If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here.  Please read this post first.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

I've got some lovely guests lined up to share their art journaling process through a fast forward video.  Our first guest is Nathalie Kalbach.

Q: How long have you been art journaling?

A: Forever and for only a short time. HUH? Yes, I know, weird answer.

Forever because until a couple years ago I used to write diaries but I didn't only write in them. I also used Ephemera, drawings, letters, snippets of the day, everything really. Some pages only make sense to me and in retrospective I would say that those pages were my early art journals. When I started with Scrapbooking and Mixed Media I stopped my diaries.

For half a year because I just started doing this intention and actually it is all Julie's fault. She said I should do it- and actually she is right, I missed pouring my feelings out.

Q: Why do you art journal?

I actually call my art journals: Art Mournals – I usually only art mournal when I feel not good or when I'm angry -in a not so good mood. I am a very happy and optimistic person. Once in a while though there is something that upsets me or is unusually long on my mind. I need an outlet for expressing me that is uncensored and raw. I censor my lot in some of my work because it is used on websites or is work for someone else. In my art mournals I do not care what people think. And often after I worked on my page…I 'm actually good again – all bad feelings or thoughts are in the page and I can move on and be the happy me again.

Another reason is that for me the process of creating something is often even more important than the outcome. I enjoy creating the art mournal pages as I can also get lost in the process of making them.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do in your art journal?

I love heavy texture and techniques and therefore I love to try out new things or technique/color combinations in my art journals. I can try things on a small scale before i apply it somewhere else. Since the art journal represents the raw me, I enjoy working in a raw and very tactile way on those pages. Those techniques later on might find their way into other projects or my workshops.

Supplies:

I have linked to all of the supplies that I could find.  Here are the additional supplies Nathalie used: old hotel key card, Tattered Angels Screens, Magazine Image, Sassafrass Lass Paper, Typewriter, Heidi Swapp Chipboard Letters

And here is Nathalie's beautiful page:

We're trying a new brand of linky list this week, so it may be a bit different than you're used to.  Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • TONS of TEXTURE for sure! I especially love how the video came out…with the blocks of the page in progress and then flowing to the next “slide” for the details. You sure do dry a lot…I seem to leave that step out and get inpatient. LOL

  • Your videos are always so fun, Nat! Truly reflect the happy person you feel is your true self. Love all the texture and intense color in your art mournal page. Great techniques for me to try. And as far as your subject matter, bleh, it is such a downer when ladies get so catty and invite drama. Art mournal seems a perfect place to let off some steam and turn the page on their negativity. Have a great weekend!

  • I want to know more about that Derwent shaker!!! Very fun looking … do you just splat with the brush after mixing the block and water? Or is there an opening on the bottom to ‘shake’ some Derwent powder out on the page?
