Art Journal Every Day: Playing with PanPastels

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150

If you’re new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here.  Please read this post first.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it’s just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you’ve done some art journaling this week and you’ve blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

This week I’ve been in a creative rut.  Not going to lie.  I’ve hated almost everything that I’ve touched.  But I think the trick when you get stuck is to keep going.  You have to just push through that icky-nothing-is-working phase.  One of my no-fail methods of getting rid of bad ju-ju is to turn to my art journal and set myself a specific task.  I particularly like to experiment with something unfamiliar when I’m in a creative rut.

Why?

Well, I find that working with something unfamiliar forces me to let go of my usual tricks.  It helps me let go of expectations.  It makes me pay attention.  It’s good for me.

This week I decided to sit down and play with PanPastels in my art journal.  I’ve used them before.  I like them a lot.  But I’m not 100% comfortable with them.  Mostly I use them to shade or add a bit of color.  I wanted to make them “the main event.”  So I sat down to play, with no expectations.

I know that I’ve mentioned this before, but I think of my art journals as more of a place to experiment than a place for finished artwork.  Sharing them can therefore be difficult as I often feel that they’re kind of a mess.  Nonetheless, here are my experiments…..

(P.S.: Besides the PanPastels, I allowed myself to also use a china marker.)

I started with a face:

Face-atfirst

And then I decided that she was clinging too much to reality.  I wanted to push her and add some color and panache.

Face-sm

The whole time I was working on her I was itching to have a brush in my hand.  So I decided for my next page to play with adding water and Matte Medium to the Pan Pastels to see what would happen.

Wetexperiment-sm

Interesting results.  I think I may have ruined some of the PanPastel cakes by sticking a wet brush directly on them.

Finally, I decided to take an old unfinished journal page that was kicking around…

Coverup-BEFORE

…and see what would happen if I added PanPastels on top.

Coverup-side

I think the results are fantastic!  I love the transparency of PanPastels.  It’s amazing how easily they changed the mood of this page.

I have to admit that I was still feeling quite un-creative until I wrote this post.  But looking back at these pages, I find myself thinking, “Hmmm…they’re not as bad as I thought.”  And that is making me feel ready to tackle some projects on my “to do” list.  The creative energy is rushing back in.  I’m not sure if it was the unfamiliar product, the letting go of expectations, the writing of this blog post, a bit of time and distance — maybe it’s all these things.  But I’m so happy to be feeling ready to create!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I’m still on the fence with Pan Pastels. The powdery mess doesn’t produce as much joy as a wet painty mess. Perhaps I just need to play more.

  • great stuff jen! and i really love all the “permissions” you gave me in your post. i have really been working on expanding myself on the mixed media front but sometimes i get discouraged. the pressure to “finish” something rather than just experiment and be ok with it. the “debate” i keep running into about whether an art journal HAS to contain words to or it doesn’t count. and sometime (alot of times) i am not doing a piece that comes from some deep emotional state i am struggling with. i just REALLY love colors and i really LOVE getting messy!

  • This is great! Maybe you could sand the top layer of the pastels you wet. I am always messing things up like that. I bet it is fine.

  • Hi Julie, first of all, I love your work! I haven’t played with pan pastels, but they seem to be the craze now and I just watched a Prima class last night where Sharon was using a new set from Colorfin, much like the ones in your pics.
Secondly, I did it!!! I finally did my first Art Journal entry. I took a pic and created a Flickr acct, but don’t understand where you want us to link it! I’m looking for the Linky link at the end of the post but don’t see it.

  • I love the effects you got! I’ve been hankering to get some Pan Pastels but used the excuse I didn’t want to go downtown Houston to get them. I think you’ve pushed my motivation up a notch and I may have to trek on down to Texas Art supply this weekend!

  • I’m interested in pastel, I love the softness and shadowy effects that can come up, though I worry about offsetting the particles to my opposite page when the book is closed. I’d be looking for a way to set the color on the page…

  • Love how it all turned out! I used pan pastels on a face I did in my journal but it ended up a big mess, nowhere near your fantastic portrait. I think I may need to give it another shot and practice a bit (or alot)! Thanks for always sharing your work, I enjoy visiting your blog daily for inspiration 🙂

  • HEre is my question about the Pan Pastels…I have bought some and used them only a few times because of the residue…color will rub off…Did you use hairspray or some kind of fixative to “SET” the colors. I liked using them for a super quick background when I wanted a sky/grass but don’t like how they rub off. I appreciate your input. Thanks!!

  • So cool! I love the translucency, too. I think one of my first exposures to PanPastel was when you used them in your Stencil 101 class. Such a cool technique, and the ability to erase them seems to offer a unique way to play with color and voids. My hold back is in choosing just a couple colors to start with, not splurging on a whole palette. I want them ALL! 🙂

  • Pan Pastels have become my “go to” art supply. I love that they have such a transparent feeland they are so much easier to use than their original counterparts (especially for blending.) I often lay down dress pattern tissue on my canvas or page, to give me a starting point, but then I immediately hit it with the Pans!

Thanks for your inspiration and I hope you didn’t ruin the pan with the water. Maybe just a little scraping will help?

  • “This week I’ve been in a creative rut… I’ve hated almost everything that I’ve touched… You have to just push through that icky-nothing-is-working phase.”
UGH. This could totally have been my own comment this week. Everything a struggle – and when you’re in it, pushing through can feel a little hard and pointless. So, thanks for the reminder. These pages are both beautiful. x
PS: I’ve never invested in Pan Pastels (tempting as they are) because I own some other great pastels (http://www.dickblick.com/products/caran-dache-artist-soft-pastels/) Can you offer any insight on how they compare?

  • Ive never tried the ones you linked to, so I dont have any insights.  The only thing to know is that Pan Pastels are applied with tools rather than direct to paper.
