Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza! Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop! Each post comes with a giveaway. Today I've got an awesome stencil hop with five wonderfully talented paper artiste types:
- Leslie Ashe: Leslie is a scrapbooking powerhouse. She is on the design teams for American Crafts, Echo Park, Prima Marketing, and Elle's Studio. You have probably seen her beautifully layered pages in Scrapbook Trends Magazine, among others.
- Emily Pitts: Emily is a clean and simple scrapper who writes articles for Write. Click. Scrapbook, Scrapbook & Cards Today, and Scrapbooks Etc. Magazine. She is currently on the design team for the Cocoa Daisy kit club.
- Lisa Pace: Lisa has penned two artsy instruction books. I own her book Delight in the Details, and Delight in the Seasons is currently available for pre-order. She has a stamp collection of vintage images with Pink Persimmon.
- Tammy Tutterow: Tammy is the queen of tutorials! She offers lots of classes on her blog, as well as through Big Picture Classes. She is on the design teams for Fiskars and Basic Grey, among others.
- Nathalie Kalbach: Nat is a mixed media scrapbooker who teaches all over the world. She is a Tattered Angels Golden Ambassador and a member of the Cocoa Daisy kit club design team. Plus she let me stay with her for eight days in Germany. 🙂
So what stencil did these ladies get to play with? Meet TCW224 "Circles in Squares":
I think the most interesting thing in the world is when a hard line meets a soft line. There are two design details that I love about this stencil:
- It's super geometric. So I love the way it easily contrasts with my own hand drawn lines when put into use.
- If you look closely you'll see that the squares don't all match up. They're not actually squares. Technically speaking, they're rectangles. And the little tiny bit that they don't match up creates a great deal of movement in the stencil!
On the packaging for the 12×12 Balzer Designs stencils you'll see this image in the lower right corner:
This was the very first layout I did with my stencil prototypes when they arrived. I took the 6×6 version of the stencil, put it on an angle, tiled it, and used Distress Ink to create this cool patterned paper…
…which ended up on this layout…
…in many different pieces.
Creating a pretty piece of patterned paper is a great way to work with stencils if you're a bit nervous about slapping them directly onto your layout.
Another piece you've seen before is this tag:
It features the "Leaf Frame" stencil as well as the 6×6 "Circles in Squares" stencil.
And now here's a brand new layout:
I have mentioned it before and I'll say it again, you are the boss of your stencils! Never feel that you have to use the entire stencil. You can see that I just used patches of it, and I love the look!
I kind of love this layout a lot. I can feel myself moving in a slightly new direction and I'm pleased with where I'm headed. By the way, did you notice that I used the Balzer Designs "Julie's Words to Live By" stamps on the photos?
I recently bought a Kindle, figuring it would be perfect for all the traveling I do. No more lugging books around. But I didn't like the case that I bought online to go with it. So I decided to make my own little pouch:
I used the "Circles in Squares" stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12 to create the case. It's so easy to use stencils to pattern fabric. (And I think it's kind of magical the way the stencil almost seems like leaves on the back side of the case.)
Something I preach and live by is the mantra that you just have to keep going. True inspiration always lies behind the frustration and failure. I really struggled with this art journal page:
There are about six layers of paint and paper and all sorts of stuff under what you see. But I'm thrilled with the results!
One of my favorite parts of the page is the patterned circles and that got me thinking. What about making a patterned circle stamp? Watch the video to see how I did it:

Hmmm, tough choice, but I’d start with Nathalie’s black gesso and texture. Love Tammy’s transfer, too, and the ‘extras from one transfer. Your ‘new look’ patches layout is very cool, too..okay, I knew I couldn’t really choose just one, but I am all about stencils right now!

I didn’t want to waste all the paint or ink on the back so flopped that onto other papers. It’s hard to stop flip flopping back and forth to see what you get!

It was fabulous to see all the ways a single stencil can be used – I love many of your pages and would likely use the stencil on my journal pages. I like how Leslie cut up the rows and used it in pieces but my absolute fave is Nathalie’s mixed media canvas because that’s where my interest is right now… I’d love to win! 🙂

Loved them all, but I think I will vote for Tammy’s. I would certainly use her techniques with the stencil, but I would do some positive stenciling, too! I wish our local stores would carry Julie’s designs–they have CW stencils, but I haven’t seen a-one of Julie’s yet! Boo, hiss!

Wow, this stencil is gorgeous, love it! I’ve not used stencil much so I think I’d start easy and try to make my own patterned paper so my answer is: I’m most likely to try your project!
