2011 in Review: Favorite Other Projects

2011InReview-sm
Continuing a week of looking back, I thought I'd share my favorite non-scrapbook and non-art journal projects from 2011:

January 2011:

FrontofBag-sm
FrontofBag-sm

It's one of my favorite projects because I love the face — very different from what I was doing at the time.  And I love the way I created a sort of placard on the front and back of the bag.

February 2011:

IfYouBelieveYouCan-sm
It's one of my favorite projects because
it represents (a) several artistic experiments, and (b) was one of the first just-for-me projects I made when I decided to leave the whole design team thing behind.

March 2011:

BeUnique-sm

It's one of my favorite projects because I love the background and the message.

Painting-sm
It's one of my favorite projects because it tells a story without any words.  Something I struggle with.

May 2011:

Japan
It's one of my favorite projects because it's a little outside of what I normally do (or it was at the time) and I love the way it turned out.  The image, the colors, the meaning.

June 2011:

image from balzerdesigns.typepad.com

It's one of my favorite projects because it turned out way better than I could have imagined!  I love this card so much that I can't bring myself to write a note inside and give it away!

BeKind-sm
It's one of my favorite projects because I believe in the message and just love the colors, layers, and the whole design (notice how it was inspired by the "Be Unique" canvas from March?)

July 2011:

Dress
It's one of my favorite projects because I couldn't be prouder of this dress!  I still don't have any "real" photos of it.  But it was a labor of love that took me days and days and I poured all of my creativity into it.  Some day, when I have lots more room, I hope to make a whole bunch of mixed media dresses!

September 2011:

21

It's one of my favorite projects because it reminds me to be true to myself.  This is the way that I like to paint and shade a face.  It's not my teacher's way and it's not for everyone, but I *love* it!

UTEEEarrings-sm
It's one of my favorite projects because I wear this pair of super light weight earrings all the time and get tons and tons of compliments on them.  The colors really glow in real life and they're so great for travel because you barely feel them!

October 2011:

24
It's one of my favorite projects because for a girl who always felt like she couldn't draw realistically, this drawing makes me proud.  I've got a long ways to go, but I'm headed in the right direction!

November 2011:

BannerStamps-sm
BannerStamps-sm
BannerStamps-sm

It's one of my favorite projects because this set of stamps needs to exist.  And now that they do, I can't stop putting them on everything (which is so sad because I think banners are "over" as a trend).

Jurydutycarving
Jurydutycarving

It's one of my favorite projects because I discovered a whole new concept for carving/printing stamps.  New discoveries are the best!

REd2-sm
It's one of my favorite projects because I adore the background and it represents a big mental shift for me.  Now that I know that I can draw realistically, I don't feel like I have to.

December 2011:

KindleCase-Front-sm

It's one of my favorite projects because I love how the face turned out.  She's a great mix between the imaginary girls I like to draw and a drawing made from a real human being.

Behind-slats
Behind-slats
It's one of my favorite projects because
I love turning nothing into something!  Amazing what you can do with a white pen and a steady hand.

Quiltletembroidered-sm
This one is still in progress.  It's my take it on the airplane craft.  But It's one of my favorite projects because I'm not a comfortable embroiderer and it was been wonderful to explore my own natural stitch choices and just play with texture and what feels right.

One of the things that I love about this process of wrapping up is the sense of accomplishment.  A year is such a very short and very long period of time all at once.  I don't feel like I'm improving.  In fact, I often feel like I'm treading water.  But with this colleciton of art, I can see how I've changed and improved.  I can see how small ideas bloomed and how I let go of others along the way.  I'm really proud of how much better at painting faces I am today than I was a year ago.  And I'm pleased to see that most of the projects on this page were experiments that went really well!  That's always a great encouragement to keep trying new things!

No doubt about it, I am on an ongoing artistic adventure and I can't wait to see where 2012 takes me!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Hello! Thanks for this year review. I really enjoy reading it and seeing your projects again. Thinking about it I’m amazed at how varied they are and at how many “creative roads” you’ve been following. I’m sure you haven’t said your last word yet and I am looking forward to seeing what you will do in 2012.

  • I’m a bit of a silent lurker – just wanted to say how inspiring you are and this post is just gorgeous. I love your portraits and love that you went your own way and not the teachers – it’d be a bit boring if we all rigidly did the same thing!
    Happy New Year!

  • Never mind if everyone else thinks banners are out of trend, if you love them keep on using them – I personally will never be able to get enough of bunting and banners around my home and in my cards! Thank you for posting the mini review, I only stumbled across your blog back in November but it fills me with such inspiration πŸ™‚

  • You are a lady of many talents. I have started art journaling because of you. I finally found a source that had a good collection of your stencils which arrive today, I am looking forward to your stamp carving class, and since I am an art quilter I want to create fabric like you do…you are my inspiration and I look forward to your daily posts. Thanks you Julie for sharing your talents with us.

  • I love your projects but what you said about a year being both “long and short amount of time” really encourages me. Thanks for all your heartfelt sharing and your amazing artistic endeavors. I’ll always run from sewing but I find that dress amazing! I’d want to wear it every day if I had something like that. Wonderful post!

  • The February project is wonderful!
Your drawing of people has improved tremendously over the past year and that is because you have worked on it on a regular basis. I go to your blog first thing in the a.m. when I log on and you never fail to start my day off right. THANK YOU JULIE for the gift of sharing your art and process with us (the fans).

  • JULIE!!! LOVE your work so much – I loved when you painted your beautiful flower back in February and your gorgeous Japan project in May (even though it blew off the balcony!!) Your BE KIND card is on my Pinterest and I was thrilled when your mixed-media dress won fan favorite at CHA!! Your art classes have been reaping amazing portrait work from you and who else but you would spend jury duty carving amazing stamps?! Obviously, I am a big fan and can’t wait to see the inspiration you will share in 2012!!

  • It has been a great pleasure joining you on your 2011 creative adventure and I am looking forward to see what 2012 brings. I have 2 quick questions, please: do you have any plans to teach at the INK PAD? Also, what kind of white pen did you use on the tape dispenser?
    Happy New Year, Julie.

  • I do not have any plans to teach at the Ink Pad and I used a white sharpie.

  • Julie, what a beautiful and diverse body of work! I am new to your work and so inspired by many of these projects. I can’t pick a favorite, there’s just no way but I have to say the male drawing from Sept. is really great, something really spoke to me in that picture. Maybe the truthfullness of who you really are as an artist? Looks like I’ve got hours of archive perusing to do! πŸ™‚
