I Fail More Often Than I Succeed

I was shocked by the number of commenters on this post who expressed surprise at my project being rejected for publication.  First of all, thank you!  Your kind words always make me feel so much better.  And second, I get rejected all the time.  I just don't blog about it.

Rejection is just a part of the game.  It comes with the territory.  So let's have a little chat about it.

Being Rejected for Publication

TheFirstNight-REJECTED
No matter who you are, no matter how talented you are, you will submit for publication and get rejected.  Being published in a magazine is all about fit.

What does that mean?

Well, for instance, the way I scrapbook is not appealing to everyone.  In fact, it's not appealing to most scrapbookers.  I've been called messy, scattered, un-focused, product vomiter, and so on, more times than I can think of.  So the artwork I submit to the traditional scrapbooking magazines (Scrapbooks Etc., Creating Keepsakes, Scrapbook Trends) tends to be the more restrained stuff.  Mostly graphic with a tiny bit of artsy.  Those magazines also like to see multi-photo layouts, and layouts with kids.  The former I can give them, the latter, not so much.  But I'm thoughtful about what I send in and I pretty much get rejected 90% of the time regardless.

Besides all the considerations I've shared, remember that magazines are looking for layouts that fit into their seasonal theme, any editorial theme, and that fill an open niche.  Even if your project is gorgeous, it can still get rejected for a thousand reasons:

  • Out of season (winter layout for summer issue)
  • Photos are not up to par (photos sell a layout as much as the design)
  • Another layout already uses that product (if you use a recognizable embellishment or patterned paper, it's possible that they already have a project using it and two is too many)
  • Wrong colors (they need blue and yours is red)
  • Project too complex for readers (people want to open the magazine and feel that they can replicate the project)
  • Too many of the same thing (everyone has a Christmas layout with a photo of a tree)
  • Technique already being used (the technique on your layout was featured in the last issue or is going to be used by another layout)
  • And so on and so forth

The example I've used is from submitting to scrapbooking magazines, but the same holds true in many other categories.  I know artists who've had their project on the cover of a magazine and then been told that the magazine couldn't use any more of their work for a year because they got complaint letters about using the same people over and over.  Magazines have a lot of balls to juggle, so don't take it personally.

Being Rejected for Design Teams

Headshot-rejected
I've recently stepped off of the design team carousel.  But I know how badly I wanted to be on it for a long time before it ever happened for me.  My applications for design teams have been rejected more times than I can count.  I've been rejected from American Crafts, Pink Paislee, Shimmerz, Tattered Angels, WRMK, Sassafras Lass, Hambly, Crate Paper, Cosmo Cricket, GCD, Graphic 45, Jillibean Soup, Collage Press…and plenty more! And more than once from many of them, may I add!

And you know what?

It hurt every single time.

But it's not personal.  This is business.  Think about it.  If you owned a crafty business, what would you be looking for in a design team?  I know what I'd want.

Design team members who…

  • Have an active blog (mutliple postings per week) with a *huge* blog readership.  Thousands of subscribers.
  • Get published in books and magazines all the time.  As important as the internet is, there are lots of people whose first exposure to product and crafting is a book or magazine, and getting your product into publication is very very important.
  • Can write killer tutorials.  Almost all manufacturer and kit club blogs are packed with tutorials.  Gone are the days when you could merely show off a pretty project.  People want to know how to do it.  You need to be able to take step-by-step photos, write good directions, or do tutorial videos.
  • Can take high quality photos.  I know I've said this before, but being successful in this day and age is as much about your ability to take a photo of your project as it is about being able to make the project.  Truth.
  • Surprise me.  It's all about getting noticed.  What gets "pinned" and "favorited" and re-blogged?  Projects with surprising elements.  Unusual think-outside-the-box type stuff.
  • Know how to show off product.  It's one thing to use product.  It's another thing to use product in a way that makes people feel like they can't use anything else.  And it's the latter that is design team magic.  Because that magic equals sales.
  • Have a proven track record that they can meet deadlines with quality work. I know that we all lament how the same people end up on every design team.  But, there's a reason.  Design team work is hard.  You're asked to publicly be excited about product that may not excite you.  You're asked to make amazing projects from items that may not be amazing.  And all of it has to be done on a strict deadline.  You may have just a few days to get a project done.  And it has to be great every single time.  It's unfair, but I'm more likely to trust someone who has already proven they can do it.
  • Have a vanilla and positive track record.  Let's face it, design team members are ambassadors for the company they represent.  People who are negative, get into public fights, have extremely public strong political opinions, or denigrate others, are not my first choice to represent my company.  I could write a book about the pros and cons of this one, but let's move on.
  • Are social media savvy.  Besides a blog, they post on Facebook and Twitter, but not in an aggressively self-promotional way.  And I want them to have lots and lots of friends and followers.  And it wouldn't hurt if they were active on message boards and forums too.

That's a lot.  And we haven't even really discussed artistic talent.  But don't ever forget, the one and only purpose of a design team is to sell product.  If you can't sell the product, or if the powers-that-be can't see how you could sell the product, then they don't want you.

The World is Full of Rejection

Quilt-rejected
And if the previous two categories don't apply to you, don't worry there are lots of other ways that your artwork can be rejected!

  • You post it online (your blog or an online gallery) and no one comments.
  • You share your artwork with your husband/best friend/children/mother and they…well, let's say they underappreciate it.
  • You enter a contest and don't win.
  • You apply to a juried craft fair and are rejected.
  • You apply to teach and are rejected.
  • You send artwork to a gallery for consideration and are rejected.
  • You tell someone you're an artist and they say you're not.
  • You put a video on YouTube and people hit the "dislike" button.
  • Your book/DVD that you worked so hard on gets bad reviews.
  • The product you developed doesn't sell.
  • You write a book proposal and it is rejected.
  • And the list goes on.

There is no way to avoid rejection.  Well, I suppose that's not true.  There is one way to avoid rejection: don't try.  But I'm not willing to do that.  I would rather try and be rejected than not try at all.

The sting of rejection is nothing compared to the sting of wishing I would have.

What do you think?  Do you agree or not?  And why?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Thank you for this post! It’s good to know that we are all in this together – and even though we don’t get selected, it doesn’t mean we suck (sorry to phrase it like that, but I’m tired and can’t think of a more descriptive or better word). I admire you, your work and your teaching skills.

  • Wow. Recently had a conversation with someone about this exact subject. I guess you’ve really got to be a risk taker, believe in yourself and your work and be able to keep getting back up. Thank you Julie for this honest post. Scary, but helpful. haha!

  • Totally agreed Julie. The first one was the hardest though, but it pushed me to another level with my artwork.
I see alot of the same stuff out there & I would hope that companies are looking for Out of the Box artists, but I’m sure they go with the same ole so they sell product.
I just keep making ART and once in awhile send in projects for publication, but I’m HAPPY making & selling art without being on design teams.

  • I like to remind myself that the pleasure is in the creating. After that its all just extra, I tend to ‘let go’ of a project mentally when its done. Detachment means less heartache on rejection and makes the acceptances less important too. This is a good thing and keeps me looking forward to the next project instead of back on what’s done.
Thanks so much for putting this out there, it’s heartening to know it happens to the greats too 🙂

  • It is all so true! You have to believe in yourself and keep trying over and over again, if being on DT’s or having your projects published is what you want. I have tried only a few times and got rejected each time. It gave me a bad feeling, like I wasn’t good enough for them. I stopped trying and decided to have fun just making art, enjoying the process. It is ok if nobody likes it, it’s all about the proces of being creative.
Thanks for sharing this with us, Julie! It gives me a lot to think about!

Bravo! Their loss if they don’t take you on girl! =)

  • Ha… as if I didn’t already love you enough!!! I love that you did this post.
I remember reading an article one time from several celebrities that talked about all the bad casting calls and / or rejection conversations they had to have with their agents…
It definitely takes a thick skin to survive in this industry.
If it wasn’t about the art … for me… it would be hard to keep going sometimes…
The art is what defines me and in the end what I want to be remembered for… (ie making the handmade card, having handmade decor in my house etc)
Also, it helps to surround yourself with people outside of the art /scrapbooking industries who don’t give a hoot an holler about a product or team… they keep my sense of humor and give me a purpose
Thanks for doing this article as I always run into so many people who say how discouraged they are etc..
Ironically, the published works of mine… happen to be my LEAST favorite of my creations!!! lol
Keep it up Julie.. you motivate me in so many ways!!!
P.s. when are your beautiful new “toys” going to be available at the stores?? I’m looking forward to some of the templates.
    Peace,
    Kim

  • Julie, what a wonderful post! I love your honesty. I agree completely with you. I’ve only just been published and would like to be published more but there are rejections. Rejection is part of life in so many ways. I didn’t try to get published for a year while a studied what publications are looking for and some were my stlye and some were not. Design teams are great and I have tried and been rejected but like you said its hard to promote a product that doesn’t inspire you. Why do it? My art tends to be artsy and not layed, cute and simple. Thank you again for this post. It was spot on. For us little people it’s nice to know our shining stars are human. I wish more were like you!

  • Well stated Julie. It is the same in sales you have to learn to accept a NO and not take it personally. you so have to promote and show all the time and develop a hard skin.
At this time it is getting overwhelming as the buyer to learn to ignore all the sales pitches on line. it sometimes feels like a frenzied hoard is nibbling at your feet when you get on FB and when reading some blogs

  • Julie, you wouldn’t be where you are now if you had been accepted by all the companies, publications, etc. that you tried for. We all know from life, that the roads traveled take us on paths we can’t always predict. The roads we never get on influence us too. And rejection doesn’t just come to us in our art lives. Meals we cook that no one but us like (I get this one a lot being an experimental cook). People that come into our lives and leave by choice. Rejection is part of being human and so are the emotions that go with it. So cudos to those companies that passed on you because I love your art just the way it is and the way you are evolving. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • As I read through your post today, I was so appreciative and then you noted “posting and no one comments” and I decided I should visit to say that I love this blog but I never post. I guess I thought that since I was keeping the blog in my Google Reader and checking out the posts all the time was enough to let you know I appreciate your art and your work. So just speaking up this time to let you know that I do, even if I’m not speaking up. Keep going!

  • You are one brave artist chick, Miss Julie !!! Brava for following your wishing heart and putting yourself and your wonderful art out there in so many ways!
Yes, there will be rejection everywhere, because not everyone will love or like what you are creating. But there are those who will fall in love with it !(Like me !) Creating art that you love and sharing it is an awesome thing. Learning to accept the sting of rejection from those that don’t get you or that don’t fit your style, but to keep on creating, well, that is the bravest thing of all ! Brava, Brave Artist Chick !

  • Excellent blog post, Julie. I appreciate your honesty and BRAVERY for posting all of this. I know we have all been rejected at some point and the key is to really NOT TAKE IT PERSONALLY (which is so easy to say – but it’s so true!). I have recently been rejected by a few craft fairs that are “juried”… The hardest part is not knowing why you’ve been rejected. What is it about your artwork that didn’t make the cut for that particular craft fair?? I am going to bookmark this post as it is so helpful and makes me feel better 🙂 Thanks, Julie.

  • Well said. Artists know that a piece that is rejected for one show may win first place in another. You delineated it quite well in your post. Thanks for putting this “secret” out there. Hopefully more artists will be encouraged to continue to create and put their work out there for the rest of us to see!

  • Most excellent post! I don’t submit creative work (yet) but I do share via flickr & my little blog. Now when I share, I always have it my mind that I am doing the creating for me, the sharing is just for fun though it is quite lovely to have comments if I do not get any that is just fine too. That took me a little while to figure out but once I did, it stopped me from looking back way to often to see if I had any comments now I am usually surprised by a comment which is much better than waiting for one. : )

I absolutely cannot be accepted if I never apply! I guess that is a self-fulfilling prophecy. I do appreciate you talking about it though because most people don’t.

  • Okay, I KNOW I have told you countless times how much I LOVE you!
One thing you are so human. I mean that kindly, lol. A while back, I wrote how you always act so grateful for getting published, etc … and I thought of you as a top elite scrapbooker and how I thought it was odd. Like you had just been discovered or something. This is why I sometimes feel like, yes, even I could do this. If I would try.
I have been on digital scrapbooking design teams, and it is such hard work. New photos, new scenes, in addition to what you just listed above. I finally have dropped off my others (I am still with Jill D-Zines – BEST digital designer EVER). Why am I still with her (besides thinking she is the BESTEST?) she is a slower designer (not a kit a week!) and she likes to experiment and dabble in other things. And I truly love her designs.

  • Julie, this has been a fabulous post. I too can relate. I did finally make some DT’s and discovered it isn’t for me. I got to teach and it’s just… ok. I have come to realize I love to create but only for myself. I can’t handle the rejection and that’s okay.
I think your work is absolutely amazing and original. I love how open and honest you are about your journey.
    You are FABULOUS!!!!!!!!

  • I appreciate how you write with an open heart and tell it like it is for you! I had desired to be published in a scrappy magazine but haven’t tried. Not due to fear of rejection, but it just doesn’t seem as important to me at this moment. It does sting when family or friends are not wowed by a LO that I just love, but most are not scrapbookers. Thanks again.

LOL forever. I’m guilty of that too. Sometimes more is more! Heh.
I actually *like* that you’re not like all the artists you see in so many of those magazines. It speaks more to my creative sensibilities. Something for everyone I guess.
Not for nuthin’, but you are the bravest blogger, artist, creative person I’ve ever seen. I really appreciate how honest you are. It’s what keeps bringing me back. 🙂 Take care, and come to Boston sometime. I’d love to take one of your classes. NY has too many ants in the ant farm. 🙂

  • Wow! This is a great post with a healthy view of rejection. It seemed to me that scrapbook magazines chose young, pretty mothers with an outgoing personality as their “Top 10 designers of the year”. As if they were really looking for spokespeople and teachers in their target audience rather than innovative designers. I no longer subscribe to them because they don’t have any new ideas. For inspiration I now look to blogs such as yours. I wish you continued success!
btw – Another touchy topic I never read about is “can you make a living at art?” Perhaps you can address that question sometime?

  • Always the teacher. Thanks Julie. I have never submitted and really haven’t wanted to because I know that I don’t want a “job”, I want to play when I want to with what I want to. I haven’t really thought about all the things that you wrote about here, but I have thought about some of them and know that any way you look at it this IS a job. It is not just a way to “fame” and “free stuff”. I think that those two things may hold more excitement for some than others. But depending on your thinking about those two things, the one thing for sure there is a cost and you have done a fine job of covering those costs in your post today. Thanks for sharing and as always, for keeping it real.

  • Excellent suggestions as to why things happen/are done – I have some suggestions to additions if I may be so bold =) :
pubs: Your project has to compliment the projects or AD that’s to be shown on the same page/opposite page.
DT: They actually want a diverse team and only have room for 2 C&S scrapbookers, 3 shabby chic, 2 oddballs, 2 mixed media, 2 w/high following, 1 newbie – etc…
Oh and the oddball one? I should know cause I feel like I’m one every time I’m actually taken in haha..
Take care, it was interesting reading through the comments as well 🙂

  • Thanks so much for being willing to share your experience and feelings Julie. It’s hard I’m sure to keep getting that rejection, but to be down the road in life and wish you had tried is worse. It took me years to learn this but at least I did. Hey, we like you just the way you are and the way you do it!

  • You are an amazing artist Julie. I know that I sound like a broken recorder but I can spot a Julie-original a mile away! And that says that you have a certain style to your creative madness! I’m glad you are no conformist. And that your art represents you and not what the industry dictates. You are a champion in my book! 🙂

  • Thank you for this. And for being so cool and honest about the “R” word. I have experienced this so many times, but you know what, the more I keep trying, the less it hurts.
Because so long as there are scrapbookers, artists, anyone really out there in the world, I have found that there will be, time and time again, a surprising compliment or positive feedback I never expected.
Keep it up, girl. You are such an inspiration. =)

  • I think rejection is a bummer, and it’s happened to me, probably like everyone else. However, I don’t let it get me down because 1) I know that there are people, however small an audience, who do enjoy my art; 2) No matter what the end result, I know I enjoyed making whatever was rejected; 3) Rejections don’t define me as a person or as an artist.
    Great post, Julie.

Nobody really reads my blog, which is pretty depressing, but I keep blogging and I know that someday when I make it big in the art world, then it will be a good thing to show that I have been blogging for sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long!!!

  • Wow! You’ve already gotten LOTS of feedback on this post. I just wanted to thank you for sharing with honesty your experiences with rejection…that’s not easy! I love the part where you share with us that there are lots of ways to be rejected; isn’t that the truth?! But you share a couple important, positive messages: that it’s natural to feel bad about rejection, but it’s important to keep trying. I think a lot of us need to hear that…again and again!

  • Thank you for putting this into words!! Rejection is a part of the game and I only recently realized that for my quilting and fiber arts I was deciding not to create/submit as a way of protecting myself from the dreaded “R” word. And only recently did I realize that I also then kept myself from acceptance; how silly to screen my own work like that, right? Inspirational message here and thanks for the shove! It’s coming at a good time too!

Sometimes, when you are just starting out, if someone gets rejected, they will just give up. Such an insightful post.

  • Julie, you don’t know me, but I adore you, and this post sealed the deal! I just wrote a post today about keeping it real, and part of what I talked about was getting over the “design team bug.” It’s all about the art for me right now, about learning and growing as an artist, and trying to deal with life in the midst of that. Rejection it’s a part of life, whether we are an artist, a salesperson, or on the PTA! I positively love how candid you are about it, and how, as usual, you are, simply, you. xoxo

  • Fabulous posting! And you mentioned everything I have always wondered about. Which leaves me with one question…why do the folks who are always looking for new submissions (magazines, blog sites, etc.) always encourage people to try and try…I’ve always been rejected and realize my style may not sell…but I’m practical. However, I worry about those who keep trying…who have no chance at all. It would be nice if someone could just be honest with them, otherwise it seems cruel somehow. You know?

  • Hi Julie, I have only just discovered your blog, but felt compelled to comment. Just remember that DT’s and publication don’t make you an artist. I have been on those DT’s and been part of magazine dream teams etc.. You don’t always get to be ‘you’. More often that not, they want you to create what they think everybody wants in magazines. After a few years of doing this, my passion for my art was gone. I turned my back on the whole industry and didn’t craft/art anything for years. It can feel soul destroying to be rejected, but it can also be soul destroying to get caught up in that game! Stay true to yourself and create what you love and makes you happy!!

  • I love this post and how honest you are. There was a time that I dreamed about being on a DT and didn’t realize all the specifics it comes with working on one. So now I just create for me and my enjoyment.
It has taken me months to find more creative art blogs to read and I have been thrilled with finding yours and seeing how your mind works and how you create. There is no doubt in my mind that you are very talented and creative, not boring and beautiful artwork. Thanks so much for sharing this with us and for inspiring me to be ME!!

  • oh thank the craft gods… honesty is so refreshing! Ya know not that i have that kind of talent but i would be so afraid of trying for those cast calls. you my dear are my heroin 🙂 i enjoy your ACTUAL AND TRUE one of kind designs and i love to watch you work, i’ve been a fan since you started on ustream (aka stampindipity). my thoughts are that this market is so saturated that one would be hard pressed to come up with a ONE OF A KIND ORIGINAL designs and how could one when everyone is using pre-made embellishments and products in the same way. i have seen DT’s that make the same thing over and over again, no offense DT girls your all very brilliant & clever and of lot of that work makes me want to go out there and buy every stinking lil embellie & paper line available. but then i remember that the only person that has to like my stuff is ME~ a lesson i learned from you julie 🙂 so i don’t necessarily feel like i have to keep up with the joneses. so i’m happy with what i do especially if it makes someone happy and i figure that everyone that was going to make it in this market already has..unless lighting strikes and i come up with some really innovative product and design of my own so until then i will enjoy what i make and i will choose what extra touch i will buy to make my projects whole. thanks for this it was a subject i thought about regularly especially when i would see all the calls on blogs and websites. love ya girl scrap happy 🙂

  • Don’t for a minute dispute what you’ve written, but it is the worst side of the of the scrapbook industry. I’m not a fan of the proprietary low-road you describe and I question that it is “good business”. If creativity is your business it comes with risks, but as a consumer, I hate that a marketing guru limits my choices or that for even a moment these people are allowed to tarnish the aspirations of a talented artist. . .I mean really aren’t we looking for unique, not just more of the same?

  • I really enjoyed this post – thanks for taking the time to write it. I’ve been published a time or two, and the novelty wore off right away. I guess I just don’t care because the things I make are for me and my friends and family. That said, I do understand it’s business or more for others. I think your post can help us all understand the mixed feelings we have had about rejection. Not trying? Well that’s just not an option!

  • I think that people grow.  If you look at my early stuff (check out the blog archives for some giggles) its miles away from what Im doing now.  And though I was rejected for everything in the beginning, Im glad no one told me to just pack it up and go home.  Who knows how someone will evolve, kwim?

  • Its a great question, Kathleen!  Todays (8/23) blog post sort of answers it a bit.  But Ill think of a way to talk about it from a more personal point-of-view.

  • Thanks Julie for posting this. So many of us can relate to this. I too have had many bad rejections that hurt, but also I have had really good experiences too. It took me a long time to get published at first and to get on my first manufacturer design team. Sometimes I feel like giving up but every time I get something published or get picked up for a new team – it makes it all worth it.

  • I came across your blog while looking for an apron pattern and found this post. I really needed to hear what you said! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I need to keep reminding myself that (in the words of Stuart Smalley) “I’m good enough. I’m smart enough. And doggone it, people like me.”

  • So true! And often the only way to get accepted is to be rejected a hundred times first! It’s good to have a moment of hurt and then move on to see what you can do next.

  • Thanks for this post Julie! It is so affirming. Just today I was working on something that I WAS REJECTING MYSELF! But I’m learning day by day to see those mistakes as opportunities (as I heard you mention somewhere), and to be willing to fail. The failure is a regular part of the practice… and I couldn’t live without practicing.
    THANKS!

  • thanks for sharing this! I’ve been rejected hundreds of times!! And it never fails whatever next thing I try is not well received. But, I must create! That is why I live. So it serves a purpose to first please myself, to please God, and make my family proud. Then I’m the biggest success I can be!

  • Julie,
Great post. Unlike you, I blog frequently about rejection as it is such an important topic to this thing called art! Not that I like being rejected, but now I have come to understand that without rejection I would not be the artist I am today. You have inspired me to address the subject again. Thank you.
And may you have a creative day!

  • Thanks for sharing this. Sometimes it feels like others make it look so easy that we (I) lose sight of the work that goes on behind the scenes. It’s helpful when artists open up and share these stories and make it feel more human. I appreciated reading this today!

  • Well, I agree with you, and that’s how society functions in general. You must fit a mold if you want to be accepted easily… But you know what? that is not right, and I hope you continued being truthful to your self because you are probably a visionary and ahead of our time so don’t expect those people to embrace that. Pelase don’t change; we need hard working people like you, who has an identity that can be faked nor bought! Best wishes!

So much great information in this post. Stuff I knew but it didn’t keep each rejection from stinging. Thanks!

  • Fabulous musings and a fine read… the world is indeed one of hierarchy. There is always someone better, more quirky, creative and ‘wanted’ out there. But sometimes that person might just be us too (although we never see that looking in our own mirror). We are so quick to substitute the desire to be heard with the need for success…they are not the same. Very glad you are all and nothing but you!
