Today we have a guest post from Lula Pomme that is going to make you giggle out loud!
Well Hello! Hello! How are all of you folks doing out there in the "Balzer Designs: Art Journal Every Day" world?
I can't believe it, but here I sit just typing away as "Julie" our most revered leader has asked me to do a post about these Crazy Wild Gypsy Girlz I actually draw out of my need for therapy! Ha! Ha!
I would like to take a moment here to not only thank Julie for allowing me the honor to be a part of her artistic world, but for giving me the chance to share my art with my fellow Art Journal Every Day participants! As each of you must know, you all feed my soul with your wonderful creativity! I tip my hat to each of you!
Well first and foremost let me tell you that I started this Art Journal Adventure for the first time this past January 2011 right here at Balzer Designs! That's right! It was that, "AAAAHHHH MOMENT" for me! Now in my fifties I was determined to take the time I needed to just simply create and have fun! This challenge has allowed me the freedom to do exactly that and has it ever been fun!
So let me get about the business at hand: producing a Guest Post!
Tools Of The Trade
So whatdya say….Let's get this party started!
Who Are These Crazy Wild Eyed Girlz?
These Girlz came about one day when I made a vow to myself that I would no longer use a pencil and an eraser. That whatever that Black Sharpie Chisel Marker drew was exactly what was going to get colored in that day! As you can see below (via my illustrations) I would just make a few simple stokes with Black Sharpie Chisel Marker in my Pacon Artist Sketch Diary then they were ready to be Colored In With Markers or Crayons (well whatever you have on hand would be just fine).
Plain Black Stroke Illustrations!
I actually did this sort of drawing so I would no longer be controlled by my perfectionism.
Oddly enough as I started posting my art on my blog, flickr and facebook my daughter, friends, family and even Julie began to comment on how cute, interesting, and appealing they thought these little Gypsy Girlz were! Here is a Birthday Greeting I sent my friend Sheila!
Somehow – I had found my voice! My art! It was "My Original Me." I would no longer try to paint, collage or alter my art to be like anyone else's – NOPE! Lula Pomme had found her voice and she was going to let it be heard. Even if it only consisted of on sketch diary, markers and crayons. Lula was good with that!
So what do you say? I think it is time to introduce you to these gals! I must warn you…Hang onto your Britches cause it is about to get Spicy Up In Here! You never know what these Girlz may say….So please take this as my disclaimer!
Well – honestly, even though I had found my artist voice, I really wasn't ever expecting that I would ever be Rembrandt, but I really wanted to be that Wonderful And Creative Gypsy Lula Pomme….But sometimes someone else gets in my way (that someone is usually me – Patty Ann Apple)….If you know what I mean!
After all, It isn't always easy having several people living in one person!
Up Oh! I can feel Lula trying to take over Patty Again!
GEEZ!
I just hate it when this happens!
Okay! Okay! Alright already I will tell them about you Lula. . . Just hold on!
You may ask . . . . Who is Lula Pomme?
Well that would be me Patty Ann Apple!
Look! Give me a break . . . . WHAT!
Hey! Wait a minute!
I see you smirking over there!
Don't You Be Hating!
After All, I am just asking for a little bit of credit here….
In reality…
So…
You can't blame Lula for trying to spice it up –
Hee! Hee!
No You Can't!
You two can't continue acting this way in public!
WOW!!!
Well that was embarrassing – I apologize!
Well back to my story . . . .
Knowing Lula personally, I had no doubt that this wild and crazy gypsy woman would take full responsibility for the personalities of these Little Missy's. So when it came to coloring in her little gals Lula chose only the biggest, the brightest, and most beautiful colors for my gals! She always has so much fun! Never boring with Lula!
Or Patty . . . .
Nope!!!
Never!!!
The End!
I am 53-years-old, married to Harvey and the mom of one incredibly talented 24-year-old daughter. I live flat dab in the very middle of Tennessee.
I have always been a bit on the eclectic side! I never do anything small – it has to be Grandiose.
I am a pianist! I have played the piano since the age of four.
I have worked as a Designer and Production Manager on Musical and Special Events. I love set design and anything theatrical.
I love big and bold clothing! Large jewelry. Marie Antoinette! I am crazy about any piece of Rococo furniture. I would like to build a tree house and live in it (well if I ever get any grandchildren)! I want to restore a vintage trailer! I love restoring furniture. Covering everything in Christmas lights. I would like to design large tote bags! I would love to design ponchos. Now you may ask, "Why a poncho?" I have no idea, but I would love to make a Cheetah Poncho with Hot Pink Roses all over it. I don't know – I just love anything by Betsey Johnson! Oh! I cannot forget Jeanne Bayol Artisan Made Coats! Oh My Goodness! They are full of the most brilliant colors one's eyes could ever hope to behold. They are simply out of this world.
When it comes to my art I like things colorful. I am in my eighth month of "Art Journal Every Day" with Julie. I am learning so much about Mixed Media Art that at times it makes my head spin. Honestly, it is just so exciting! I have so many things that I would like to try. I have to be honest…so far, I just love my Pacon Artist Sketch Diary and my markers. I don't know how much work there is for "Marker Artist" – Hee! Hee! but I sure have a lot of fun with those silly things.
One of my goals is to work more at collage and then painting, sculpture, jewelry, clothing, furniture and digital art.
One of my theories – if you find yourself interested in a certain type of art, just immerse yourself into researching it. Study different types of artists and then find your own voice. Make yourself heard in everything you produce. Keep in mind that it does not matter if one other person likes it, or even understands it – It is yours – So own it.
I love confident people. I love life! I love music! I love art!
Julie – You and this group have brought me back to life! No Words! Just "Thank You."
I would love for you guys to come visit and follow my two blogs and on Facebook:
Lula…wonderful blog entry and delightful girlz!
The colors are right up my alley…bright!!!
Thank you for this fun story of your art journaling and how you got started. Creating my own art is something that I am striving to do…to trust the inner me and not the perfect me I used to strive to be.
Thanks Julie for having Lula as a guest.

oh my goodness is this the funniest and beautiful story. I love that you are finding your inner artist and finding the joy from such simple tools. I have that sketchpad and love love my sharpies and my husband has given me a new box of crayons every year in my stocking since we’ve been married. He knows the way to my heart! This post has inspired me so much and reminds me of myself this year. I just turned 42 but in Jan. of this year after some deep thinking and seeing my daughter enjoy art I knew it was my time to try it. Sadly my story doesn’t get as far as yours though, I quit and start over and over because I doubt my work and keep thinking I’m to old to start this new interest of mine. So just hearing your story makes me feel inspired again and not to give up. So glad you were a guest speaker here today.
I love love your drawings and funny sayings with them. I had tears running down my face from laughing so hard. The girlz are gorgeous and bright and fun. Way to go on finding what works for you and going with it. So great to have found a “YOU” in this journey. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I plan on following your blog and being inspired even more.
Julie, thank you so much for sharing this sweet, talented lady with us today. I’ve been following you for months now and am inspired by everything you do. I hope between the two of you I will finally break out of my shell and shine like you ladies.
p.s. sorry I wrote a book here but I was so very moved by all this.
hugs, dawn

Go Dawn! its worth having a go, even the smallest go … things will grow bit by bit if you give yourself a bit of space and just play on the page. Its for you, its such a joyful thing to do, all this ‘art stuff’.
And thanks to Lula what a goer, funny and sassy and so energetic. Hard to put down the pencil sometimes but you’ve encouraged us to trust our selves more. Thats good!
thanks Julie, too for bringing out the beauty in all of us!

Sweet Dawn!
How lucky I am to have you enjoy my silly little art!
I want you to know that you should never doubt your art! Each and every one of else has something to say! When I decided to do Julie’s Challenge for the first few month’s I tired to just figure out what was going on! Oh My Goodness! I mean really, there are so many incredibly talented people in her group! So I made a promise that I would not compare myself to anyone for a year! That I would just draw with my markers until I felt more confident – But I still tried time and time again to copy what everyone else was doing! To be honest with you – It just didn’t work for me at all!
So . . . like my story goes – I struggled with my perfectionism, but one night I just gave up and put up my eraser and pencil. I was fed up with trying to make perfect art . . . So I just started drawing with my Black Sharpie Chisel Marker . . . And the rest is history! It was really freeing to just create something that was finally mine!
Dawn . . . Every woman I know desires to be spectacular! We all want to be great at everything we do . . . One thing that I love about being older is the fact I am finally comfortable with just who I am. I promise you this . . . Whatever you draw! Whatever you collage! Whatever you paint! Every single person in this group thinks you are spectacular! I challenge you to never give up . . . I am so looking forward to following your blog!
Just Draw!
Just Paint!
I HAVE NO DOUBT IT WILL BE SPECTACULAR!
So glad to have you as a friend!

Thank you Lula!! I needed to hear these encouraging words and to know that you struggle too. It is very hard for me to see everyone’s artwork even just simple drawings that look amazing to me. I keep wanting mine to be that amazing but they just look so plain. I will keep trying and do a little bit each day for a whole year and see what happens.
Thanks again,

Thank you Rosie for cheering me on. How sweet of you to think of me and give out some encouragement. I know it’s all about playing and I am hard on myself. Going to give this a real “GO” and see what happens. Hope you are having fun with whatever you do too.
