If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here. Please read this post first. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks!
I get a lot of e-mails and questions about getting started with art journaling. So I thought I'd answer some of the most frequently asked questions.
Q: How do I get started?
A: Just do it.
I'm sorry to steal from Nike, but it's as true a statement about art journaling as it is about running or doing anything athletic. Nike tells you to strap on your shoes and just do it. I'm telling you to grab your journal and just do it.
Don't wait until you're ready. Don't wait until you have all the supplies or all the knowledge. Don't wait. Get started by doing it. Splash some paint around, doodle with a pen, write down your feelings — just do it.
There is no secret to getting started. You want to be an art journaler, start art journaling.
Q: But, how do I get started?
A: Okay, so clearly you didn't like the "just do it" answer. Here are five other ways to get started:
- Take a class. There are a ton of online classes as well as in-person ones. Many are free.
- Buy a book. Again, tons and tons of resources here.
- Do a Google search. Millions of images and a lot of help being offered.
- Buy a magazine. Both Cloth Paper Scissors and Somerset offer Art Journaling magazines.
- Join a group. There are in-person groups you can join (check your local art supply stores, libraries, etc.) as well as online communities.
Q: Can you give me links? Googling is too overwhelming.
A: Sure. Here are ten links to posts that have appeared on this blog, to help you get started:
- Inspired to Begin
- Creating Space for Art Journaling Every Day
- Evolution
- A Seven Day Plan
- My Three Best Tips
- No More Blank Pages
- Page in Progress
- What are Your Must Have Supplies?
- Art Journaling Week: Welcome!
- Tutorial: Start with a Strong Image
I also recommend that you work your way through all of the posts from Art Journaling Week. It's pretty much a free class in getting started with art journaling.
And here are five art journaling blogs I like to read:
Hopefully you'll find something to inspire you in their pages.
Q: I made a page and I didn't like it. And now I'm frustrated.
A: Is there a question in there?
I'm teasing.
I know we all feel that we should be "good" at a new skill right away. But it takes time. Read this post about letting go of expectations.
I have been art journaling every day for two-and-a-half years and intermittently for a few years before that. I'm still not as good at it as I'd like to be. I'm definitely not as good as lots of people out there. Anything worth having is worth working for. Take classes, practice, read blogs, try new things, most of all: keep going! Very few of us are lucky enough to be Mozart, who sat down at a piano and just started to play.
Q: I don't think I'm doing it right.
A: Hmmmm…that's an interesting word: right. There is no "right" way. Even if it's the way that has worked for hundreds of other people, it can still be wrong for you. Find the way that works for you. Read this post by Karen Grunberg.
And realize that the way you art journal will evolve as you evolve. It will change as you learn new skills, as the amount of time you have grows and shrinks, as new supplies come on the market, etc.
One of the reasons I believe so strongly in art journaling every day is that I think the daily habit really helps you figure out what's right for you.
Q: What supplies do I need to get started?
A: That's the best thing about art journaling! You don't need anything specific. You don't even need a journal! You can start on loose paper and move on from there.
Q: Okay, but what supplies do you recommend?
A: Don't spend a lot of money until you figure out what you like. My most-used supplies tend to change. Right now these are the supplies I'm using most:
- a journal
- masking tape
- gesso
- paintbrushes
- letter and number stamps
- permanent black ink
- pens
- paint
- adhesive
Use what you have and once you find your style, then go out and buy some fun new toys! And remember, sometimes having too many supplies can be overwhelming. Keep it really limited until you're comfortable with art journaling.

I hope that these questions and answers were helpful to you! If you have more questions, leave them in the comments section (so everyone can see the question and the answer) and I'll do my best to answer!
Before I go, I have a favor to ask of you. Collectively as a group we know so much and have so much experience. I would really appreciate it if you would take a moment to leave a comment sharing your best art journaling tip. I think it would mean so much to all the people out there who are struggling to get started, struggling to find their artistic voice, struggling to find the time to art journal every day. All tips are welcome — big and small, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned veteran. Whether you're currently struggling or not. And of course, I will be very grateful to you as well!
Here is the linky list for this week:
Thanks for stopping by!

My best journaling tip is: there are no rules, but if you really need one – drop expectations! If you can’t paint realistic, then try something abstract, if you are not a mixed media expert, try some watercolors…try everything and you will soon find what fits you best. 🙂
Have a nice weekend lovelies! xxx

a great primer! thanks for all the info.
I think it might help many to start with a cheap journal or composition book – so it’s not so precious to just play in. enjoy the process, don’t think about the results or having to post online!

Usually I don’t plan out my page-I just throw down some ink or paint and see what happens. But…….I find that inspiration can strike anywhere, anytime. So I carry index cards with me to jot down a quote or an idea or a color combination or even a quick sketch. Index cards come in lots of colors and are inexpensive. Sometimes I glue the index card in my journal! I read this hint somewhere: Remember….this is your art journal-you don’t have to show anybody. Thank you Julie for a great post! You are fab!

My best tip would be similar to “just do it”, and it’s – get off the computer!! I just LOVE to read about techniques, admire other people’s work, buy stuff online, and I just find myself sitting hours on end on the computer, instead of throwing paint in my journal. So that’s always the best tip – Just get off the computer. You don’t need a journal, a notebook, a moleskine. Just grab any paper, and start working. I also really like the idea of just starting without knowing what to do, or thinking of the outcome. I almost always start with either painting something, or gluing something down.

My best tip so far is to explore and imitate as many styles as you can find. There are as many styles of artmaking as there are artists, and each imitation teaches me something new. I find new things I like and some I don’t. I find new techniques for old supplies, I read reviews of products before I invest, I try all the step-by-step techniques I can find. My kids know some artists by name simply because they love to watch the videos with me.
And another good tip: If you’re just playing around with paint and supplies, invite a friend to play, too. Make massive amounts of painted, collaged, stenciled, sprayed, stamped, punched, stitched, and ripped papers and don’t worry about what they look like. When they are all dry, think of the beautiful, accidental masterpieces, backgrounds, and collage fodder you’ll discover in that pile of messy fun!

The tip that keeps me going is to just do it for myself – not for anyone else. ANd don’t compare.

2 best tips I got were from the free thing that Nat Kalbach did at the beginning of the year. I can’t remember what it was called, or the person who said it, but it really struck a chord with me. She said – just sit in your chair. If you make yourself sit down in front of your book then something will happen, and it is true – it always does. Another one was Dina Wakely – her color warm ups. Just play with tags, put a couple of layers on, whether it is ink, paint or paper. Then cut shapes out of your tag.

Julie, I find inspiration in nature. Some days I just sit in my back yard and watch the squirrels, the leaves blowing in the wind, the hummingbirds or cardinals. Nature has the best color coordination system in the universe, and the most wonderful images! Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and hints… You really do inspire me as well!

Hi Tali,
read your comment and agree with you also. The free class Nat did was called JUMPSTART 2012 and it was awesome and soooo helpful. The guest that said just sit in your chair and it will happen is Karen Grunberg, she is another of my fave artists. Her blog is filled with ideas and inspiration!!
Love love the tags idea we learned and play with them all the time.

The thing that has helped me the most with my art journaling has been to look for an inspiring quote and then to make a journal page with it. Sometimes it inspires something particular and other times it just produces a background to use it on but it keeps me going.

Julie, this post was awesome and helpful again. I love when you share links to your old stuff and to other artists. I agree with all your answers above especially the JUST DO IT!! That first step is always the hardest and you just have to do it and keep going and not thinking about it. I recommend reading your posts again and following the links.
My art journaling really took off when I took your “30 Days Art Journal” class, doing this little bit every day helped show me how it can be done and different techiniques to try. Having a community to discuss things and share work with also was fun. Thanks again for that class Julie!!
My other tips would be to:
1. I know Julie said this above but really you don’t need anything fancy or expensive, I started with my kids Crayola supplies and still love to use.
2. My favorite kind of art journal book is old hardback books at the library for sale. I can get them for a quarter each and gesso over the pages and paint and draw or paper collage on them. LOVE LOVE THIS!!
3. I also use index cards and manilla folders both can be found at the dollar stores in your area. Just getting paint to paper each day for fun is all I need to be happy.
4. If you do have a art journal, skip the first page. Heck, skip to the middle even and start there. The first pages still make me freeze!!
5. Get off the computer, this is a hard one. You can spend hours blog hopping and drooling over other people’s art when really you should be creating some of your own art.
6. I know Julie said this also but being new at this still I can’t stress enough that there is no wrong/right way. JUST DO IT YOUR WAY AND FOR YOUR HAPPINESS!! This will be a challenge you will have to committ to over and over again but it’s true.
7. Have fun and just play!!
Thanks again Julie for your wonderful blog and always inspiring me. So thankful that I found your blog last fall, you are AWESOME!!

Julie, this post was awesome and helpful again. I love when you share links to your old stuff and to other artists. I agree with all your answers above especially the JUST DO IT!! That first step is always the hardest and you just have to do it and keep going and not thinking about it. I recommend reading your posts again and following the links.

My first art journal was 5-6 sheets of newspaper glued together, gessoed… cheap, easy and no pressure. I made some pages that were so beautiful! If I say so myself, lol.

My best tip is that if you are struggling with perfection, make a “bad” page on purpose — just make it messy and full of all the things you dislike. I find that messing up on purpose helps me get past any fears of messing up!

Ok – Julie said any little thing. I think I may have said this before but one of the little tips that has really helped me is cutting the side of the wrapper for stencils, stickers and rubons. I could never get those supplies back in the wrapper because of the adhesive on the bottom flap. Now I can just slide my products out from the side and slip them right back in. This has removed another “arrrrrr” moment for me.

I have only made stabs at the art journaling process. My style (no matter how hard I try to make it something different) repeatedly reveals itself as child-like; raw and bold. I usually want to make something sophisticated or elegant and then I realize I am controlling my self-expression. Over time I have learned to allow myself to be free and not control what I need to express and I will let go into the process. Right now I am trying to learn about colour and as a child I will just splash a page with whatever colour is on hand and see what I will do next. It is hard not to be critical of myself that I don’t know enough or don’t know the right technique but all those thoughts just keep me stifled and controlled and I don’t create any art at all. When I am in my happiest moments I am down on the floor (in my tiny little space) making a mess making friends very slowly with my paint.

I collect quotes or sayings that I personally can relate too…I also allow my personal daily life experiences lead me in some of my art journal pages…an extra long wait in the doctor’s office, a beautiful sunset, a special passage from a book, bad news from a friend, etc…if it registers with me then it is fair game. I must have at least 4 ongoing journals going on at one time…I also love going back and looking through them and sometimes laughing at myself and my reactions, or reliving a happy time, or even a sad time. I really do believe art journals are good for one’s mental health.

The most helpful tip that I can offer is to make a mini-kit to bring with you. I put some supplies in a box and bring that and my journal with me when I go out for a chai latte or day at the park. I paint pages in advance and then doddle and journal when I’m out.

I consider myself a beginner, and I also use quotes. That’s probably my favorite way to start a page. I have such a boring life, that writing a lot in my art journal just doesn’t work. But what I CAN do is write ONE sentence every day. It can be anything…got my car fixed, ate an awesome meal, the weather… Just ONE sentence every day!

I’m a beginner. What gets me working on a page is to remember that the page is for me. It doesn’t have to be viewed by anyone else.
I did buy an art journal book, alas it didn’t work for me. I didn’t know that I already had my own style (the book and I were not a match). The book actually kept me from working in my journal, it made me feel as if there were rules to follow. After a couple of weeks of not working in the journal, I started again without the book. I just started throwing colors on the page, then writing and stickers, photos and it went on and on. Then I found when I wasn’t creating in my journal I was itching to get back to it. As the journal progressed I found I developed a style that was all my own, at that point journaling became very rewarding. My best advice would be to put what you want in your journal without any rules.

I have a tendancy to only see the “forest” of what I want to create and forget that there need to be trees and that they start from seeds or seedlings, etc. Getting myself to think “inch by inch” is my challenge…so 10 minutes (+/-) a day coupled with “pages in stages” are two principles/tips I am working on implementing.
This has to be one of the best pieces of inspiration and encouragement I have ever encountered, in a book, in person at a workshop or on a blog. This piece is an absolute gold-mine and I truly value every word and the thought and care you put into it. Par excellent!

Great post, Julie! I’m new to art journaling and I used to struggle – sometimes for hours! – each time I was faced with blank white pages. However, I decided to take the advice of the more advanced art journalers (some of whom you previously referenced) who advise to just consider your journal as more of a “practice” place where you can experiment with new paints, sprays, gel mediums, markers, stamps, etc. It’s really taken the pressure off of having to create something “perfect” or meaningful. So, this new perception of an art journal has completely eased the pressure so now when I get new “goodies” to play with, I can’t wait to open my journal to those empty white pages and get all of my new products splashed down and stamped around! You will also eventually find yourself turning to older pages created when first starting out and adding more stuff to it as you gain more confidence. Ah… That’s the key!: CONFIDENCE. It’s all about building CONFIDENCE.

My favorite tip is to flip thru old magazines or pictoral books and cut out a couple of images and/or phrases I like. It gets my creative brain going. What color/colors would look good for a background? What doodling or rubber stamping would look cool with these images? I have a very collage-y style as I don’t draw as well as I’d like to.

I don’t have a tip, yet, because this is something I want to do. I’m going to take the advice of just sitting down with paper and something to put on it, and do it. Thanks!

This is a great question. I have been struggling with art journaling. I watch lots of great videos and read books and blogs. But when it comes right down to it, a blank sheet of paper makes my mind seem to go blank. I can’t think of anything to do, it’s like I’m frozen. What has worked really well for me is taking an old magazine and painting/journaling in that. Suddenly no more blank mind. It’s weird but I’m going with it.

What has worked really well for me is taking an old magazine and painting/journaling in that. Suddenly no more blank mind. It’s weird but I’m going with it.

I am relatively new to art journaling, but I love it! No, more than that – it is helping me get through a tough time in my life and is much cheaper than therapy! Suggestions: I use a Strathmore Visual Journal book because the pages are heavy enough to take paint, glue, etc. I usually start with a feeling, thought, or quotation. I use gesso first, then paint, but sometimes I die cut an image or a word. I keep a box of little scraps of paper, tickets, stamps. Then I just add stuff til I like it or it feels finished. The thing I love is that I can start with the feeling of fear or sadness and come out of it in a much more positive place. Recently I have started putting stamps on every page, because I feel like I am receiving messages from my soul as I do the pages. Most important – have fun and relax (you can always add a layer if you don’t like it) PLAY!!!

My best work includes rubber stamping (combo of handmade stamps and ready-made ones). Sometimes the stamp is just a dot, or letter/numeral or a strand of block checks to accentuate yet other times I make or find a large stamp that demands to be the focal image. Also visually I like creating random patterns with small stamps, allowing the ink to be 100% of color and fade during stamping without re-inking for each impression.

The best tip I have for anyone is not to give up on an ugly page. Just take any part you like and keep it but get rid of everything else with paint, gesso, collage, anything you want. Keep doing this over and over until you like it. The ugly layers end up adding such depth and texture that supports the parts you love.

One main thing I try to remind myself is ‘do not compare your work with others’. Do it for you and feel happy about it. I think all the rest of the things that I usually follow are already given here.
Taking a class is also helpful. I started my Art Journal with Julie’s class. As it lasted for 30 days i guess even after the 30 days it became a part of my routine.

Great tips, Julie! My suggestion/tip is to use your art journal as a collection piece for inspiration as well as journaling. Sorta like a hands-on Pinterest, or a bulletin board in a book. Not every spread of my journal looks like a wonderfully layered, painted, meaningful, deep expression. (Maybe that is not the end goal for all, but that is what drew me into art journaling, and perhaps what stifles me, too.) Anyway, some pages show color schemes I like. Some have clothes cut out from fashion mags I like. Some have quotes I’d like to remember. Some have shopping lists. And finally, some pages are colorful and layered and gorgeously experimental. Oh, and I find revisiting art techniques from elementary school to be fun and freeing when I’m stumped.

Hello! Thank you for this post. I live in Finland and Art journal is not so familiar here. (Hope you understand my English, I’m not so good in it)
I found Art journal by accident some day and I’m trying to learn(?) it.
I like drawing, painting, stamping and so on, but I don’t usually know, what to wright. Does it have to be writing in the pages?

I have a few different journals…one is just Zetti-style art (which I love), another journal is used for journal page trades with other art-journalers, and I keep a personal journal. What has helped me the most for getting past the “blank page freeze” is to paint all of the blank pages first and then add collage and journaling later. I also recommend you have or purchase Gesso! lol

At one time, I had a sign in my craft/dining area that said simply, “START.” Somehow it is gone, but the habit isn’t. I also love Julie’s idea about there being no mistakes, just showing the hand of the artist. So, sit down, grab something to mark on and with, and “START!”

What I find really useful to avoid the blank page syndrome is… not to have any blank page! I used to make random background on my pages in advance, but nowadays I simply make my journal with recycled material; pages from old children books, discarded dividers and other office supplies, colored paper, reclaimed ledgers, anything goes! No more blank pages! Plus, it’s eco-friendly.
My favorite “art” supply: washi tape in may colors. So simple to make a clloage with it, and it’s great if only have a few minutes and don’t wan’t the hassle to wash off paint and glue.

There’s absolutely no rule! I personally don’t write a lot in my journal; some even have no writing at all. I find that the colors and images I choose are enough to express how I feel. Good luck with your journaling! It’s really worth it, you’ll see.

I have stressed over art journaling for a few years. I started a fabulous online class a couple weeks ago, I grabbed a coffee table book with big pages that was actually a bathroom window box book collecting dust, gessoed some pages and started. I am still very much “getting started” but honestly I think your tip number one is key — JUST DO IT! Really. I could have saved myself much angst and brain power if I were to have just started with a book and not worried so much about how, what, why, what-if-I-do-it-wrong… No right. No wrong. Just do it and have fun.

So today you don’t paint. Just grab crayons and draw circles and color them in. Or go for a walk with your camera and look for shots. Take the photos just for the sake of the exploration. Come back, print a couple and paste those puppies in.
OR..DO NOTHING. Just be. Don’t make it a chore, allow your creative voice to be.
LOVE YOUR BLOG Julie!!! You are on my list. 🙂 Thanks for being such a great resource and inspiration for so many.

Often, you’ll want a particular image in your journal, but the idea of DRAWING it is SO intimidating. So Don’t…. Just trace it onto really thin transparent tracing paper, that’s easy, right? Then adhere it onto your page, and at that point, it’s super easy to paint it, color it, embellish it. “But isn’t tracing cheating?” Uh, sez who? Remember, there are no Art Police!

Then adhere it onto your page, and at that point, it’s super easy to paint it, color it, embellish it. “But isn’t tracing cheating?” Uh, sez who? Remember, there are no Art Police!
I’m with the “No rules” rule 🙂 and Just do it.
There a huge amount of information about art journaling out there, and I think for a beginner it could be “scary”. Where to start?
Start here on Julie’s blog. Read, watch the video, get inspired by Julies and friend’s work… And then turn off the computer and start painting, glueing, drawing, whatever…with what you have on hand. Art Journaling is always a surprise. You never know how your page will come out.

Thanks, Julie, for all these tips and links!
I’m very much a beginner, and totally new to “art.” I started out using Crayola products: watercolors (I’m still using these,) crayons, colored pencils, etc. I figured that if I didn’t like them, I hadn’t wasted any money because my son plays with the same things. And of course, with Crayola, the total for a little of everything was less than $10.
Well, and craft paint too–I’ve been what I consider a “crafter” for years now, so I had plenty of craft paint acrylics to use.
I’ve written in my journal my entire life–my mom encouraged this and I’ve never stopped. She gave me my first journal at age 5! So I started by adding a few pictures to my journal entries. And then one day last year I leaped and created a full “Art Page.” It was a total failure but I LOVED it!! I was hooked, and I’ve been consistently learning and experimenting ever since!

One thing that really helped me get over my wanting to be perfect, right out of the gate, was to realize that any page, if I really really hate it, I can just paint it over with white or black gesso and start over. No big deal. I have only done that a few times but knowing that I can start over whenever I feel the need to, really freed me up to just do it. I took a class from Juliana Coles where she had us do an exercise where we write what artists do and don’t do and then paint over it. So let go of your feelings of not being worthy. We all have to START somewhere. And that is really the clue to just doing it, just start. Copy someone else’s style until you find your own. Just do it any way you want!
Aloha, Kate

I think the best thing I did when I started art journaling again (after about a two-year hiatus) was buying a smaller journal. When I decided to get started again, I bought an 8.5 x 11 journal, the same kind I had used previously. But I’m busier now than I was then, and it felt like it took forever to finish a page a little bit at a time in this size. My new 7 x 10 journal feels much less intimidating – even the most multi-layered pages only take a few days to finish if I make the time.

I have 2 tips that help me get going in 2 very different ways…1: is there something in the news that made you happy or angry? Collage in the article from the newspaper or grab images from the web, then journal about your feelings about this event. 2: I have several boxes of images I have cut out of magazines plus CD cases full of words and phrases I’ve also cut out. Going through these almost always sparks something. I’m working on a page now that started with a photo of Marilyn Monroe in a bathing suit with a caption that reads “Proof that you can get millions of men to fall in love with you even if your thighs touch!” This is a page about body image (duh)…I also found a large image of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn in my stash that fills a lot of the page and will be journaled over.

Colour! When I’m stuck and not sure where to begin, I just start laying down colours that speak to me that day. 9 times out of 10, these are my most favorite and expressive spreads and they begun so intuitive with a dash of colour.

If you are going to use watercolor paints or other wet media, I highly recommend getting a Strathmore Visual Journal– the bristol pages are good. Wrinkly pages frustrated me at first, but these Strathmore books hold up to a lot!

Great tips, Julie. I am a firm believer in the “just do it” advice; sometimes we spend too much time agonizing over not being able to do it in a particular way. However, there is no particular way, is there? Kipling wrote a line once that I keep in mind to use for many different things (one of them being art): “There are nine and sixty ways/Of composing tribal lays,/ And every single one of them is right!” One nice thing about art journaling is that you can always alter what you have done; you can add stuff, paint over things, glue stuff in, tape something down–whatever–and just enjoy the process. Emphasis on ENJOY.

One of the hardest things is to come up with what you are going to put on your paper each day – my tip is to identify how you are feeling that day – happy about something – or mad – or tired – and try to put that feeling onto the paper – not only will it give you a topic to journal about – many times it will help you to release that feeling by putting it on the paper and out of your mind

Thanks, Julie! This was just the inspiration I needed to get back to my art journal. I’m going to check out all those links, too! My tips are, “magazines are your friends”. So much collage fodder here–great for adding interest or making borders out of colors cut from pages. Great for finding text or specific words to add to your pages. I also love pasting a figure or face in my journal and making it my own with markers or paint, etc. And remember this–if you really don’t like something on your page–just gesso over it! Gesso, the art journaler’s magic eraser!

A few years back I made a yearbook: it was an art journal with one page per week. I painted large loose pages beforehand in a variety of colours and choose one at a time which suited my subject for that week best. It takes the pressure of your shoulders if you don’t have to make a page each day, I think.

I was a scrapbooker for a few years and then I watched YouTube and saw someone making an art journal page, and I was hooked! I couldn’t get enough! I searched and watched for weeks, people making pages and pages and using different tools and supplies. I had a lot of supplies from my scrapbooking, all I had to do was get some paints and watercolor crayons. And that’s how I started. I think the word
“journaling” throws people off, that you have to make pretty colors on a page and then write some things on it. You don’t have to write a thing. Start with what you love. I love birds, dogs, flowers, butterflies and my family. I make a pretty background with colors, stamps, stickers and then a few photos or magazine pictures of my favorite things. That’s it! Page done! There is not right or wrong way, just your way! Enjoy!!

What has worked for me in the past is to join a group that provides weekly prompts, and/or shares regularly. I loved Em Falconbridge’s 52Q in 2009, http://www.embers.typepad.com/, did my own 52 lists in 2010, and always looked forward to sharing on Fridays with Julie’s AJED. All of these had Flickr groups set up for sharing — a great source of inspiration!
I also save bits and scraps of everything and challenge myself to use them on my pages. Tea bag tags, fortunes, stickers from produce, clothing tags; they all have made an appearance in my art journals.

I have no tips to offer since I am still hitting a road block in actually getting started 😀 You must have been reading my mind at least: for you answered each of my questions 😉 Thank you so much for writing this post on getting started.

Thank you Julie for sharing this amazing information!
I think i´m ready to start art journaling, I was afraid (don´t know why) to try.
You have no idea how much you teach and inspired me!

I think everybody feels stuck sometimes, but when that happens, remember that you ARE creative, so pull out 5 of your favorite supplies…and play with them! Watch what happens when the art supplies speak to you. I end up with a journal page that evolved from somewhere deep down. It surprises me and not only reminds me that I was born creative, but that my inner self can still create, even when the tired self thinks I am empty. Enjoy!

My greatest tip = YOU are YOU! You’re not Julie Balzer, Karen Grunber, Christy Tomlison, you are YOU! Do what makes YOU happy. Do what looks right to YOU! And if you still hate it, just PAINT OVER IT! =)

If you have a child in your life, art journal with a child. They have no inhibitions, and are not afraid to try so many different things…kids just create for fun, and we can take a really good lesson from them. I art journal alongside my 8 year old daughter every chance we can.

My favorite art journaling tip is to keep at least one journal out on your work/art space so that you can always wipe off extra ink, paint etc. and restamp or stencil onto a blank page. It may sit that way for quite awhile but eventually it all comes together. This is the first time I’ve linked to my new and first! YAY! blog and my hope is to bring more bloggers to such fabulous places as this-thanks for the huge inspiration and wealth of information and sharing Julie!

this was funny Julie!
i give myself ‘permission’ to make an ugly page and just get on with it, this really frees me up to just do whatever i feel like without over thinking it and then i normally end up loving the end result.

Such an awesome post Julie, so helpful, and fab comments from your readers too. My best advice to myself and others for art journaling -as well as collage, art, writing or anything creative: Just START. Start and let it flow, you can edit it later with more paint, paper, or changing your words around. The important part is to commit to it and make yourself jump in and start!!! : )

i totally agree with you here. I’m more of a Picasso than anything and I love abstract art more than anything cause like you said there are no rules to it. Just put down paint, ink, crayons and do what feels good

I, too, had a hard time getting started to journal. I sometimes just basically make background pages with different mediums, to be continued on another day. These pages sometimes sit in my journal for days and sometimes weeks until some inspirational saying comes along or if I just need to jot down some feelings and emotions. I will thumb through my “catalog” of backgrounds I’ve previously made until I find the one that catches my mood and finish the page that way. So its sometimes just a background kind of day and then on another day its a writing day. It’s sometimes good to have a background already made up to write on for a later day or time.

a nice way to create a page would be to dip your brush in paint and then splatter it across the page:your way .
another way would be to put paint on the top of the page and let it drip onto your page.
it gives a cool effect when done on a black background.

First of all, THANK YOU! I am excited about this new artistic journey and you are full of inspiration and ideas. I am brand new at this. I noticed on your supplies that you like to have deli paper. What do you use this for? I have a bunch and would love to put it to good use. Thanks so much!

I use it for a lot of things — its a very versatile and cheap surface and collages beautifully. I have an online class on Getting Started with Deli Paper.

Nope, I usually don’t write text or very little..sometimes the images just speak for themselves, and so if I don’t have anything to say I try not to force it for the sake of just writing something..i leave it alone..when the words come, they come. If they don’t, then that’s good too…

I have been “going” to start art journaling for a couple of months now; collecting supplies in the meantime. I intent to actually “go” in a few weeks once school is out. At any rate, I have a question. I notice that most people seem to use gesso in books with watercolor paper. Then they use watercolor supplies, like paints. I’m confused as to why you would use gesso. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having watercolor paper?

My best tip is to start with a quote or phrase you like. Brainstorm what images, shapes, colours or other words might best go with it. Find the closest stamps, paper, embellies or colour mediums that will give your quote or phrase some life. Add some colour or collage to the page, add the words either stamped or with your writing then add the other things you collected. For me the hardest part is thinking of a topic to journal and letting go of my precise, too perfect inclinations so I can just have fun! I didn’t read everyone’s tips yet so I hope this wasn’t a rehash or someone else’s idea.

Gesso is often used over highly coloured papers or mediums to soften the colour or disguise what’s underneath. Some people like to journal stuff that is very personal to them to ‘get it all out’ then cover the journaling to make it private. Also, clear gesso can make a non porous surface porous without changing the colour underneath.

I think it was Oscar Wilde that said “All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril.”
