I've got a confession to make.

But first, some exposition: Project Life is a memory keeping system developed by Becky Higgins.  Using divided page protectors you are encouraged to capture the mundane bits and pieces of life day-by-day.

Throughout 2011 I admired Ali Edwards' Project Life blog posts.  I had never been interested in the project before, but she made it seem super awesome and totally doable.  But as I already art journal every day, I figured it would be a duplication for me to pick up the project.

Recently I stumbled across Marcy Penner's beautiful Project Life pages.  She made me realize that Project Life could be an artistic pursuit as well as a memory keeping one.  But still I resisted the very thought of it.  How many daily projects can a girl have?!

And then sometime in December I caved.

I succumbed to the rabid memory keeper in me.  I succumbed to the girl-who-likes-a-challenge: how do I make Project Life my own?  I succumbed to the peer pressure (in the best possible sense of the phrase).

And now that I have accepted that I am on the Project Life bandwagon, I have been forced to think about how I want to approach this year-long project.  While you can buy lots of cute little cards and an official Project Life binder, I've decided to focus on making my own Project Life supplies as I go.  I only bought the divided page protectors.  They come in lots of styles and a I bought a selection to play with (though I'm thinking "F" might become my fave).

As a start to Project Life, I carved this set of stamps to use on my daily journaling cards:

Daysoftheweekstamps
At the moment I'm desperately sad that they're in New York City and I'm in Boston, but soon enough we'll be reunited and I can begin Project Life in earnest.  In the meantime I've been making little journaling cards like crazy:

Journalingcards
If you're interested in finding out more about Project Life, here are some great posts from around the web:

  • Michelle Wooderson shows how she organizes her Project Life supplies and work space.
  • Ali Edwards shows off her title page and talks about her approach to Project Life.
  • Marcy Penner shares some of her beautiful pages and shares a bit of the process.
  • Lisa Truesdell has written a wonderful post that covers just about every last detail about how she does Project Life.
  • Becky Higgins has a post about how to get started with Project Life, and it includes a video.
  • Deb Duty offers a collection of random tips.

I'm looking forward to seeing where this project takes me!  How about you?  Are you on the Project Life bandwagon?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I can’t believe you caved! 🙂 But at least you’re doing it your way, and that means lots of interesting posts for us… I have to say that I enjoyed this project on AE’s blog at first, but as time went by it seemed more of a “day job”, something really way too big to take on (if you’re not paid for it, that is ;-)). It’s too much for me, too obsessive, I think, and I can be the queen of obsessive, but if I try to document that much (again, unless it’s your job, which is the case in many of those blogs), when will I actually live?? :-))

  • OMG this is so exciting! I just started Project Life this past week and what you are saying sounds just like how I feel about it too. I am doing it as a means of creative expression as well as memory keeping. I am seeing all the little pockets as a whole new medium. I just put my first week up on my blog. I can’t wait to see what you do with yours!
P.S. Making my own days of the week stamps is a big part of why I signed up for your stamp carving class! Yeayyy!

  • I’m not doing Project Life but I found a lot of inspiration here and after following your links. I started a project similar like this but all digital. I want to capture my daily life on a weekly basis by making a digital layout each week. After 52 weeks I hope to have a complete album, ready to be printed via an online printservice. BTW, love the carved stamps!

I’m very excited that you’ve decided to do PL, Julie. Your work is so inspiring. YAY!

  • Julie, this is awesome and I’m so happy for you. This is going to be my 4th year of PL and it excites me as much now as it did that first year. For the 2011 year I took a totally different approach and made it a weekly spread so no more worries if a day (or two) go by without photos. It was the best thing for me, loved loved it this way. I also included baseball PP and photo PP as extras during the special weeks/holidays/bdays and that made it even more fun. The other thing was filling it with more paper stuff of all kinds, one week I even did a paper week only with Ali and it’s one of my favorites.
I can’t wait to see what yours will look like and am excited to see it and be inspired. I have to say after taking your 30dayartjournalclass, it can be different, for me PL is catching those small moments that are to small to scrap or do a whole page about, just little moments that get forgotten and my bigger stuff goes into my art journal and my scrapping. Hope that helps you give you an idea between the 2 kinds of memory keeping.
Love the stamps and your own journal cards, plan on taking your stamp class when I have extra funds.
    Thanks for the inspiration.

  • I have done PL since its inception (2009) and I have been really glad I did…that being said, I kinda missed the chance to do more playing (artistically) with it…kwim? So, I started doing more art journaling (along with the PL). This year, I am going to try to combine both. I am already addicted to your blog so I will enjoy seeing what you do with yours. I am pretty sure I am going to love PL more this way. Thanks in advance for the inspo Julie.

  • Love that you’re on board, and doing it your way Julie! Those stamps are great — can’t wait to carve my own.
This is my third year with PL, and while I had always intended to personalize it more, I ended up using the journaling cards provided, added bits of our daily ephemera here and there, and am happy that I have something to look back on. My kids love looking at it too, and remembering. They also like comparing weeks from different years.
The first year I did it, 2010, was the year I battled BC, and I still managed to do a weekly spread, along with my 52 lists. It was just right for that time.
I’d like to think that I’ll do more with PL this year, but however it ends up, I know I’ll be happy with it.
And I love that I’ll have even more Julie inspiration through the year!!

  • I hopped on last year and I am so glad I did. I love looking back to any random page and seeing something awesome. Even if I don’t make time for anything else, I can always make time to snap a photo or jot down a note. I am in love with this project.

  • I’m not ready to make the PL jump, partly because I don’t know that much about it and haven’t taken the time to explore. Thank you for your links-those will help a lot! Perhaps I will be ready to make the plunge next year, or as others have, start at some point during the year. As for now, AJED has been a wonderful way for me to jot down the little memories and daily happenings and thoughts. I AM IN LOVE!! Can’t wait to see what PL-Julie-Style brings, and those stamps? Ooo-La-La!!

Ooo-La-La!!

  • Your blog is such a terrific resource. Not only do you inspire us with your own projects and designs, but you introduce so many other talented people.
I hope you are enjoying Boston. I don’t know if the Daily Catch is still there, but they used to have an incredible Fra Diavolo.
    Enjoy!

  • I did Project Life in 2010 and then I hated it by the end of the year. I did the “I have to try and take a photo every day”, which drove me crazy because I didn’t do it and then had weeks of days with no photos to go with that particular day. I found doing some “filler” photos of plants in my garden was a good way to have at least something to put in. After doing that for a year I did not do it in 2011 but realized I do very little scrapbooking otherwise so I decided to do it again for 2012. Plus it is a good way to get some of your real life down in photos and not just have a scrapbook full of celebrations, those one off photos that you would never do a layout with. I bought Becky’s journal cards as they are so cheap and the Style A pages but am using a We R Memory Keepers 3-ring binder and figure that should be good for 6 months. I really like Ali’s idea of having photos to go with a particular week and they could all be from the same day if I want it to be. Plus I am really trying to think about taking photos of every day things. Like we just signed some loan documents for our house and I had the notary take our picture half-way through an hour+ long signing session. Can’t wait to see what you do!

  • I’ve been struggling with whether or not to do Project Life and I decided like you to do it my way. I love the idea of a kit, but I have so many of the supplies already I decided to improvise. I think I may have to buy the pages but I am still trying to figure a way to create my own! I can;t wait to see your pages! I may even finally blog on regular basis now!

  • Me too! I’ve jumped on the Project life bandwagon also. I have the kit of cards and some dividers, but I admit I’ve been stymied how to start. It didn’t quite have the flavor I want. I wanted something more artsy, something like the glimpse you gave us today of what you’ve done! PLEASE continue to share!

  • ok me again, but I’ve been wanting to ask. I’ve recently started adding more spray ink and paints to my layouts and have been wondering what kind of paper you use on your scrapbooking layouts for your artsy pages?

  • Hi there! First off..LOVE your blog! This is my first year at attempting PL and I’m trying to keep it all in perspective. I know the more I think about what I WANT to do with it and how I WANT things to go the more stressed out I get so I’ve decided to TRY and take the “IT IS WHAT IT IS” approach. Now, if you’d know me, this is NOT easy for me. I’ve resigned to telling myself that just doing what I can and at least having something documented for the week itself will be OKAY. I can’t fret about forgetting a damn receipt or forgetting to save a cool saying on my coffee cup one day. If I start doing THAT … well then, I might as well just forget about attempting this year long project! I have no desire to take a photo a day because that just sounds freakin’ CRAZY – however, it’s day four and yes, I’ve taken four pics without even trying…get back to me next month cause I don’t that trend continues. LOL! Good luck to all of us on this project. By the way, your stencils ROCK and those stamps?! *LOVE*

  • So funny that your post today is in regards to Project Life. I have envied that for many years & never gave in. Although, when I scrapbook I have done it in this manner long before it was “hip”…along with the mix & match style of 12×12 & pocket pages. And even though I will continue with my more artsy art journal things I am longing to get back to the scrapbook style that I started with. Thanks for the final push I needed to jump in!!!
PS Are you coming back to Arizona this year?
