STENCIL 101 ALERT: If you have not received an e-mail back from me granting you access to Stencil 101, you need to e-mail me again. All e-mails were answered within twenty-four hours. Please check your spam folder. I found many of your e-mails in my spam folder and since I sent about 500 e-mails (Special thanks to my Mom who saved my butt by stepping in to answer at least half of those on my behalf — thank you, Mom!) with similar content, I suspect the internet thinks I'm a spammer.
Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza! Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop! Each post comes with a giveaway. Leave a comment answering the question-of-the-day and you might be the winner of that day's featured stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12! Comments will remain open on this post for seventy-two hours. The winner will be announced after that. In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase any of the stencils there are many in-person and online shops to choose from (including my own little online shop). See a complete list here.
Today I've got another little stencil hop with four of my favorite paper artiste types:
- Ronda Palazzari: You'll remember Ronda's fabulous fabric clutch from last week. Her book Art of Layers: Simple Techniques, Inventive Scrapbook Pages, Imaginative Papercrafts
is currently available for pre-sale.
- Tammy Tutterow: Nicknamed "Tammy Tutorial," as you might imagine, Tammy's blog is a wealth of technique tutorials. She teaches online at Big Picture Classes.
- Danielle Flanders: Danielle is a card maker extraordinaire! She is also a long-time member of the Pink Paislee and Melissa Frances design teams.
- Jill Sprott: She is a master of mist and a Garden Girl at Two Peas in a Bucket. Her blog is beautifully written and I so admire Jill's design eye and spectacular color sense!
And which stencil did I send these talented ladies?
Meet TCW218 Henna Hands:
This is one of my favorite stencils! It's just so very different from anything I've seen around. I was totally inspired by some of the absolutely stunning doodly henna designs I've seen around Pinterest. (See some inspiring images here.)
Here is some sun printed fabric:
Of course, you can use the hands individually instead of all together:
Here's a project that uses the Henna Hands stencil from one of my talented students, Karen:
And I made this layout last night. I love how the hands are present, but you don't even realize the circle is made up of hands at first:
You can even make some super cute jewelry with just a little bit of know-how.
I made the larger pair from the 12×12 version of the Henna Hands stencil, and the small earrings from the 6×6 version of the stencil. Here's a size comparison:
But, wait! They're so much smaller than the stencils? How? What? Well, watch the video to find out:
To win both the 6×6 and 12×12 versions of the Triangle Plaid Stencil, answer the Question of the Day:
Which of the designers in today's hop has inspired you to try something new? And what is it?
Just a reminder: To be eligible to win, you must post your comment in the comment section of this blog post. You cannot post on Facebook or by replying to the e-mail (if you subscribe) in your inbox. The reason for this is that I pick a winner via "random number generator" so I need a single list of comments.
Thanks for stopping by! Now go and get hopping:

I’d have to say Danielle Flanders great cards will inspire me to try mists again. I have never had any luck with them but have not tired them with templates.

There are elements of all the designs that inspire! The earrings are awesome, henna fabric, handmade sun around your page….The most inspiring for me was Tammy’s sewn fabric hands..especially since my daughter wants to be Minnie Mouse for Halloween (great for my scrap page later and after our first trip to Disney)!

This is a stencil I haven’t seen before and not sure I would have thought of such unique ways of using it. My favorite… I loved the sun-kissed fabric made then into a clutch and the earrings are too darn cute.

Tammy’s quilted technique is super cool and one I wouldn’t have thought to try! I didn’t buy the hands stencil because I wasn’t sure what I’d do with it… but now I have lots of ideas!

Ronda Palazzari gripped me because I love to paint/work on fabric and then make something out of it. It’s definitely what I would do first with stencils.

My favorite is the quilted hand and tag of Tammy Tutterow. I want to try the fabric quilting and inks for a group of older ladies that I visit a lot. They will have fun but we will hand quilt the “hands”

what a very talented group of woman. of all the postings, i am most inspired by your “handmade” layout and i already know how i am going to put my own twist on it. I love how the repetition of the hands takes on an architectural effect. thanks for the inspiration and for sharing.

Tammy Tutterow always inspires me and teaches me through her blog (love her tutorials!). Her stencil project makes me want to dig out my sewing machine and try to figure it out again (Julie, can you come teach me how to sew pretty please??). And your earrings are soo cute that I do believe my shrink plastic will be peeking its head out today : )

I like the circle of hands in your layout. They looked like city buildings (maybe it’s because you recently posted about living in NY).
I will be open to using the stencils for things other than what they were intended.

You are the one that has inspired me. I am going to try shrink art. One Question. What did you have underneath your projects when you heated them?

I think all of you have great ideas using this stencil, but I liked the way Tammy used it to create the hand for the tag. Using it with fabric gives a totally new way to use it. Sure hope I win this one since it isn’t one that I have. Great ideas!

I love all these and since I’m new here it was fun to see so many different takes on the stencil. I love the idea of using this stencil for my kids and their artwork and my baby cousin’s layouts. Love his little chubby hands right now.
What a beautiful job on your homemade layout. Also the first one you shared too is my favorite of yours.
Out of the blog hop though it was Jill’s cute page on her dog. My dog does the same thing when I’m crafting/computer lays under my chair and reminds me to pet him.
Thanks for sharing these links and will visit them again.

i’m inspired by Danielle Flanders’ cards. When i think stencils, i think Art Journal/scrapbooking, i don’t know why i never made the leap to card making! (AHA moment!!)

Boy, I love these blog hops because I always am introduced to blogs and artists I’d not known before. Danielle has inspired me to try flipping the stencil over to create a reverse. I’ve used the “dirty” side of stencils to messily wipe off color onto future journal pages, but not tried to actually create a defined reverse image. And I learned about some great products from Tammy, particularly I need that Therm-o-web Super Stick, and would never have thought I needed the Picket Fences Distress Stain. Lastly, Julie, the shrink plastic? You win for coming up with yet one more clever way to use a stencil! As a new stencil user, I am looking at my little stash in a whole new way!

I love your handmade layout Julie! Wow! Everything you do is creative and unique. Thanks so much for asking me to join in on this fun. I had a blast creating with your stencils and will use them again in the near future for sure!

“HANDS” down (sorry – intended! LOL!!) it would be TAMMY~! I don’t sew. Knowing my luck I would sew my fingers to the project – seriously! Her tag was so unexpected and soft.
Everyone did such a wonderful job – it’s inspiring!

Tammy’s tag makes me want to become more adventurous with tags…fabric and paper combinations, sewing…the large tags are such a great background and I love the way the hand stencil worked as a dimensional element in this piece. So much generous inspiration with the introduction of your new stencils. Thanks for the chance to win.

hi Julie
I love your henna hands! Jill Sprotts misty inked designs are inspiring me to get out the spray bottle and play with some new techniques with collage and cards I”m making at the moment. I love the universal significance of your hand symbol, its just so tender and it works across all sorts of designs. And the printmade feel of Jills patterns and page look wonderful.
go gals!

All of you lovely ladies is so talented so each of you had fab ideas. I am going to say Ronda Palazzari simply because I always seem to want a different colour combos than what is available in fabrics so I have been thinking of starting to create fabric designs for myself.

I really couldn’t choose a favorite – I love your handmade layout with the subtle hands in a circle; I loved Tammy’s tag with the fabric/stitched hand; and lastly Danielle’s thank you card. I’m loving your stencil blog hops and your stencil 101 classes. Since I’m a quilter in addition to a paper crafter, I think I’ll try a stitiching project with this stencil. I can see it embroidered on a piece of linen.

OMG Julie!!! Absolutely in love with the henna hands stencils!!!! Wow, what possibilities. I most loved your layout with the hands stamped around in a circle as your background. What an eye you have!!! You made me think about using the henna hands and heat emboss them in my art journal with watercolor pencils in non-heat embossed areas. I loved Jill’s mini pocket book, because I’m working on a scrapbook of an Italy trip and have way more photos than will fit on the page. So I’ll just include the mini pocket book on the scrapbook page!!! Thanks so much for your inspiration!!! Tell your Mom we appreciate all the Stencil 101 passwords.

I love all the bloggers and their creations. But, Julie you have really opened my eyes with all your creations. I have always loved bright and colorful and you do it the best. I wasn’t sold on the stencils until on.

So many different ways to use stencils. They all provided a lot of inspiration. But the one project that caught my “eye” is the canvas by Ronda. Love how she used one stencil for the background. Great idea!

Rhonda’s work resonated with me the most – I wanted to touch the hands and explore their texture while admiring their purity. It makes me appreciate my senses so much more…

I have to say Tammy Tutterow has definitely inspired me (even though everyone really had some beautiful designs) but I’m finally getting my sewing machine tomorrow and can’t wait to try a lay out inspired by her design. Enjoyed the blog hop and meeting some new creative people!
Blessings,
Shanti

what a great stencil Julie. I love the circle you made with the hands, and the sun printing is very effective!.
out of the guest designers today, I was most inspired by Tammy’s use of the stencil with fabric and a tag. This is a great alternative use for the stencils.

I found the blog hop exceptionally inspirational. My favourite is Ronda Palazzi, loved her use of texture and colour. I am going to try a canvas and experiment with both. Thanks again for a fantastic site. Always extremely enjoyable.

Danielle Flanders is the one that inspired me the most…besides you, Julie! I love the way she used the stencil to actually create a kind of mask by letting the mist pool up on the stancil. I love that kind of ‘oups I made a mistake, but it turns out great’ moment!

A talented group of ladies, to be sure, but I love how you used the hands to look like wings on your layout. It would have NEVER occurred to me.

I like Tammy’s use of the stencil with sewing. For some reason I’d never thought of that and am now inspired to try it.

To pick just one designer is tough! They all put their own wonderful twist on their projects. But, I’m a sucker for a dog photo. Jill’s was my fav on her layout of her dog. I really like your shrink plastic earrings too. Thanks!

Danielle… what a lightbulb moment. Turn the stencil over and “stamp” with the excess. Love tips like that. BTW, this stencil has fantastic graphics!

Other than my favorite inspirational “Julie”!, I loved the post by Ronda Palazzari: her textures were so great. I definitely want to try the way she achieved her background textures before the top stenciling went on. I’m loving your stenciling posts! Read them every day. : )
Blessings….keep on creating : )

Shoot, it seems that my comment from yesterday was not validated.
I love these henna hands, and i think this is my favorite stencil (and I love yours Julie).
However, i find it hard to have a crisp design when working with spray inks. Even if I tape the stencil so it is as flat as possible on the journal page, it goes underneath and so the design gets wonky.
Any tip ?
Thanks <3

I love what Tammy tutterow did. I’m a fiber artist. Matter of fact, the first project I will do is a prayerful hand with words of inspiration tucked inside the quilted sandwich to mail to a very sick friend!

I cover this topic in my free online class stencil 101. Essentially its not about how flat you tape it. Use less mist for best results.

i loves it when i am watching henna on the hands. it does to make henna with the powder. to make henna it will take some time to finish the henna on the hands. to put the henna in the refrigator to keep it cold. i am going to get married to Aaron Dixon. first i love Aaron Dixon. it is going to be very nice and neat in the wedding and reception. Aaron Dixon loves Leisha lots as his girlfriends. because i am his sweetheart. Caitlyn loves Leisha so much as her best friend. i love Aaron and Caitlyn. because Aaron and Caitlyn are very special to Leisha more than i ever think in my dreams. i love you guys lots. Michael C is also special to Leisha more than i ever think in my dreams. Every body is so special to think about in my dreams when i am sleeping on my bed in my bedroom upstairs in my new house in twelve jenkins avenue. i am going to be making puzzles on the floor in the basement downstairs in my new house in twelve jenkins avenue. i have to go to the basement to see what is going on. i have to go now to see what is going on.
