wish-list now. I feel closer to Paula Philips and Traci Bunkers and I visit their blog quite often even for scrapbooking that I practise in a way that is different from Mary Penner’s.

I LOVE all the styles on the hop today. I think my own style is still very much evloving. Right now, I am drawn to the fresh, clean look of Marcy Penner. I particularly like how she made the backgroud so subtle and I am in to layering. Like I said, love it all 🙂 Tammy

your textured background is the project closest to my style if i have one. haven’t had enough time yet to really develop a style. i also like Tracy’s fabric a lot, although i would have added critters to it instead of passport stamps.

LOVE these stencil hops!!! I guess I would say that Paula’s style is closest to mine although I tend to be all over the place style-wise, depending on where the spirit moves me at any given time 🙂

Great stencil and I love how everyone uses it. My style is closest to Paula’s, as I love layers. But I also liked how Marcy used two colors and offset the stencil for the white, that works really well with this stencil. Would love to win it so I can try that.

Marcy’s style is closest to mine. I’m having fun trying out more artistic and mixed media techniques, but at heart, I’m more of a clean and simple girl. 🙂

I love the wood grain! Thank you for creating this. A wood grain is one of my all time go-tos for a background. As far as style closest to mine, that is tough, but honestly it would be yours, Julie.

Like another poster, I didn’t think I’d care for this stencil design (going by the name), but I love it! I’m primarily a jewelry artist, and I often use a wood grain design to pattern metal in my work, so I really do love this. I’d say the journaling style I aspire to is most like Traci Bunkers.
