Today I want to talk to you about my sweet, talented, energetic, and generous friend Ronda Palazzari.
Here are just a few of the beautiful projects from her blog:
Ronda and her family live outside of Denver, Colorado.
And as you might be able to guess from the photo above, Ronda has just written a book called "Art of Layers."
Here is F&W media’s description of the book:
“Basic scrapbooking has you place photos and embellishments on cardstock or patterned paper – easy and…well, basic. The next step for most scrapbookers is layering. But trying to get that rich, interesting layered look can be very intimidating. Where do you even start? "Art of Layers" teaches scrapbookers and beginning mixed media artists just how easy it is to get to that layered look in any papercrafting project. Author Ronda Palazzari teaches readers 50+ techniques that will serve as tools to pull out whenever a layered look is desired. The chapters allow the reader to build their skills, from paper techniques they won't be afraid to try adding fabric, embellishments, and stamping to finally giving spray inks, paints and gesso a try.”
And this is the image that Ronda asked me to share with you today. It's from the stamping section of "Art of Layers" and it's full of texture and color (two of my favorite things)!
I'm super excited about Ronda's book! And I hope that you are too. If you would like to win an autographed copy of Ronda's book, simpy leave an answer to the following question in the comments section of this blog post:
What is your favorite art or craft book and why?
You must answer the question to be entered to win. (If you get my posts via e-mail, you can leave a comment by clicking on the title of the blog post and you'll be taken to my website where you can leave a comment in the white box at the bottom of the page.) I will close the comments on Sunday at 8pm EST.
If you'd like even more chances to win, each of these blogs is giving away an autographed copy of "Art of Layers":

My favorite craft book is the “SDU-Scrapbook Design University” books I got when I took the series of classes. These were the first classes I took to learn different types of techniques. It is still fun to look back on those beginning projects to see how differently I do things now that I have found my own “style”.

My favorite are Art Journaling by Somerset Studio. Come to think of it, Ronda introduced it (them) to me! I love it because I always learn something and I really enjoy seeing sooooo many different artists in one book.

My favorite? You are kidding right? Well, for today, let’s go with Surface Treatment Workshops by Sandra Duran Wilson – so cool to use. Maybe a bit much for art journals, but for canvas – LOVE IT. But a really close competitor at the moment is Creative Collage Techniques by Nita Leland. I don’t know if there is anything that Nita can’t do.
The list grows daily. 🙂

My current favorite art/craft book is Creative Awakenings by Sheri Gaynor. It’s about using mix media in journal form to describe what you want out of life, and by creating it via art, you help it come to frutation.

Hi Julie, after rediscovering my arty side very recently I’m ashamed to say I don’t have a book yet. I get my inspiration from the UK mag Craft Stamper, which has introduced me to people like Kate Crane, Dyan Reaveley and Dina Wakely. I’m on a massive journey of discovery, with a hold world of books I need to buy. This would make a great start. Your blog is one I’ll keep coming back to again and again. Thanks for being a part of this list, a new source of inspiration found. Michelle x

When I lived in Colorado, I was lucky enough to be in a critique group with several of the True Color ladies. It will forever be one of my favorite books because of the wonderful creativity and from coming to know the women who created the works. Always touches my heart and brings back great memories.

I love Ronda and her style is so fun and inspiring. Since joining the art journey a short time ago, I haven’t bought any books. My inspiration comes from reading your blog and many other artists I’ve found thru your blog. I have looked at the art journaling and Sommerset magazines at the book store and love them. Would looooooveeee to win this book, thanks so much for the chance.

I have to say True Colors, edited by Lynne Perrella. It introduced me to so many talented artists, and led to a collaborative journal project with some of my online art friends….which in turn led to meeting in person and enduring friendships. That book changed the course of my art and has enriched me in so many ways.

Very tough question, but I’ll go with Artist Trading Card Workshop by Bernie Berlin. I like it because it has lots of techniques and I’ve worked my way through it.

I have Tim Holtz’s book A Compendium of Curiosities, but really my favorite crafty thing to read is yours and Dina Wakely’s blog. I think I am going to be a regular on Rondas blog – I love the layering and wish I could learn more.

i don’t own any art books. i take anything that looks interesting out of library and read it cover to cover and always learn something new even when i think i’ve done something new it’s always in a book somewhere. a chance at a book of my own is cool, thank you. ruth

Hmmm for scrapbooking I guess its not a book but the magazine Canadian Scrapbooker, and for knitting, I just received a beautiful book called My Grandmother’s Knitting by Larissa Brown which talks about how designers in the field were inspired by their Grandmothers (and even a Grandfather or two) and each shares an pattern inspired by their family member.
Here is an inspiring quote from Meg Swansen about her mother Elizabeth Zimmermann – “In my mother’s knitting books is embedded a philosophy that tends to spill over into the rest of one’s life: You are in charge of your own knitting; there is no such thing as “wrong”. If you are pleased with the result, you are doing it “right””

Thanks for the opportunity to win, my fav book is Kelly Rae Roberts’ “Taking Flight”, which inspired me to realizing my dream of becoming an artist/crafter myself. Brave and inspirational, which is what we all need to begin a new journey.

I’ve been a fan of Ronda – and her gorgeous work – ever since the days of SIStv. I’d love to have her book! I guess my fave book right now is my most recently acquired one – Journal Spilling. I love books/mags/blogs because I’m so inspired by what I SEE. So, thanks for this (very inspiring) post, Julie, and for the chance to win.

I love Pam Carriker’s book “Art at the Speed of Life” and I refer to it often. The book itself is beautiful: the photography, the writing, etc. But i love all of her collaborator’s tips and techniques and the step-by-step instructions for completing projects from beginning to end. I’m looking forward to reading “Art of Layers”. Thanks, Julie.

Well, Pam Carriker’s “Art at the Speed of Life” captivated me last summer and I still think about the artists work incorporated into that book as awakening, tender with do-able techniques. All this talk about layering in art journaling certainly has changed my attitude toward using software to produce art electronically…and that’s great!

Well, ideas come from everywhere – especially I appreciate the great blog/sharing, and wonderful things I learn every time I see a new page here, and in the ones I read, and then each book is useful depending on what youre making really,
but
I’ve just been blown away by Gwen Diehns Decorated Journal.
She encourages the artist in me, helps me to come back to the simplest, most classic concepts yet does it at a level that is endlessly, wonderfully inspiring and rewarding.
I just love her writing, the humor and the sheer delight… in putting things down on the page, making books! and sharing ideas from all sorts of places. I just am in love with my art more when I read this book. And Ive shared it with everyone I know who was interested!
Beautifully put together, many and diverse examples, and artists, and journaling styles are covered, and mostly, I guess, because she steers away from “Products” and encourages you to do it for more than the look of the page, really – to work from the heart, using classic principles; and imparts a real love and sense of journaling over time. Using paint, pencil, bit of collage, photos but not too processed. Love her stuff!
thanks Julie great topic!

One of my favorite books is by Diana Trout called Journal Spilling…because it provides so many different techniques and has pictures with “how to’s”. Whenever I get stuck in my art journal, I have “Journal Spilling” as inspiration.
I’d love to win a copy of Ronda’s book as I seem to have difficulty “layering” my mixed media projects:) Thanks Jules

my favourite art technique book right now is creative foundations by vickiboutin cause i’m new at mixed media and it’s really easy to follow, simple and beautiful. since rhonda is my favourite artist, her book for sure will be my #1. for a really good chapter book, i love “unlocking the heart of the artist” and “divine inspiration” without those two books i wouldn’t of even tried art!

I have so many favorite books/magazines, it is hard to decide! I am completely obsessed with all the northridge media scrapbook trends, simply handmade & cards magazines. I am a lover of Somerset too. If I had to pick just one, I am still a huge fan of freestyle, by autumn leaves. Thanks for the chance to win!

Photo freedom or any book by Stacy Julian. I love her approach to scrapbooking……letting go of the notion of being “behind”.

Usually my favorite book is the one I have most recently purchased! Right now that is “collage Couture” by Julie Nutting. It has so many cute ideas in it and the backgrounds are wonderful!

Is it really bad that I don’t actually have any art/craft books yet? Well, I guess I have a bunch of crochet books, but nothing along these lines, which is why I guess I would LOVE to win a copy. Thanks for the chance!

Hi Julie. My favorite book right now is ”Flavor for mixed media” by Mary Beth Shaw. It was recommended by Michelle Ward and i love it. It is full of easy to follow instructions and is not intimidating because you don’t need to know how to draw to use it. And the photos of projects are fabulous. I am also an absolute fan of ”Art Journaling” magazine by Somerset Studio. Thanks for this chance to win. Love Rhonda!
BTW i’m a little jealous about that class you are taking at the MOMA. Lucky you living in NYC.

I have lots of ART books but I don’t really have a favorite. I guess I love books that inspire me to pull my art supplies and try my hand at whatever they are trying to teach me. Monthly magazines like Somerset and Cloth Paper Scissors are excellent because there is alawys something new to learn in those.

The (out of print) book that made me realize that journalling was so much more than random daily events was Hannah Hitchman’s “A Life in Hand: Creating the Illuminated Journal”. This book changed my journaling life forever. It showed me that I could share my unique view of the world through words, pen and ink, drawings, painting…whatever medium I choose to work in. Ms. Hitchman writes in her book, “A Trail through Leaves-A Path to Place”…”I had discovered that the journal was my most powerful ally in crafting the kind of life I wanted.” Me too!!!

To be honest, I don’t think I ever own one! Aren’t I pathetic? I wish I own one now, at least one of yours. Instead I just read blogs that’s filled with any kind of art since I rely so much on technology instead. I will definitely get a copy of Ms. Ronda’s new book and that would be a big celebration for me: to have my first artbook by one of my most fave artists. (would North Publishing books count? I subscribed to their new books this year…)

I have a lot of craft books and one of my all-time favorites is Traci Bautista’s Collage Unleashed. It’s a few years old, but chock-full of tips and techniques from sewing to journal-making, doodling, and mark-making (just to name a few) — and that’s why I like it so much.

Difficult to choose. I love Tim Holtz compendium of curiosities but I think one I will never part with is quite old now. Designing with words. I still love it. I think the art of layers is going to be in that never to be parted with category.

Oh to pick only one…..I sit in Barnes and Noble with a pile of books trying to absorb as many ideas as possible because I can’t buy all of them! There is one book I have had for years and I thumb through it again and again, always looking at it as if it was the first time. The Complete Book of Papercrafts(Kung) I love paper and the many forms it can take! And I love your blog! Have been anxiously awaiting each post since I found it! Thanks!

I like a lot of different art books. I just read through all the coments so far to see if there were any new ones I should get. I found a couple. I am currently working through Art at the Speed of LIfe by Pam Carriker. I would say it is my favorite at the moment. Thanks for the chance to win ROnda’s new book!

My favorite is “Altered Books Workshop: 18 Creative Techniques for Self-Expression” by Bev Brazelton. I try to use it as a primer for practicing the techniques but mostly I just marvel.

I’ve recently decided to buy workshops/books/magazines (=knowledge) instead of supplies (I can do that because I’ve horded tons already! ;-)), and my current favorite book is “Creative Wildfire” – I love it!

I do lots of crafts so I have many favorite books but for scrapbooking I love Ali Edwards Using Pattern Papers book and all my sketchbooks. I need some “direction” for layering, so this book could become my favorite.

I have always loved Lisa Pace’s Delight in the Details as a wonderful spot for inspiration. But Claudine Hellmuths 1st book Collage Discovery was the starting point for me. Now that I just starting Journaling I am hooked on learning all I can about this great extension of my Muse. Loving stencils and Inks right now…thanks so much for that Julie!!!

This look like a very cool book.
I think my favorite art book at the moment is «Unfurling» by Misty Mawn. But books are one of my weak link, I love them too much and never have enough of them.
I am waiting a lot for Flora Bowley’s book in May.

Hi Julie, This may sound odd, but my favorite art book is a book called Matisse, the artist speaks. I picked it up at a used bookstore and I just love looking at the pictures and vibrant colors. It also includes quotes from Matisse like “A painter doesn’t see everything that he has put in his paintings. It is other people who find these treasures in it, one by one…”

I have a couple of art type books and I really have enjoyed Journal Spilling by Diana Trout, to help me not worry about getting it “right” but to just try things. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

One that I keep going back to time and again is Dawn DeVries Sokol’s 1001 Artist Journal Pages. It is filled with so many different styles, concepts, and inspiration–all eye candy and mind candy. However, what it is not is a book of techniques. Thank you for the chance to win Ronda’s book, an autographed copy at that!

The last book I indulged in was Taking Fligh by Kelly Rae Roberts. I love the layering technique to create such a quilted pattern background effect. However, I also get antsy anticipating all the crafting goodness and diversity of project in Cloth Paper Scissors magazine.
p.s. This book looks so fun as I have been missing out on my scrapbooking world.

I don’t have any crafting books other than magazines. I was searching for one recently at the bookstore but didn’t find one to my liking. Ronda’s new book looks to be exactly the thing i’ve been looking for! Can’t wait to see it in full!

I have a LOT of craft/art books. They run the gamut from all of Kimber McGray’s scrapping and card making books to Tim Holtz’s books/videos, to collage and altered books and everything in between. If I had to pick just one…it would have to be Nancy Curry’s Texture Effects…not maybe Tim’s…oh I can’t chose.
I can’t wait to get my hands on Rhonda’s book…it will fit right in with my beginning an art journal.

Love her blog and she’s the reason that I just started subscribing to CD plus love your stencils. Thanks from a fellow Julie.

So many favs, but one I bought recently and love is FLAVOR FOR MIXED MEDIA by Mary Beth Shaw. As she says, “It’s a feast for the senses”, combining the joys of food and art.

My favorite at the moment is Crafty Chica Collection, by Kathy Cano-Murillo. I have craft ADD and there’s a lot of variety for my short attention span! I still have the “fear of the blank page” but I’d like to conquer it!

Since I’m way down on the list of comments, my odds of getting a free book are slim; but I like the idea of seeing what everyone is reading. Currently, my favorite craft books are ARTFUL PAPER DOLLS and ALTERED ART, both by Terry Taylor, and SEW WILD by Alisa Burke.

Being a newbie to art journaling I just purchased L. K. Ludwig’s book “Creative Wildfire”. I’m on chapter 1 and I love her advice on getting started and the basics on journal making. Thumbing through the book I see so many colorful ideas I’m anxious to get to. Plus, the book comes with a small journal ready for me to begin my journey! Thanks for the opportunity to win Rhonda’s book!!

My favourite art book thus far is Art Saves by Jenny Doh. It really speaks to me in terms of how other artists have faced challenges and how they pay it forward.

I’d say “A photos first approach to designing layouts” by Donna Downey, as its one of the few ideas books I really USE. Others I flick through & drool over, but this one I actually turn to regularly for ideas. Thank you for the opportunity to win this fab book.

I only own one art book that my son-in-law gave me for Christmas last year – Surface Treatment Workshop – so I guess its my favorite. I do have several scrapbooking books though but no one favorite. I would love, love, love to win Art of Layers as I’m so new to mixed media and art journaling.

I don’t really have a favourite book but I would definitely like to make “The Art of Layers” my favourite. I usually try to rely on what is going on in my mind but I would like to learn different layering techniques as I love to add a lot of detail to my pages.

For sure my favorite book would be Teach Yourself Visually – Collage & Altered Arts by Roni Johnson. It’s the first mixed media book I ever bought and I love it. I’ve had this book for a few years now and I still refer back to it.

My 2 favorite books are Ali Edwards “Life Artist” and Claudine Helmuths: “Collage Discovery Workshop.”
Both of these are very reassuring and helpful books.
I love the layered look, and I hope that I will gain confidence and learn from Rhonda’s book as well.
Thanks for the opportunity!

I really can’t pick just one favorite but I would have to say that I go back to my books (I have 3) by Ali Edwards over and over. The things I have learned from her I have applied to scrapbooking and art alike. But to be fair I have lots of books I love and use for inspiration and guidance.

I love “Clean & Simple Scrapbooking” by Cathy Zielske because it gave me the freedom to be simple when the layout didn’t need lots of extras.
Having said that, I also love layers and depth on any of my papercrafts. I think Ronda’s book is intriguing.

What is your favorite art or craft book and why? Well, since I am currently planning a project in this realm, I’d have to say “Family History Scrapbooking” by Becky Higgins. But I see a new favorite on the horizon with this “Art of Layers” book! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

You just made me realized I don’t have a favorite art book… ;( I used to buy a lot of watercolor books but now that I scrapbook, I mainly buy magazines here and there. This book may become my favorite since I’ll grab it for sure!

My current fave is a toss up between Melody Ross’ “What to Write,” and Donna Downey’s “Decorative Journals.” I like Melody’s book because not only does she share ideas about journaling, but the photos of the layouts in the book are inspirational as well.
Donna’s book helps one think beyond the average scrapbook page into all kinds of “homes” for our stories.
Great idea, btw, having everyone share favorite books.

This appears to be another awesome addition to craft books in my craft room. What a great idea not only for a book but also an awesome question for comments. I enjoy reading craft books and learning new techniques, etc. My favorite book is delight in the details by Lisa Pace. It is very well written with excellent instructions which are very clear and precise plus the photos are excellent. It was one of those books I just couldn’t put down once I started reading it. I just recently purchased Lisa’s newest book delight in the seasons which is also an excellent book. Best of luck on the sales of your newly released book…can’t wait to see it!

Well my favorite book that ha inspired my last few scrapbook pages is actually a novel- A Sweethaven Summer by Courtney Walsh- reading it invigorated my scraping again. You never know what will inspire you but I would love to see if this book would inspire me as well.

I keep a lot of books around. I grab different ones depending on the type of inspiration I’m looking for, but the one I constantly reference is the Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color. It has a lot of inspiring color combinations (kind of like Kuler).

I love reading all things art and craft related. Ali Edwards’ books are all wonderful (have them all!), as are Tim Holtz, and those featuring Karen Russell. Love the Full Circle…and anything/everything on photography. And now, maybe Ronda’s fabulous book on layers!!

I guess I would have to say Bernie Berlin’s book “Artist Trading Card Workshop: Create, Collect, Swap” is the book I refer to the most so I would consider it my favorite. Full of techniques that I referenced early in the start of my art adventure. Thanks for the opportunity to win what I am sure will be another great technique book.

Ronda’s book is already in my Amazon cart in case I don’t win. It looks like a lot of fun! I love idea books, but there are only a few so far that I go back to over and over again… still love AE’s Life Artist, still love We Dare You, and I just re-read (for the umpteenth time) Michele Skinner’s Your Words, Your Story. Those would be my top 3. Thanks for the chance to win!

I’d have to say that Diana Trout’s “Journal Spilling” is a favorite right now. She offers so many wonderful techniques and a “just do it” attitude. I appreciate her work because it’s so perfectly imperfect and it encourages me to try new things and not be so concerned with the outcome. Thank you for the chance to win this book – what a treat this would be!

I think that mine is ‘Life Artist’ by Ali Edwards. She is the first one that really challenged me to experiment with paint in my scrapbooks.
