The week between Christmas and New Year seems like a very good time to look back and reflect, doesn't it? So all this week I'll be looking back at my faves from 2011. Today I'm going to share my favorite art journal pages from 2011:
January 2011:
I love it because I love the white and colored chevron pattern. It's always amazing to me what a little white paint can do!
May 2011:
I love it because it was a page that didn't work and I found a way to fix it! Plus, look at all of that journaling! Love that!
June 2011:
I love it because it was a great experiment. A face-a-day for thirty days. Very accomplishable because of the small size. I'm tempted to try for a face-a-day every day for 2012, but how many "every day" projects can a girl have?
July 2011:
I love it because it is the first time I've ever sewn on a journal page! Because of the whole two-sided page thing, it's hard to put those pages in your sewing machine, you know?
August 2011:
I love it because I built this spread over a long period of time using a ton of different techniques and then one day I decided to pulli t together. Proof that slowly and gradually are really good things!
I love it because I sometimes get stuck in one kind of art journaling. It's easy to forget that there are so many other kinds out there! This journal of my vacation to Maine remains one of my faves. All these little "ugly" drawings that look so fantastic now with a bit of distance.
October 2011:
I love it because it is just layers and layers and layers of play!
I love it because for two reasons: (1) it was a great experiment to make an alphabet (2) it makes me think of my "30 Days in Your Journal" class, which was really fun for me to create.
November 2011:
I love it because I went against my "more is more" philosophy and tried something a bit bare and I really like it!
—-
Looking at this collection of pages I see a few common strands:
- Lots of layers.
- Use of white.
- Colors and lines that fade in and out.
- They're very dense.
- Red/Orange is a favorite color.
- Strong black line.
- Drawing and doodling are everywhere.
- I like circles and grids.
Looking back at a collection of pages like this and identifying the things that unite them helps me figure out where my focus should be in the future. For instance, I keep lusting after the beautiful sparse pages of some art journalers, but in my heart I'm a maximalist and I need to stuff the page full of…well…stuff. I love the collage pages that other do, but it doesn't come naturally to me. I'm more of a paint and draw it kind of girl, and that's okay.
The thing I'm most proud of when I look at this collection of pages is the fact that each one represents a risk I took that was rewarded. An encouragement to take even more risks in 2012!
Thanks for stopping by!
All your pages are just so fun for me to peruse. Thanks for sharing. Just be-bopped over here to tell you I just finished watching you on Scrapbook Soup TV on my local PBS station. You did the sectioned doodles and the dressing pattern layout background, think it was show 101. Anyway, you are a natural on the telly – told my hubby, oh yes, I’m taking stamp carving from her in a couple of weeks, hehe. BOY, now he thinks the tuition was a real bargain, since you are a tv star and all. winkwink

This is a great idea Julie, love seeing all your thoughts and past work. I’ve only been here the past few months so it was fun to see your work from almost a year ago. Thanks so much for doing this and sharing them.
I was in your 30day journal class and loved the ABC page you did also. My other favorite here is the face a day spread, how cool that you did this. Might have to try this myself in 2012. I also thought it cool you journaled around your feet, how funny is that. So many good ideas here for me to work from in my new journal, can’t wait to try.
Thanks again for all you do for us each day and are a constant inspiration to me!!

You know why I love that first spread you shared from January 2011? Because it launched me into keeping my own art journal this year!! I found your step by step description of this spread SO inspiring, and it just helped me make sense of the whole art journaling process. I also really like that alphabet you created…I am working on some lettering practice, and this looks like a fun project.

Loved peeking into your older journal pages…I hope that you realize that you are a real inspiration to lots of us out here in “Just Beginning Journaling Land”…Looking forward to learning from you in 2012. Wish we got your PBS show here in Florida…but I know there must be another Balzer DVD in the works since you shared a few Hint pictures about your Denver trip. Ann M.

You and your work are such inspiration to me, I have tried things in my art journal that I never thought I could or would ever do. The entire process is such a freeing experience to one who never wanted to even try for the fear of failure. I loved this post, it was like walking thru a art gallery to me! I can’t wait for the next class and then the one after that. With you help I’m spreading my wings! Thanks Julie, I hope you have a very happy New Year!

I like the idea of pulling out older journal pages and reflecting on why and how you did them and why you like them so much. It does bring a sense of continuity to the process. I sometimes look through my journals and it is so utterly random that it bothers me. But I can see how just focusing on some of them and the common threads they have would make me feel better. Thanks.

Love all these pages and how different they are from each other. Variety is definitely the spice of life. I tend to get stuck in a rut so it is great for me to see your pages that are all so different.

Great review and yummy pages. What a great year of art journaling posts on your blog Julie. Thanks for all you’ve shared with us! I like the word “maximalist”, I guess I am of that kind too. 🙂
Happy new year!
