Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza!  Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop!  Each post comes with a giveaway.  Leave a comment answering the question-of-the-day and you might be the winner of that day's featured stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12!  Comments will remain open on this post for seventy-two hours.  The winner will be announced after that.  In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase any of the stencils there are many in-person and online shops to choose from (including my own little online shop).  See a complete list here.

StencilHop2011-w150 Today I've got a stencil hop with four stunningly talented ladies:

  • Jen Cushman: She is the Ice Resin Queen and her book Explore, Create, Resinate is totally wonderful!  She's also the author of "Art Choses You," an art marketing advice column for Belle Armoire Jewelry and a contributing editor for Create Mixed Media.
  • Jill Sprott: Jill is an amazing scrapbooker.  Her beautiful pages combine clean design with messy painty fun and beautiful writing.  She is a Garden Girl at Two Peas in a Bucket and on many prestigious design teams including Jenni Bowlin and October Afternoon.
  • Karen Grunberg: Karen is a creative soul who spends her days working for Google and her nights creating amazing art.  She is a prolific blogger and a long time teacher over at Big Picture Classes.  She always surprises me with her intelligent innovations with product.
  • Paula Gilarde: Originally from Ireland, but now living in Massachusetts, Paula is a Creating Keepsakes Magazine Hall of Famer and a contributor to Write. Click. Scrapbook.  Her clean and simple pages have appeared in virtually every scrapbooking magazine.

Thus far I've done a separate post for each of the stencils.  But today I'm doing just one post for all three face stencils.  I will choose THREE winners and each winner will receive 1 of the face stencils in 12×12 and 6×6.

I was inspired to create these face stencils because whenever I teach classes involving painting faces some of the students are so frustrated by basic construction that they are unable to focus on their own artistic expression. These stencils are meant to be a help to teachers and to students and to allow you to focus on the fun of creating.

I did recently have a student tell me that after using one of these face stencils for a few weeks she now felt comfortable enough to start painting her own faces from scratch!  Isn't that awesome?

So let's meet the girls, shall we?

Meet TCW231 Edith and Maude:

Faces
Let's attack this one from a straightforward point of view.

This video received an audible gasp at CHA.  I played it during my seminar on making YouTube videos and when the stencil came off revealing the black outline the room gasped.  It was a super cool moment!

Here's the page from the video:

VIDEOSample-sm
And here's a companion page using the other half of the stencil:

AJ-Change-sm
AJ-ChangeDetail-sm
It was important to me that the features of the girls be versatile enough to work for many ethnicities.

And remember, you don't have to use the whole face!

Speaking of which, I'd like to introduce you to TCW233 Ava (though I call her "Bangs"):

AvaLogo
(I'm probably not supposed to pick favorites, but she's the one I keep going back to!)

In this video I show you how to be the boss of your face stencil and just use the part of it that you want to use!

Here's the page from the video:

RedHead-sm
Here's another art journal page where I just used Ava's face but drew my own hair:

Rawscan022-sm
And a few more straightforward versions of Miss Ava:

Ava-Asian-sm
I love that it's the same stencil but she looks slightly different each time!

And last but not least, meet TCW232 Summer:

SummerLogo
Summer is a very popular girl.  People tell me that it looks like them, their daughter, their grandchild…she just has one of those faces!

In this video I share an easy "Birthday Girl" Tag how-to:

Here are the tags from the video:

BirthdayTags-all-sm

I think tags are a great alternative to a card.  And for some reason I find them a lot easier to make.

Finally, here's a quick visual breakdown of how to use the face stencils using the "Summer" Stencil in 6×6 as an example:

1-2-3Face-sm

  1. Trace the stencil with a pencil.
  2. Color the image with watercolor paints.
  3. Place the stencil back over the painted image and use acrylic paint to stencil the image.
  4. That's it!  You're done!

To have a chance at winning 1 of the 3 face stencils in 6×6 and 12×12, answer the Question of the Day:

Which of the projects from today's hop are you likely to try yourself?

Just a reminder: To be eligible to win, you must post your comment in the comment section of this blog post.  You cannot post on Facebook or by replying to the e-mail (if you subscribe) in your inbox.  The reason for this is that I pick a winner via "random number generator" so I need a single list of comments.

Thanks for stopping by!  Now go and get hopping:

  • I’m gonna try the techniques from Edith/Maude as one reminds me of me and the other one, my daughter. This should give me a great start on adding faces to my journaling! Love these stencils!

  • I fell in love with Summer as soon as I saw her, not only does she have the name of my fabulously gorgeous granddaughter Summer Joy but she is a girl of many faces and identities. One minute she can be innocent, sexy, mischievous & sweet. ♥

  • I think I’d likely try something similar to the tags Paula did on her page. I like the “contained” mess haha. My niece Ava’s 2nd bday is coming up in november. Heh, so I think of her when I see the Ava stencil.

  • I’ve taken face painting workshops where we all try to make our faces look exactly like the teacher’s faces. What’s crazy about these stencils is that, rather than turning out “cookie cutter” faces, they actually make it easier to draw a unique face each time! Face stencils! Brilliant, Julie, thank you! Very da Vinci!

  • By far your ideas using Ava, Edith, Maude & Summer are the BEST. I LOVE working with watercolors, mists & acrylics. AND I can’t sketch faces so I NEED those stencils!!! 🙂 Karen Grunberg used your stencils in a unique way. I also noticed she used your other stencils on her journaling pages. Great concept.
Thanks for ALL your ideas in your blogs. U DO rock!

  • I so very much enjoy your written and video lessons. You have so much talent. Thank you for sharing it & for inspiring me.
I want to try the water colors over the pencil sketch of the stencil followed by the application of the stencil in black.
I hope you come teach in Colorado sometime next year.

  • Good Morning Julie.
All of the ideas were amazing but my favourite was using the stencil on the tag. Great idea! I’m, right now, as we speak, in love with tags, and really enjoy creating pieces of art with them. My favourite stencil is Ava – something about her is very special.
Have a great day. Thank you for this opportunity.

  • I’ve never been a fan of figural art, but was surprised by how versatile these stencils were for other things as well, when I had a chance to try them in class. So I’d likely be using face parts: lips, noses, eyes, hair swirls – rather than complete faces. I would be inclined to try some face tags, though!

  • These are fabulous! I sometimes get frustrated when drawing faces because it takes forever for me to get the features aligned. I love these stencils! I loved your birtday tags with the reverse stenciling and would definately love to give that a try. I also like Jill’s page layout with the faces along the bottom like a border. How fun!! Could you please come out with a boy face stencil, all the boys I draw come out looking like girls :p

  • Although I loved all the projects on the blog hop (especially Karen’s journal pages); I will be using Julie’s birthday tag idea because today is my sister-in-law’s birthday! I had already made a card, but I just HAVE to put a tag on her gift! I happen to already have the 6 x 6 Summer stencil and several Adirondack sprays – so I’m ready to go!
I love your videos, Julie, to give me different ideas of how to use the stencils.

  • How fun. Love the Ava stencil and the way you used it to create different faces. I have all the 12×12 and want to get all the 6×6. Love to use in AJ pages and canvas art.

  • I AM SO STOKED BY THESE STENCILS, ALL THIS TIME I’VE BEEN TRYING TO DRAW FACES WITH NO LUCK AND TO FIND THAT THEY HAVE STENCILS, DO YOU HEAR THE ANGELS SINGING!! MY DAUGHTER IS QUITE THE ARTIST AND CAN MAKE FACES WITH NO HELP AND THEY COME NATURAL FOR HER. BLESS HER FOR THIS BUT ME I WANT I NEED I MUST HAVE THESE GORGEOUS STENCILS. ALL MY HEADACHES WILL BE GONE AND I CAN STOP GOING THRU SO MUCH PAPER TRYING AND TRYING. CAN YOU SEE ME DOING A HAPPY DANCE AND SCREAMING FOR JOY!!1
Ok sorry about that but really these are so sweet. I have to go with the Summer stencil first because that’s my daughter’s name and this reminds me of her. She is my sweet one but with a quick sassy side that leaves you spinning. I would love to use this one on a page for her. The other stencils are great too, would love them all.
Julie your art here is so AMAZING!! Every single example is just amazing and inspiring. LOve them all and would love to try the watercolor one with my daughter’s page.
I”m a HUGE HUGE fan of Karen and love what she did with her pages, she is the best!!
The tags are so much fun, I love love tags. So thank you once again for posting new links and new inspiration for me. I loved what everyone did.
I’ve got my fingers crossed for this one!!!

  • Julie, forgot to mention I would use these stencils for scrapbook pages and just having fun with my art. In watching you on TV and finding this blog I’ve taken your advice to not worry about making mistakes and instead use these creative opportunities to have fun and enjoy the process. Thank you for that!

  • I love all of these faces and would love to have them all. Two of the blogs would not open for me, there was
an error downloading them so I can’t give you a real
    favorite.
Your stencils are sublime and I would love to have any one of them.
Out of the two blogs I saw I liked Jen Cuchmans the best.
Her use of color and personalizing your stencil to fit
    her life is inspiring.
    Here’s to more bloghops.

  • First I thought I would try Karen’s idea – I love the size of the faces and the wonderful quotes.
Then I saw Paula’s wonderful page with the TAGS!! and fell in love with her idea too!
So can I choose two of these idea I’d mostly likely try?! LOL!!! I LOVE THESE HOPS – I’m so inspired after each one and more confused on what to get next (I already purchased four!!)! LOL!!

  • I love what everyone did with the stencils and if I had to choose…I would make a scrapbook page like the lovely one Jill made or I would make art journal pages like your own. I was afraid to try the faces (I have several of your others and love them) but now I am stoked to try them out! Thanks for the chance to win!

  • Well, I checked out the other blogs that used your face stencils and to be honest with you I wasn’t that impressed with any of them, except yours! Your use of these fabulous stencils put the others to shame. No one else seems to use these stencils as freely as you do, so I get my inspiration from you! I would love to win the Summer and Ava stencils to create journal pages and tags.

  • Sorry, but I think you made a mistake on one of the names. Ava should be Jessica because she looks so much like my daughter. Hmmmm. Will I have to go to court to change her name legally? LOL I love everything you do but I have to admit that being “drawing challanged” will not longer be a problem. Thanks for all your artistic encouragement.

  • I love all of these techniques but am most intrigued by the one you did on the tags with the Summer stencil. I love the effect of a resist and the use of a tag instead of a card with a gift – so clever – I’m looking forward to trying out this technique! I also enjoyed how the other ladies in the hop used the stencils – so much creativity! Thank you for sharing these techniques & for the hop!

  • I will be using these stencils in my art journal. I have wanted to have faces in my journal but never felt I could draw them without having “goofy” looking faces. Thanks so much for the wonderful stencils!!!

  • I love Jen’s artwork! Beacause Ilove fabric, and painting on fabric, and make useful things.
‘Summer’ and Hands are for me your best stencils!

  • Totally awesome stencil idea! I would love them all! So glad I discovered your site!
The first way I would use the face stencils are in my scrapbook pages! However, I am intrigued by the journal pages, I haven’t ever done an art journal and that would be a fun element!
    Thanks for sharing.

  • I really liked Jen Cushman’s use of the stencil on fabric and hers and yours use of showing half the face. I also want to use the negative of the stencil as you did for the tags. Lots of great ideas to try.

  • I just love these faces and the different ways to use them. I saw the Summer tags on you tube and just ordered them before this post. Now, I will definitely order the other faces. I’m working on my first art journal and I really love how creative you are. Thanks.

  • I would make an art journal page with either Ava or Summer (whose hair reminds me of my daughter’s, a bit.) There’s something kind of powerful about drawing/painting faces. . . .

  • I love what Karen Grunberg did – would totally try that! I love how versatile these faces are!!! I really want Edith and Maude in the 12×12 to be able to have the most options, I think.

  • I love the variety of techniques shown throughout the hop. I’d be most inclined to use the spray inks, as that is a supply I have on hand.

  • I would like to try Jill’s technique. The technique is simple but the look impressively sleek. I have just started using your stencils since taking your class in Toronto and I am enjoying the numerous ways and uses for them. I purchased more since the class at Bizzy B and one of your “faces” would really round out my collection. Just sent my fishbone card off to my son with a message of – “Something is missing around here!”

  • I have both the Ava (aka Bangs) and Summer and have loved the end results, it’s true I even feel more comfortable doing faces on my own now that I’ve used the stencils several times.
Thanks for sharing your creative genius. Would love to win a face stencil, even if it’s one I already have!

  • I am eager to try all the stencils but Summer grabs me the most. I have always been “fearful” of drawing a face in my art journal because I thought it would be goofy looking. These stencils definitely take the fear out of it! How exciting!!!
