It's stencil hop time, baby! I present to you four fantastically talented women:
- Michell LaPoint Rydell: Michelle runs the challenge blog "Scrapping the Music." Her colorful art journal pages and scrapbook pages are incredibly inspiring to me.
- Jenn Mason: Jenn is the editor of Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine. She is also the author of six books including Pockets, Pull-Outs, and Hiding Places and The Cardmaker's Workbook. Be sure to also check out her DVD Mixed Media Collage: Working in Layers.
- Valerie Mangan: My favorite guest post that has ever appeared on this blog is Valerie's post "Cookie Crafts for the Holidays." She is a talented paper crafter and baker and serves on the design teams for SRM Stickers, Elle's Studio, and Pebbles.
- Christine Urias: Christine is the creator of Scrap Time — a video show (available on iTunes) full of techniques and product reviews. Recent videos have featured stencils, paint, PanPastels, embossing folders, and Ice Resin — lots of cool artsy supplies.
These ladies are going to be showing off the Wedding Ring stencil:
Why is it called Wedding Ring? It's based on a traditional quilting design called "Wedding Ring."
But I wanted to find a way to make it my own, so I "Julie-d" it up with some cool tribal-esque patterns.
My first impulse with a stencil is to reach for the paint or the spray ink. But don't forget that you can use all of your favorite pens with your stencils too! I used a Sakura Pigma Micron to trace the stencil…
…and then colored part of it in with a Sakura Glaze Pen.
Doesn't the tracing just look so darn cool?!
You can also use a single circle of the Wedding Ring pattern, as in this layout:

I would really love to learn about using inks. I just bought 3 pots and a selection of 3 nibs and am wondering how to creatively use them – mix them with mediums, with stencils (won’t they run underneath?, with paints, on fabric? I would like to learn more about pan pastels, airbrushing, and gelatin printing. I want to try the pan pastels without buying a whole set, the airbrushing looks really neat for stenciling, and I think the kids might enjoy the gelatin printing, but I just need to know more before I try any of these.

I’d love to learn more about different ways to use my sprays–Adirondack wash, Dylusions ink, and various shimmery ones. I love them, but I need to learn how to make them not blob, or blob if that’s what effect I want. Been trying to get the hang of them for years, and can’t quite seem to “get it.”

Isn’t that pathetic! Everyone makes these great sewed scrapbook pages, but I don’t know how to use a supply I already have. 🙁

I love these stencil hops and the inspiration they provide! I’m fairly new to art, so I am learning many of the basics. One of the things I’d love to learn more about is using fluid acrylics. Right now, I am mostly using craft acrylics, but want to build up to higher quality, and more flexible, products.
