I am trying to find my personal painting style. And it's a process.
That's too kind.
It's a struggle.
But the other day I finished this painting…
…and it felt kind of right. It's in the space I want to be in. Not quite there, but getting closer. Let's take a peek at the evolution, shall we?
I started with a canvas that I painted this summer (read about it here).
I started to paint in a figure.
Call me crazy, but I love the painting right at this point (above). There's something about the eyes and the sketchy nature of the brush strokes. I sort of wish I had stopped right here. Because one step forward (below)…
…and it's all sorts of hideous.
But I kept going…
…trying to make it look like the magazine image (below).
But in the end, she looks like a person with her head on weirdly. She doesn't look at all like she's looking over her shoulder.
Total fail.
I let the painting sit for a few days. Time always help offer perspective.
And then I decided to abandon the magazine picture and try to use my imagination to pull the painting into something non-hideous. She got a haircut and her head put on correctly. Plus, a new background with a fun border.
Better. But she's pretty boring.
Okay, I like the background and her outfit is more fun, but she just feels so vanilla and boring. I don't want to just do "pretty girl on a flowery background" — I want to tell a story and make a statement with my art! I started by erasing her pouty lips…
…and then one thing led to another and it became this:
Now this is a painting that makes me happy. The painting feels integrated. It tells a story. It makes a statement. I want to continue in this direction and see where it takes me!
Have you discovered your painting style? How did you do it?
Thanks for stopping by!

Wow! It was fascinating watching the evolution of the piece. I LOVE how it came out. What a contrast from its original form.

i love the journey you went on – thank you for sharing, love the finished painting much more character than the airbrushed magazine pic!

Your painting is beautiful indeed but I agree with you – the one were you say you should have stopped right there really is stunning!

Fascinating! I love the drawing, and love to read about the process. I liked her in many of the stages that you didn’t, too! 🙂 I think it’s commendable that you can work so much on a single canvas, because often it can get really frustrating, and there’s a tendency to just throw it all away and start afresh – do you ever feel that? I always feel like I’m actually “holding my breath”, really kind of scared of what will happen in the next stage 🙂

Amazing how a painting develops and the twists and turns it takes. Really like how it turned out- so many rich details yet the eye goes right to her. I too am searching for my painting style. I keep trying others’ styles and then absorbing the bits that feel right abandoning the parts that don’t fit me, kind of like a Dr. Frankenstein approach to building techniques that is leading me to my style.

WOW these are gorgeous!! Would never have believed that the first painting became the second if I hadn’t seen the process. I love that you kept going and trying new ways to make it work for you. Thank you so much for showing us this process, I love it when you do that. Thanks for always keeping it real here!!
I love the way it turned out, simply breathtaking!

I love the process. It reminds me of hearing about when they xray famous artists’ works and they find a number of paintings underneath….Now we see why. They were searching for their style.

I haven’t found my painting style yet, but I come close sometimes! Like you, I am still struggling.

It’s so amazing to see your painting and thought process. I go through this all the time. What is my style? What is my style? What am I doing. So glad to see that out loud like this. Each one of these is a little gem in and of itself. I love the finished product. It is spectacular. So hard to know when and where to stop, but I think you did an amazing job. I salute your bravery to keep going. There are so many times I stop working on something for fear of screwing it up.

Julie, your sharing of techniques, thoughts and individual steps in your art…are wonderful…I am sure you don’t realize how much your “sharing” inspires those of us out here reading your blog. You are the first online place I visit Monday-Friday. I realize and really appreciate the time it takes to break down your steps and take photos to share with us.Thanks!

Thank you so much for sharing your process. It is scary to keep working on a painting when you already like it.
I paint whatever I feel like when the muse calls. So, I have no style. I just paint what I like. Sometimes, I even like what I paint. But, like you, if I don’t, I just keep at it until something emerges. This is much easier to do with acrylic or oil than watercolor 🙂
By the way, when she was at the “pretty girl with flowers” stage, I thought, “Wow! Sandra Bullock!”

Love the painting and really, really appreciate you sharing your process. Got me thinking about my pattern of giving up when I get frustrated. I create blocks in so many areas of my life. I love your art, your products are some of my favorite supplies, but I think your process may be the most inspiring and impactful of all. Thank you for sharing.

just so interesting, even when it isnt something you’d make, it always tells you something wonderful about the way we create, watching what you do. She changes and loosens and becomes something altogether different from where you began… Good to see you revamp and make it work for you, she comes alive! We can be so scared of wrecking the thing, we dont realise we can rework a piece and make it sing like that. Good reminder to keep at it!

I loved seeing the progression and hearing your thoughts on this. Everytime I see you white something over with gesso and re-make it, it gets a little deeper into my head that Gesso is My Friend. Thanks for sharing!

I love watching the process. Thanks so much for uploading all those pics and taking the time to show us.I do agree the picture ‘got away from you’. Up near the top of the post where you liked it best i did too. And the first time you erased her lips i actually liked them……maybe the chin was a little exaggerated but the lips were nice. It was a challenging photo you were working from but i think you did a great job! Hugs! deb

I was taught NOT to try and find my style. With enough work, your style will find you and it will be what your true style is and not just what you think it is!

I enjoy watching your process so much better than just seeing the final result. It gives us such an insight to your thought process. I look forward every morning to reading your blog. I have a canvas on my table that just isn’t speaking to me, and encouraged by you, I am going to totally rework it. The girl is wonderful.

There is not much to discover in my painting style as I pretty much use stencils and make backgrounds with paint at this point. I admire the stick-to-it-ness that you have shown with this painting Julie.

Indigenous Woman. That’s my title and I am sticking to it. Thank you. Julie you are so real, and so willing to share and help us all learn through your own struggles. So many will only show the pretty end result wrapped in a bow. It was so much better to see all of your steps. How you changed, transformed and started over. It makes it much easy when I am painting to know that I am not the only one painting that darn butterfly over and over and over again trying to get the right perspective (not that this has been a nightmare that I have been living in my own painting class!) Thanks for truly teaching as you blog!

Well I know you don’t need another comment here…and I have nothing too unique from others to say…but I do think that the process of changing…of being bold enough to completely remake has a significance in our thoughts about personal change also. What power we possess! THANKS

This was a great post to read. I like how you show the different phases of the painting. (Having the head on correctly is a bonus! You’re so funny.) I like the end painting and it’s quirky colors for the skin and hair. Looks much more like…You!

This is inspiring. It’s so nice of you to share your process – the good, bad and ugly – so that we can all be reminded that there IS a process and that it’s okay to ‘erase’ the part you don’t like and keep working til you find the space you DO like. The final painting does look like your style and is SO intriguing!

thanks so much for showing us the journey of this painting, Julie. WOW… I love seeing your path and love where you ended up. I don’t think I have a painting style yet as I have not painted that many pictures and never a portrait. I do use paint a lot, kind of in a wild and free way with other things -I guess that is as close to a style as I have now. Great post!

Julie, can you take a guess as to how many hours you have in this painting? So many times I look at something and know (unrealistically) I am thinking that the artist just went to work and created the finished piece in a few hours…ha!

i guess i have a style but i’m still searching as well, I enjoy seeing your process…. i am mostly stuck painting falling ladies but lately i am drawn to mandalas and zentangles as they’re so relaxing to do. i still go back to my watercolor ladies all the time and i have no idea how i ended up with those as a style, they just come out when i sit down to draw or paint.

I haven’t found my painting style at all, though you can see in each of my paintings that they are “my style”. I seem to lack strong contrast. I’m a blender. (this is what most of the people in my painting class have said) Sometimes my colors become dull because of the amount of blending I do. I like how much you worked on this and how many layers are in it. I would have never went and changed her around. I would have been stubborn and left her awkwardly looking over her shoulder. I love that you did that. It inspires me to be more “free” with painting. I think thats what I get from your painting overall is a free feeling in her.

I think everyone feels that way. I always try to run towards whatever is scaring me.

Amazing….I love how you walk us through your process! It helps me feel I’m not the only one who struggles and re-works stuff! I haven’t painted in forever and ever, but I so enjoy watching what you’re doing. You prove it’s OK to make mistakes…and then forge ahead anyway.

You are so generous Julie! I love the glimpses into your creative process. You’ve done it many times and I never tire of it. I’m always in awe of how the beginning becomes the end result! Love love love it!!
Oh, and I don’t think I have painted enough to have developed a style. Something to aspire to, I guess!

wow julie! i always enjoy seeing the process of other’s paintings. i often wish i’d take photos of mine, because i forget what they look like, after i paint or change something. i don’t know if i have a painting style. i’m sure i do, but i don’t know how to define it.
