Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza! Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop! Each post comes with a giveaway. Leave a comment answering the question-of-the-day and you might be the winner of that day's featured stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12! Comments will remain open on this post for seventy-two hours. The winner will be announced after that. In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase any of the stencils there are many in-person and online shops to choose from (including my own little online shop). See a complete list here.
Today I've got a treat for you! I've got a little stencil hop with four of my favorite paper artiste types:
- Ronda Palazzari: A paper artiste extraordinaire Ronda's book Art of Layers: Simple Techniques, Inventive Scrapbook Pages, Imaginative Papercrafts
is currently available for pre-sale.
- Nathalie Kalbach: Miss Nat is the Tattered Angels Design Team Coordinator, and an amazing teacher. She teaches all over the world and online as well!
- Paula Phillips: The number one name given in response to the question, "Who rocks stencils?" was this girl! Paula's DVD Layered & Textured Backgrounds: Art Journaling Tips & Tricks is currently available for purchase.
- Doris Sander: Long time Marketing Director for Jenni Bowlin Studio and frequent teacher at Masterful Scrapbook Design, you have certainly seen Doris' gorgeous layouts in every single one of the scrapbook magazines!
So what stencil will these four girls be showing off today?
Meet TCW221 Triangle Plaid:
I designed it after a visit to the Neue Galerie – a small museum here in Manhattan. I stared long and hard at this painting by Klimt:
It's called "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer." The museum bought it for an amazing $135 million! I stood in front of this wonderful painting and I drew this simple sketch:
That sketch filtered through my brain to become two stencils: the Triangle Plaid stencil and the Circle in Square stencil!
The Triangle Plaid stencil has a kind of funky, vaguely Egyptian feeling to it and I think it's great for covering a background:
You can see that I used both sizes of the stencil on this page. The large size in gold paint and the smaller one with colored spray inks.
And here's an art journal background just waiting for something:
But of course, it's not just reserved for your art journal! Watch this video…
…to see me put together this layout…
The Triangle Plaid stencil even works as an embroidery pattern:
Another few long plane trips and this hoop will be done!
To win both the 6×6 and 12×12 versions of the Triangle Plaid Stencil, answer the Question of the Day:
What is your favorite project from the five blogs in today's blog hop and why?
Just a reminder: To be eligible to win, you must post your comment in the comment section of this blog post. You cannot post on Facebook or by replying to the e-mail (if you subscribe) in your inbox. The reason for this is that I pick a winner via "random number generator" so I need a single list of comments.
Thanks for stopping by! Now go and get hopping:

P.S. I just want to say thank you to the all the people who sent me sweet notes and kind words when asking for access to Stencil 101. Your enthusiasm and compliments really made me smile! It *almost* made having to respond one-by-one to hundreds and hundreds of e-mails an enjoyable task. Almost. (I think I underestimated how many people would be interested in the class! My inbox has been exploding!)

Love the embroidered hoop which leads me to think it would be great for tree ornaments and vest patches or even several squares on a pouch purse. You always inspire me!

I love Ronda’s clutch! It’s such an original idea, and the fact that the flower is also handmade adds to the originality of the whole project.
Now I REALLY wish I knew how to sew!!
Everyone did a great job, but Ronda’s really makes me want to reach out and touch, touch, touch!!

Oh I would really love to win this stencil! It looks fantastic. My favourite project is Ronda’s use of the stencil on fabric, particularly in her clutch purse. I just love the colour combinations and the versatility of the stencil. It makes me want to get out my under-used sewing machine and start sewing.
Lee:)

I love the story of how you were inspired to create this stencil, Julie. I actually have a few rubber stamps that I carved that are Klimt inspired shapes too.
I think my favorite use of the stencil was Ronda’s fabric. I didn’t know that heat setting the Maya Mists would make them bleed proof ! Great tip and a beautiful result !
Thanks for the giveaways, Talented One !

I loved all the projects but I would have to say my favorite was the layout by Doris Sanders. I mainly do scrapbooking and cards and have just started out into art journaling so I think that one spoke to me the most.

Liked all of them, each and every one so different, but my fave is Ronda’s fabric, especially the red and blue/violet she hasn’t “worked” yet and the second best is your art journal page still waiting to be completed.
I have to say that when I first saw this particular stencil, I wasn’t drawn to it but now that I have seen the potential of it, I love it!

Hard to choose a favorite! The colors that these ladies created with are just gorgeous. I think my favorite would have to be the clutch by Ronda. I would love to have one of these. I think I just might be brave enough to try it! Thanks so much for the chance to win! Your templates are absolutely wonderful and versatile (need spell check!).

Good Morning, Julie,
I really enjoyed visiting all the blogs you listed! My preference, however, would be Paula Phillip’s blog because I loved her used of color, value and composition. What could be better than that?
Just love your stencils, I have most of them now, just want one more. Isn’t that a common refrain, lol?
Best,
Bobbie

Not an easy task to choose ONE…you love to see us squirm!!! If I have to choose one it would be your embroidery stitching. I’ve been doing a lot of embroidery hand stitching and just love the “feel” of it. Even uneven stitches don’t send me into a tailspin any more. It gives character, right? I’d love to use your stencil/example on cotton shirts that I’ve been holding on to for embellishing. Next up…Rhonda’s work!!!

My favorite actually is a tie between Ronda and Paula! I loved seeing Ronda’s fabric and then the clutch made from it. I am taking Alisa Burke’s “Beneath the Surface” class, so this is right up my alley.
But Paula’s gesso ghosting technique is one I’m going to try immediately! I love learning new techniques and Paula showed me several in her tutorial.

What a fun hop!! Thanks to everyone for all the inspirational projects!! I’d have to say your embroidery was my favourite piece, Julie. A really unique application of the stencil, and something I had not thought of using the stencil for….but now I will! ha ha!

Amazing stuff all around Julie! Couldn’t just choose one, so I’m listing two faves. I loved Paula’s for the depth and texture she created, and I guess I love Nathalie’s for the same reason. I want to reach out and touch both pieces!

Wow such inspirtation! I think Ronda’s post was the one that “Made My Heart Sing”.
Julie’s was so wonderful because she did something so different with the stencil. Hmmm what else could you do?

I gotta say it’s a tie between Ronda’s clutch and your embroidered piece. I love how art’s journey can take me back to my first love – fabric. I did find all the designs and techniques wonderful and useful! Thanks Julie!

Like so many others, I just love Ronda’s clutch! It’s so colorful and cute!
I love that the stencil is inspired by that particular Klimt painting – I watched the documentary “The Rape of Europa” recently (it’s about the theft of art items by the Nazis) and learned about that painting’s history. I would love to be able to see it in person someday.

I actually liked your projects the best. You rocked it with different colors and sizes of the stencils. My question is, who has a complete stock of your stencils? I have ordered from two different companies but nowhere have I seen this stencil!
Aloha, Kate
P.S. Can’t wait for the class to start next week!

The Klimt inspiration – lush image over and surrounded by the smaller, repeated geometrics…helped to see shapes differently. I liked your scrapbooking fast forward…I like to mask, use a vintage Tria/airbrush set-up and could see my own pages taking shape as I watched you prepare the background. And your joyful colors match my favorite palette. Thanks so much for your offer and the fun of today’s blog hop.

Julie,
love your new stencil design. Thanks so much for sharing your inspiration. That’s fantastic.
Your examples are very appealing to me.
But I was really taken back by Paula’s use of Color Wash & gesso. That’s a new technique to me & so glad to know about it since I just got a collection of recently released CW stencils at the local scrapbooking shop. I’d put in a request the same day I saw them here on your blog & they just arrived last week. Oh happy day!
Thanks for all your fun inspirations.

Hi Julie,
Wow, hard to choose. Ronda’s fabric is really cute. But my favorite is Nathalie’s texture. The use of template just made my fingers want to get busy!

I think Ronda’s fabric is the most intriguing to me right now. There was so much to look at during the hop, but I keep coming back to the fabric and saying “I can do that.”

I love it all but Paula Phillips’ art journal page speaks to me even though she didn’t use the stencil.

Miss Nat design made me stop reading and go create. I loved the layers and how she used two of your stencils. It was great. I did like the way Paula used your artwork and felt bad she did have the stencil. I knew she would have rocked it! But I look forward to Saturday when she will use it.

I think my favourite is the embroidery – I’m just beginning to branch off in this direction and hadn’t thought of using stencils in this way. It’s opened up a whole new vista! And I just love geometric patterns too!

I want to tip my hat to Paula Phillips. She was very resourceful when she made the collage in her art journal! Sometimes you dont have what you want and so use what you’ve got! Thanks for doing that.

my fave is Rhonda’s project! I love the look of the stencil on the fabric. It’s not something i’d do, cuz i’d probably end up sewing my thumb to my elbow, but i soooo love the look of it. Jealous. 😀

Do I have to choose only one? really?
I love the original and stunning Ronda’s clutch.
I would swim in the mixed media, texture and depth of Nat’s canvas.
Stunning Paula’s journal page, even without your stencils.
And love the colourful layout from Doris.
But my favorite of this creative blog hop is your layout in your video. Maybe the colours, the simplicity I don’t know why but it makes me smile. I love it!

I really liked Ronda’s clutch and the concept of using these stencils for fabric. Her projects were conceptually simple…the layering found on the other blogs was harder for me to internalize. And it is no wonder your stencil tutorial is so popular! You do make their use so approachable for layouts..I just want to try it!

I love this stencil and all the ways it is being used. Thanks for having the blog hop. Your embroidery is going to be gorgeous when it’s finished. I haven’t picked up an embroidery hoop in years, but I could find one of my old ones if I looked hard enough. Love it!

Although I adore your colors Julie, I am just amazed at how wonderful the use of a stencil would be on fabric so I am voting for Ronda Palazzari’s blog post since you asked us to pick one. The beauty of being able to create fabric in any color is awesome – plus still make the gorgeous background for pages or other paper projects. I love your scrapbook page, the colors are so bright and really set such a happy mood here.

Well, I have two – Ronda’s little fabric bag and Nathalie’s background. I guess if I HAD to pick only one, it’d be Nathalie’s background. I love the depth of color with all the different shapes going on.

Not easy to pick, but, I have to go with Rhonda because of the color and the unexpected use.

They are all terrific, but the one I will probably use the most and forever was Paula Phillips’ gesso over Color Wash! I did a lot of gesso-ing and playing this past week, and I found that Ranger’s Distress Daubers do the same thing–rise up through the gesso AND through white acrylic paint, too! Now that I know Color Wash works like that, I will have fun with that too! And the stencils are awesome!

the art displayed in the other blogs is gorgeous but you had me at Klimt. I have enjoyed his art work for a long time – even had a poster of THE KISS when i was in college. He is the king of zentangles! I love your blogging Julie.

It’s really hard to choose. You with your stitching with your stencil, Paula with all her texture, Ronda with her purse… They were all inspirational. Thanks.

All the projects were fantastic using this awesome stencil. I love your idea for using the stencil for embroidering. My favorite project would have to be Ronda’s altered fabric and the darling purse she made with it.

I loved the pencil pouch that Rhonda made using stenciled fabric. I know it’s a clutch, but I’d put pens and pencils in it. It’s really neat to see your planning process for the stencil. Thanks for a great giveaway.

I love how each of you have a beautiful and unique approach to using the stencil. I of course love Ronda’s fabric amazingness, I kept coming back to it, and loving the creativity. Each of the ladies did great work, though…I’m very inspired.:)

Hi Julie,
The embroidered hoop on your post is my favourite… Embroidery’s my first love and I enjoy playing with rubber-stamped images. I’d never thought to do it with stencilled ones though, so that’s definitely on my to-do list – and I can see this image with lots of french knots, beads and sequins.

Well, that was a lot of fun; seeing how different artists use the same stencil. I really enjoyed Paula’s tutorial on color washes and how to solve a problem creatively when the stencil doesn’t arrive in the mail on time.

I love all the projects, but since I just became obsessed with art journaling, I would have to say the first completed pages with the woman using the Triangle Plaid and Circle in Square would be my fave. I love the colors and how you journaled on her face with no distraction. Love Crafters Workshop and looking forward to playing with all their new stencils. Thanks for the opportunity to win a

I love all of the projects using your lovely stencil, but I was particularly tickled with Paula’s project with her solution for slow postal delivery and great use of gesso in creating dimension and texture. I can’t wait to try it myself!

Am I too late? Worked a FULL day yesterday. Won’t do that again. LOL I am just a sucker for Art Journals. I love Paula’s page and thought her quite clever since she hadn’t rec’d the stencil yet. I am starting to experiment with fabric so Ronda’s came in second. Thanks for the enjoyable coffee break and for your generosity.

Everyone of these sites are beautiful and inspire me in
a different way.
Being a rank beginner at such an advanced age, I find
Paula helps me to stop worrying that it’s not perfect
and to stop trying to make it that way.
I used to throw pages away before but not anymore.
Some day I hope to be able to use some of all your ideas
and make something that I’m not afraid to show others.
Thanks for all your input.

This is a match made in heaven! Julie’s designs + Crafter’s Workshop stencils. I love what Rhonda did with the patterned material she made with your stencil, the clutch is adorable. I also love how Paula incorporated the black and white stencil into her journal pages. Great job ladies.
Thanks for the opportunity to win these stecils!

I love your stencils and have several and would love to add this one to my collection.
I loved Ronda’s little clutch the most. In addition to playing with paper, I love to sew; so Ronda’s project hit my two loves.

Isn’t it wonderful how art inspires other art??? It’s like we are all connected with it…personal, deep connection. The same, but different. And it doesn’t stop with us but is timeless!!! My favorite is the embroidery. It just gives it a different, unexpected feel to it, using it as embroidery versus on paper with sprays. Thank you for sharing your inspiration!

I loved all of the projects on the blog hop but I will have to say the fabric that Ronda did was wonderful along with the clutch she made. I did enjoy how Paula improvised when she didn’t receive her stencil in time. Great work by everyone and thanks for the opportunity to win this wonderful stencil. I will keep my fingers crossed!
