Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza! Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop! Each post comes with a giveaway. Leave a comment answering the question-of-the-day and you might be the winner of that day's featured stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12! Comments will remain open on this post for seventy-two hours. The winner will be announced after that. In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase any of the stencils there are many in-person and online shops to choose from (including my own little online shop). See a complete list here.
Meet RCW227 Chevron:
Chevrons are all the rage lately, aren't they? A quick search on Pinterest comes up with thousands of entries:
Clothing, home decor, paper crafts…chevrons are everywhere! Feeling inspired, I put together this background…
And I loved it so much that I decided I had to do a video tutorial on how to create that chevron background.
And since I had the pink-on-pink chevron paper, I decided to make another layout:
But I couldn't let my scrapbook have all the fun! I made some tags too:
The chevron design is actually embossed onto the tag.
Tags are a great way to experiment with techniques and ideas. They're sturdy and a great size. Often when I find a technique I like I'll scribble the instructions on the background. It makes an excellent reference tool.
This tag uses watercolor:
And this one uses pan pastels and acrylics:
I love, love, love the stamp set I used to stamp "frustrated." I bought it when I was out in Chicago and I can see I'm going to get a lot more use out of it!
Finally, I played in my art journal:
As you can see, I also used the Edith and Maude face stencils on this one.
To win both the 6×6 and 12×12 versions of the Chevron Stencil, answer the Question of the Day:
What is a question you have about stenciling?
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. If you make something using any Balzer Designs products please upload them to the Balzer Designs flickr group!

My question is – how do you get your images so neat when using sprays? I always seem to end up with a smudgey mess. I’ve tried using less spray but still not much luck. It’s driving me crazy!!

This stencil is so great!!!! I need it, since I’m totally on Missoni prints (thanks Target, to give me the chance to own a Missoni, lol…) and I’m crazy about making chevron projects on those juicy combinations… My question , not sure if appropriate, but would be: what do you look in a pattern (or design) to think it will work as a stencil?
Love the neutral tags! And tks for the tutorial!

i have so many questions about stencils. i guess the main one would be: how hard is it to try making my own? and how durable are they?

The question I have about Stenciling is what is the best way to clean the stencil? All mine have ink stains on them because most of the time I don’t have time to clean as I remove the stencil. All of your stencils are wonderful, would love to win any of them, thanks for a chance. e-mail is hwright2008@carolina.rr.com

Hello! Thanks for all the tips and the tutorial. My question is: do you sometimes use your stencils one on top of another directly, that is piling them, or always one after another?

Love the chevron pattern!!! My question is, how do you use the stencil in a journal spanning the center humps? The design on your journal page looks continuous. Do you only use large stencils on center pages that lie flat?

The JBS design team has been working with (who am I kidding? — PLAYING with) this stencil. It’s in the September artisan kit, and I know we are all loving it!

I have problems keeping my paper clean when I work with stencils. With each line or pass I make, the stencil picks up some of the pencil/ink/paint and I inevitably drag that down my paper. Any hints to keep it cleaner?

My question is how do you hold the stencil down when using it? I always end up messing things up (more than I would like!) because I’m using one hand to hold the stencil and the other to apply paints etc.

I love to use these stencils, but I hate to clean them…Do you clean your stencils after using them with paint? (When I use them with mist the cleaning is much easier..)

So I said the flower was my favorite and while I don’t want to seem fickle, I think, maybe, that this one is my new favorite! I love the way you used it to guide you to the bigger chevron on your page layout. Love that idea. Thanks Julie for another great post.

I love your stencil posts! I would have asked about not smearing but that one seems to be asked already… So my question is have you thought about making an alpha stencil? I can think of so many uses for that kind of stencil, too!

Others have asked the question too – how do you stop the ink from running underneath the stencil and ending up with a big mess?

Love that chevron stencil… sooooo many possibilities! I share the question about the smearing issue, but also want to ask do you use anything particular to line up the stencil when you’re layering?

Mine was actually the same question as Diane above. Especially when you’re using spray inks – is there a trick to not letting it run and smear underneath the stencil?

I love your videos – they are brilliant! My long time question is how do you prevent spray ink from leaking underneath the stencil and making a smutchy image. I try holding it down with my fingers, but that doesn’t really work, and I spend days getting the ink off my fingers.

My question is, do you ever make your own spray ink? If so, how? I have a few colors, but would like more, without having to go out and buying them.

I think my questionn disappeared so I am going to put it through again in case I did something wrong… Do you prefer to use your stencils with paints and pencils or do you also like to use them with mediums such as molding paste? Is it harder to use them with mediums?

I can use stencils individually or as a one-off, but I would like more instruction about how to layer and combine them. In the new Cloth Paper Scissors e-mag you talk about hacking your stamps. Do you have interesting ways of hacking your stencils?

great layouts and tags! the problem I have with stencils is when I try to use spray inks (like rangers for example) with stencils in my art journal, i end up with a big sloppy mess, even if I try to blot over the stencil before picking it up. What is the trick??

I’d love to win this awesome stencil! Question: Are stencils with a smaller/tighter pattern easier to use than those with larger open spaces? I have never used any so I’ll be trying for the first time. Thanks for the chance to win. BTW, darling picture of you in the pink on pink chevron LO!

Thanks for the inspiration.

I gave up on stencils years ago because I could never get a clean edge when using paint, etc. It would always leak under the edges ruining the design no matter how firm I held the stencil down. So, how do you get a clean edge when using paint, ink, etc?

I would love some tips on storage for the stencils. I don’t want to keep them in the original packge, because it’s a pain to put them back in. But if I leave them all out of the package, I find they get tangled.
Loving the possibilities for the chevron!

Im having storage problems aswell. For some reason I always end up having my stencils all tangled up, because the originalpackinging is so easy to break…

Thanks Julie for another great video tutorial! My question is how do you organize your stencils? I have started collecting so many stencils (including your designs!) because they can be used in so many ways (scrapbooking, journaling, card marking, etc.), and I think they are super cost effective. I find it hard to remember what I have. Do you have a clever way to store them? Do you keep a list of what you have? Or, do you have a much better memory them me??? Don’t answer the last question…I know the answer…ha!
Thanks for the great giveaway!

I love, love this stencil. Thank you so much for designing them.
My Question for the day is “Should you use a spouncer or a sponge to
apply your ink to the stencil if you are not using spray?
Have a nice day.

I know this will seem like an odd question: but do you have any tips for making masks of the NEGATIVE parts of a stencil? I like to use a stencil, but then when I go in and work on the parts masked out by the stencil, I like to “guard” the bits I’ve worked on from spritz, blobs, etc. Thanks!

It seems one big QOTD is smearing. I too want to know how to prevent bleeding.
Oh and as one reader mentioned, Target’s Missoni ad immediately came to mind when I saw your stencil and I also thought of you when I first saw the ad. Yay chevrons.

Love this pattern. Just ordered it and can’t wait to get it. My question is – how to keep the stencils, especially the large ones, flat while working. I try to clip when I can, but it’s not always possible. I usually bump it and mess things up.

Julie – LOVE the Chevron stencil! My question is multi-faceted. How many ways are there to use stencils? (THAT’s loaded question!) And which way do you like best to use your stencils?

I have a problem with thinking of different ways to use stencils other than the obvious ways. I enjoyed your video tutorial which gives me other ideas about how to use that chevron stencil besides simply tracing the lines or painting or inking them.

I would like to know the best medium to use to get a clear design from the stencils. I have tried using liquid sprays (Ranger Colorwash and Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist) and watercolor and acrylic paints but they seem to result in a lot of leaking under the stencil and no clear design when done. Would watercolor pencil be better? Or maybe a way to make the stencil stay flat, especially the 12 x 12 size when using it in a journal and you can’t get the pages totally flat?

I love the Chevron stencil, I can see so many usses for it.
My question is DO you use stencils to embelish other things in your home, like furniture, walls, window treatments etc…?
Also like others have ask: How do you store your stencils?
~Tammy~

I had 2 questions and they have both been asked. How do you store them? And hwow do you keep the spray from running underneath? I love your blog and watch your videos all the time. The first thing I look for when I open my e-mail is your e-mail. You give such awesome tips.

Love your video and love how you used the stencil in a way that I wouldn’t have thought to use it! My question is do you ever use a stipple brush with your stencils? I’ve tried and tried and I never get a good result. Also, how do you store your stencils? I already lack in the organization department, but I really am struggling with my stencils. I keep them in their original packaging, but it doesn’t work so well..thanks for your help Julie-you rock!

Love your blog, I visit as often as I can. My quesiton is, can these stencils be used in an embossing machine? Has it been tried? What type of machine and what were the results?

I’ve always wondered how to get better definition around my stencils, especially when using a really wet medium. It always seems to pool on the slick surface of the stencil and inevitably ends up where I don’t want it. I love it when I’m going for a messy look, but I’m craving a more graphic edge. Any tips for getting clean edges without resorting to a thicker medium, like paint?

I really like the look of chevrons — I’m not too cool for trends — ha, ha My question about stenciling would be: what do you use to clean paint off the stencil?

Great stencil and loving all the ideas for using it. So creative! My question is …do you have any advice for stopping the paint/spray etc. from oozing under the stencil and losing the shape of the design? Thanks!

Genius stencil design! I was wondering how you were going to get those large chevrons from that stencil. I love visiting your blog each day to see what new things you’ve come up with, Julie. You are a creative dynamo.
My question – if you could only have one stencil, which one would it be? I have the same questions about clean edges that everyone else has, so thought I’d ask something different. 🙂
Thanks so much for all your inspiration, and especially for your incredibly helpful video tutorials.

Awesome stencil! I would love to win it. My question is, how do you stop your sprays and inks from bleeding when you are stenciling? I like sharp edges, but I never seem to be able to accomplish that, or not very often anyway.

Well… I don’t know about everybody else, and maybe I’m still a little wet behind the ears on this kind of thing, but I’m wondering if you could SHOW, or better explain??.. how you did the embossing on you tags, using the template/stencil as shown above?? Pretty please?? What kind of embossing powder(s) did you use here, or should I ask what do you prefer?

I’ve always liked the Chevron shape. I’ve used stencils in the past, on wooden craft projects for my nieces, on the wall, etc. Do you clean off the “back” of your stencil before placing it in another area, to stencil again? I always feel like I should wipe off the back of it before moving on and using it in the next space in case anything leaked on the back. Do you ever use spray adhesive?

Oh my gosh – I LOVE this. I think I know where my allowance is going this month 🙂
I also can’t figure out how to use a stencil over the center binding in my art journal. I’ve tried winging it and it’s not very sharp or effective in the middle. When I shove the stencil into the crease and do each side separately they don’t seem as unified.

The thing I like most about your stencils and stamps is that you show us so many ways to use them. I would never come up with these ideas on my own. You give me more than one reason to make a purchase. Ah my broadening horizon. Thanks!

When I use paint on a stencil, I feel like I waste a ton of it. How do you apply paint to a stencil to use the smallest amount?
Love Flying High and sorry that folks keep on asking you for things…can I win this stencil please (ha ha).

I absolutely LOVE the Crafter’s Workshop stencils!! My question is do you sometimes make your own sprays to use in stenciling, and if so, what waterproof products do you recommend as the color base for the spray?

I really love your stitched chevron backgrounds. Beautiful!! I guess my biggest question is what is the best way to hold a stencil in place while you are using it, in order to get a clean line?

Adore the Chevron stencil, thanks for tutorial
as well. Questions would have to be the same as
others, how to prevent leakage underneath, best
way to clean and store them.
Thanks for the opportunity to win.

I am in love with these chevron stencils!! I’m inspired by how you used the stencil as a pattern to cut out your patterned paper. My question is “what other uses are there for stencils besides the obvious inking and painting techniques I usually see?”

Julie, do you cut your own stencils with a heat tool? And could you use a soldering iron with a fine tip to do it?
LOVE this post – the chevrons are fab! =)

Why aren’t directional stencils made in both left and right hand versions so you can use temp adhesive on them and not have them stick to your fingers when you turn them over?

I think I need this stencil.
My question: Do you use any fixative between layers when you use more than one stencil or just let the colors below blend?

Julie, my question is about stencil brushes. I have some old ones I used to use when stenciling on fabric and they seem stiff – not painty stiff or unwashed stiff but just a different kind of bristle than the stencil brushes I see now at the craft store. What will the different results be in use? Are your brushes stiff or a little resilient?

omg, I love your in love layout…. love love love it. I think I know the answer but my question would be that at times, if I work with acrylics (sometimes even mists) the paint seeps underneath the stencil so the design is not very sharp/clear… if that makes any sense.

All of my questions are above but I would really like to know how do I control the image when combining mediums? The paint dabs on well, but as soon as I try to combine, it falls apart. (ps I am drying inbetween layers.)

Just loving your stencils – so many possibilities.
My stencil question is… what’s the best paint/ink to use if you want to also get a good print out of the stencil when you’re done?

I read recently about using food coloring on a kitchen sponge for stenciling. Have you ever done this? I’m anxious to try, but not sure how the food coloring compares to inks.
The Chevron stencil is very cool! I ordered a few of your stencils earlier in the week…but I can’t remember if I ordered this one or not! Guess I’ll just have to be surprised. Anyway, a great post (as always). Thanks so much!

Lots of questions, but I guess my main one is: what is the best material to make your own stencils? I haven’t found the right one yet. So far I’ve tried cardboard (impossible to clean!) and that stuff where they print x-ray pictures (no idea what’s the name of that, I’m ESL)(also, way too slippery)
Non stencil-related question: is this giveaway US-only?

Another great post, great stencil Julie!! I think most of my questions that I might have had, have been asked. I think storage would be the one question to ask. Like so many supplies, when you accumulate a lot of something, it’s difficult to remember what you have. Any suggestions?

awwwww you are so adorable I love all your Chevron samples and I am looking forward to purchasing some of your stencils for sure. I have difficulty with the big stencils… and my glitter mist running under and blending the design away espescially on some of the more intricate stencils. So how to get a clean impression? And it taping them down a good idea?

Hello, the Chevron is great. I have two questions. One general: How do you clean them, especially gesso and paints? One specific to your stencils: Are the 6×6 templates a smaller scale, or just a smaller overall size? It is sometimes hard to tell from the pictures. Thanks!

I absolutely love all the Chevron ideas- especially the journal! Your lines are amazing! How on earth do you get your stencil work so perfect- years of practice? I have glimmer mists I would love to stencil with but I’m scared they will smear/run. What do you recommend? Is there a particular stencil that is better to use with them? Since I am new to stencil techniques…is there a beginniner’s guide to stenciling maybe? You are brilliant 🙂 Thanks!

Oh my this is such a fabulous stencil!!! My question has to do with working with Pan Pastels and stencils. I’ve used a fixative (Krylon) and it still smudges or comes off after. Is there a better or another fixative I could use?

I love to stencil about anything; paper, fabric, walls, etc.; however, I seem to get “bleeding” with most of the things I stencil even if I use stencil tape to hold the stencil. I am thinking I must be doing one little thing wrong. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is incredible – your creativity just inspires me so much! My question is similar to others, but I too want to know how to have a clean look with sprays? I’ve hesitated trying to use an adhesive to hold the stencil down because of being afraid of residue after taking off, but is that the best way?

Hmm. Hard to come up with a question that has not already been asked! I would like to know if you recommend a specific kind/weight of molding paste for use with stencils on canvas vs. cardstock. Thanks!

I wish I could have gotten into this one. I love that stencil!
My question is why do beginners have a hard time making stencils work for them? Ink bleeds or paint for them. Is it just a thing that you have to get experience?

I have two questions actually: 1) how to store; and 2) how to clean stencils.

What is the best way to clean & store stencils and keep paint from oozing underneath stencil when using it?
Love the Chevron and just purchased several
of your other stencils today, the faces and
hands and look forward to using them. Thanks

I am just loving stencils right now, just bought a whole bunch of them but when I started to play with them I was a bit frustrated that they smear underneath so easily. Is it the medium or just me needing some practice?

Easy! How do you stop a stencil from bleeding out under the edges? and are there any easy ways to hold them in place?

I don’t mind imperfection in my art, including in my stenciling…so I am not stressed about getting a perfectly clean image…but I WOULD like to know how on earth you get multiple layers of stenciling to show up – and not just all end up running together in one big muddled mess! 😉

My question is about the pest way to get a good impression using acrylic paint! I have been using the 6×6 fractured flower stencil and the only way I can get an image that is close to recognizable is by using gesso or pan pastels. Any pointers for using acrylic craft paints? I’ve been using a credit card to smear.

I have lusted after this stencil since I first saw you use it. I guess my question is similar to others – do you use some kind of stencil adhesive to get clear lines and if so, which one. I’ve done some stencils just holding them down if I’m not looking for crisp edges, but sometimes that’s what I want and would like guidance on how to get that. Thanks!

Shoot, I shouldn’t have read the comments before commenting, because I feel like I’m repeating one of the other questions. But they were all so good! I’m wondering about using stencils with non-obvious media, like I know how to spray with a stencil, but what about other media? Do you ruin a pastel, for example, by rubbing it all over a stencil? I loved this chevron technique & I want to try it!
