I hope that you're having a wonderful new year! I'm bursting with projects and ideas for 2012, but I am also still out of town (going on two weeks now) and while I have been making some art every day (here's a peek at a project I've been working on)…
…I am without my real camera and most of my art supplies. So I thought I'd share a layout that I made back in 2010. Before I had the chance to post it to my blog it was picked up by Scrapbook Trends Magazine! And since it was published many months ago (in fact this post about it was rescued from my draft folder and dated October 14, 2010), I figured it was okay to share.
I stitched a grid of two inch squares and that created the basic background for my layout.
Each square is filled with layers of patterned paper.
I was decadent and used an entire package of these Jenni Bowlin butterflies. I am so over hoarding supplies. I want to use them all and make beautiful things instead of dusty piles of stuff-I'm-saving-for-later.
While this layout is not where I am right now (artistically speaking), I see so many things that are still so very "me":
- Even though there's a grid, it's made a bit wonky by the hand cut papers.
- The layout uses less-than-great photos.
- There's a kind of mismatched, haphazard look to the whole thing.
- The journaling is handwritten.
If I were to create this layout now, I'd probably:
- Use more paint.
- Use fewer embellishments.
- Use more hand painted papers.
- Add some stenciling.
It makes me wonder where I might be with my scrapbooking next January. We change in tiny little increments and it can be hard to see as it's happening. So I know that I won't notice as I evolve this year. But I look forward to the looking back next time I open the vault.
Thanks for stopping by!

I love your blog! I just spent a very enjoyable hour catching up on what I missed on your blog during my busy and memorable holiday season. It was fun to read your year in review posts and see some threads of change in your art. You are such an amazing artist and a source of inspiration for me. I love your style for art journalling, something I truly will attempt in the not too distant future. I want to experience the freedom of playing with color to suit my mood even though I can barely draw a stick figure. I believe I shall have to let go of my very self critical side and just have fun. Thank you for sharing your art and techniques.

You are so right on about the changes we make as we create. I think that is one of the most fun and inspiring things we can do as an artist. It would be so boring if we never changed anything. Thanks for inspiring us everyday.

I love that you used the whole package! I too am starting to let go of the “saved for the perfect project” mind set – and am USING my stuff. Your post inspired me to go back and review some old scrapbooks (way more than a year ago) and I did find similarities – the seeds that were planted so long ago just now starting to bear fruit. Thanks for all the inspiration!

Whenever I discover a new blog, I try to go back and read all the archives. It’s interesting to see how the art style changes/morphs/improves, and I always wondered if bloggers go back to see their earlier work.

I love the butterflies – it does not need fewer embellishments though I agree it does need some paint and/or stencils to catch up to you of today. But I love it anyway – love the stitched grid!!
