Wrapping up a week of looking back, I thought I'd share my favorite blog posts from this year:

Art Journal Every Day: Creating Space for Art Journaling Every Day
The title pretty much sums it up. Some ideas on how to be prepared to art journal every day.
It's one of my favorite posts because I think making literal space for art in your life is where all creativity begins.

On Confidence and Creating
In this post I share five tips on how I get motivated to create when I feel a bit intimidated by all the pretty art out there already.
It's one of my favorite posts because I had forgotten all about this post until I reviewed my blog to write the post you're reading right now. And you know, I read this post and it spoke to me. Reminded me who I am and what I'm capable of. I hope it reminds you of that too!

Prima Designer Day
This post is one I originally did for the Prima blog. It's a basic run down of where I live and create and all that good stuff! (That photo is the view from the end of my block.)
It's one of my favorite posts because while I share art that is personal on my blog, I don't usually share my personal life. I'm not a lifestyle blogger. This was a rare opportunity to just talk about my life and show off my neighborhood!
April 29, 2011
Art Journal Every Day: No More Blank Pages
Five short technique tutorials meant to get you past the intimidation of a blank white page in your journal.
It's one of my favorite posts because I use these techniques constantly. Virtually every page in my art journal begins here.
May 18, 2011
Colorful Garbage = ATCs
In this post I share how I made ATCs from some leftover fabric scraps.
It's one of my favorite posts because I adore making something out of nothing!
June 1, 2011
Super Quick Tutorial: Book Page Tape
As the title suggests, a super quick tutorial on creating tape made from book pages!
It's one of my favorite posts because it's such a simple idea. Simple and good.

Thursdays I'm at MoMA
This post is about the mixed media art class I took at MoMA where we worked on art after sketching in the galleries.
It's one of my favorite posts because this class meant a lot to me. In some ways I think it was a huge turning point for me. I'm not sure if I'm totally able to verbalize my feelings, because I think I'm still processing, but it opened my brain to art in a way that it hasn't been opened before.

Some Thoughts on Blogging
This post is one of my all time faves in the entire history of my blog. In it, I outline my tips for successful crafty blogging.
It's one of my favorite posts because it's advice from the heart.
August 16, 2011
I Fail More Often Than I Succeed
In this post I share the millions of times I've been rejected and some advice on dealing with rejection.
It's one of my favorite posts because we're all in this together. We've all had our art rejected in some way. It's healing to be reminded that it happens to everyone and it's just part of life. It doesn't change who you are or the value of what you create.
August 25, 2011
Forty-Eight Hours
For forty-eight hours I kept track of everything I did.
It's one of my favorite posts because it's like a virtual scrapbook! And a reminder to myself to stop working so much! I re-read that post and was re-reminded that I need to set some working hours for myself. It can't be all day, every day.
September 2, 2011
Art Journal Every Day: Museum to Journal
In this post I share how art at the Art Institute of Chicago inspired me in my art journal.
It's one of my favorite posts because it's sort of a continuation of the class I took at MoMA. How do you take inspiration from interesting established art and create something with it in your own style?
October 14, 2011
Art Journal Every Day: Doodling on Dark
This post includes a video and several examples of art journal pages with black backgrounds.
It's one of my favorite posts because starting with a black page is just fun. Don't believe me? Try it!
December 6, 2011
Art Adventures Abroad: East Side Gallery
This post contains a banquet of yummy photos of Berlin's East Side Gallery.
It's one of my favorite posts because it's a feast for the eyes. Lots to think about and look at!

Some overall thoughts:
This is the first year that I blogged at least five-days-a-week for a complete year.
I'm really proud of myself for making the commitment to blogging and I want to thank you for being here and listening. Through your comments and e-mails you have changed my art, brightened my mood, encouraged me to keep innovating and experimenting, and generally been a great source of happiness every day. I hope that reading my blog has made you happy too!
Thanks for stopping by!

Wow! I remember reading most of those, but I’m looking forward to re-reading a few of them. I kind of fell off my art journaling and blogging wagon. Some life issues I guess that are hindering me. I know I will be inspired to get back to it once I read your words – I love your transparency and authenticity Julie. Thank you.

Sometimes your blog is the only piece of mail I keep in my inbox. I am constantly inspired by you and your artwork, keep up the blog, please! I am still Art Journaling Every Day since your class and I took a really yucky class since yours…no comparison. You’re a natural teacher and a natural artist, yes, I know, with a lot of hard work. I admire your work, and while mine is totally different, I try your style out now and then and am happy.

You continue to reinforce why you are my favourite blogger Julie! Not only did you blog 5 days a week this year, but they were always lengthy, meaty and informative posts. Sit down and have a cup of coffee kind of posts. Definitely worth re-reading kinds of posts! I love what you write about and how you write it. For 2012, perhaps your own book?

I have not thought of myself as an artist. I think in very linear ways. Stretching my perception of what I do with my creativity is what reading your blog does for me. For that I am grateful. See you in stampcarving 101.

yes, rest assured that your blog is a ray of sunshine always! I respect you and your work so much – you stay ‘real’ … I believe I told you this before, you always act surprised when selected for an honor. I love that! I see you as a professional artist but you don’t act the part (I do mean that as a compliment). Thanks for being YOU.

I have really enjoyed your blog. I love the success/failures. A reminder to us to keep at it no matter what. I am good at getting things done, projects that I love and projects that have sold to my small but growing group of collectors, BUT! I need to remember to POST pix and blog to gain a wider audience. You have inspired me. This IS possible. Thank you. I am inspired by your work and your blog. 😀

Thanks for your dedication to blogging this year! I always seem to learn from your blog. If nothing else, you make me think about things and I appreciate that. I hope you will keep it up this year and I am going to try to start the year strong journaling. I have been avoiding it maybe because I don’t think I am good enough to keep an art journal. Always something.Happy New Year!

Julie! I am very busy reading an 800 page book and playing on the computer. I don’t have time to be inspired like this!! =) Seriously, thanks for recapping the year. I now have an easy resource for when I need direction and a jump start! Happy New Year!

Your work and observations on life have helped me adjust and refresh my process – this is exactly what I was looking for in 2011. For the upcoming year I hope to refine that personal achievement, focus on composition and tap in to Source! So glad to have discovered you on my path Julie!

I read most of these the first time, but I want to take the time to go back and reread some of them! I think you have enough to write a book and I hope that you do! Love your blog, right now it is my favorite for what I want to learn how to do better.
Aloha, Kate

I have not missed a day reading your blog, you are such a source of inspiration and motivation to me. I took your 30 days in your journal class and I have not missed one day working in it. I have almost reached the end of the journal and have another one ready to continue the journey. It has become an important part of my day, something I look forward to. Thank you for all that you do and for staying true to who you are, you know we all love you! Happy New Year to you and yours!

Loved your year end round up of blog posts, etc. as
I started reading your work in mid-year and there were good things I missed. Since I started reading, I have read everything and learned so much…thank you for sharing your art with us all. Happy 2012! I look forward to following all of your new adventures.

Reading your blog has made me happy all year. It is like having an art friend. Your viewpoint inspires me and gives me a window into another way of looking at things. This is what I love about all artists, the sharing of ideas. Thank you.

Yep, like many of your readers, my day starts with Julie and a cup of coffee. Echoing many of the former comments, you are so real, such a great inspiration, so dedicated to giving your readership motivation, support, and a creative push, an incredibly talented artist and equally talented teacher. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! And looking forward to what 2012 brings by way of Balzer Designs and my guru, Julie! <3

Hi Julie, What I can say about what you offer to the world doesn’t matter because there are no words to describe your generous spirit and your ability to teach, share and to inspire. I first came across your blog (late 2011) after having completed a fun tutorial you did with Stampington – I think it was called fast and furious something or other. Then you stepped into my life for real at Bizzy B here in Toronto and I finally found a way of creating cards that set my mind to rest. (I found making cards too controlling and confining and your class set me free – quite literally something changed inside me with creativity on the whole.) Some of your favourites are one’s I have bookmarked too! I especially appreciate your resourcefulness in creating from what is on hand. This is my style out of interest and experimentation but also out of necessity. I don’t believe in stopping myself because I don’t have the “right” supply. Your “book tape” tutorial in particular helped me get over the wash-less stash that I currently find myself in. I didn’t have an old book so instead of stopping I decided to try it on a telephone book page. Your blog is a dedicated reminder to me of how you reach and touch so many of us who need a reason to continue to create. You have shown me how to continue on with your plethora of unique ideas and the commitment to creating no matter what! You are extreme on talent and gifted in giving. Thank you for all of it. Frances

When I count the “things” I’m grateful, you are always one. You inspire me, educate me, let me inside your world so that I feel like a friend.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You helped me see myself as an artist.
I also hope to get the money together to take your “30 Days” class in 2012!

I haven’t been watching your blog for very long and am really enjoying these review posts!!!! Just completely read your “thoughts on blogging” post and it is some very good information. When life gets a bit less crazy I’d like to make blogging regularly a thing for me… of course, I’d have to be making regularly too :-)) Sounds good to me!!!!

It was a happy day when I found your blog late this year. I visit pretty daily even if I don’t comment. The way you share your good and not so good ideas/projects is what I love about you. Taking your 30dayjournal class was dream come true and I’m so thankful for all you shared and taught us in class. Thank you for the daily blogging and inspiration. I’m looking forward to seeing and learning even more in 2012 from you!!
Happy New Year!

Take all the above comments, mix well, shake out a couple of things and the rest is me trying to respond to how you are influencing me. I think you are wonderful as an artist and a person, keep it up – so many of us need you. Thank you, Julie. Happy New Year.

I haven’t been a long time reader, so much of these “best of” are new to be, but I am totally inspired by your honesty and creativity. Thank you so much for the hard work.

THANKS Julie!! Although I don’t always comment, I really appreciate that you post this much – your blog is one of my favorites, or actually THE favorite – I love your art, and I love that you share so much of your process and thoughts! it’s so refreshing, and there aren’t many bloggers who’ll do that. Thanks so much for all your hard work!
