If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here. Please read this post first. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. Just play! You can join the linky list for July right here.
There were some comments left on the last Art Journal Every Day post asking for this month's theme. I did respond to those comments, but I also wanted to let everyone know that there's never a theme for Art Journal Every Day. Last month I was doing an experiment with the faces, but it's entirely up to you what you want to do. And the reason for this is that I personally find a theme to be difficult. I don't know why, but I have trouble creating with prompts. So I wanted this challenge to be open and not put any restrictions on anybody's creativity. Hope that clears up any confusion!
For today's post I thought I'd share my top three absolute best and most useful art journaling tips.
1. Prep every page with masking tape down the center seam and a coat of gesso.
This prevents paint from leaking through the binding of the book to other finished pages. It seems insignificant, but it is the one and only "rule" I adhere to when I art journal.
2. When you have no mojo and no ideas, make pretty backgrounds.
Making backgrounds is just good clean messy fun. And by engaging in the act of creating one of two things will most likely happen: (1) Because your mind is empty and your hands are full of paint, you'll be struck by a great idea while you're playing, or (2) You'll have an awesome background prepared for when you are finally ready to create.
3. Try something new.
A few of my recent experiments:
I cut out a ton of squares and rectangles from a magazine, stitched all the squares and rectangles together, and then pasted it into my art journal. Totally new idea that I had never tried before. Love it! Definitely going to do it again!
I experimented with a really fat calligraphy nib. Wanted to try the alphabet. But it didn't work out. Hate the way it looks, but I learned. I will definitely try this again!
Experimented with some different paint colors and seeing what I could blend. LOVE the way it turned out! Definitely going to do this one again too!
In my opinion, you'll never improve if you keep doing the same thing over and over. Plus, I get bored really easily. So I'm always up for a challenge and trying something new. And amongst the failures, there are always lessons and fresh new ideas! And, of course, this is how I come up with new techniques to share and ideas for larger projects. By playing and answering the question, "What if…?" I see my art journal as a playground for my imagination. It is a workbook, meant to be experimented in and marked up. No perfect pages. Just artistic freedom and adventure.
So there they are. My three absolutely-guaranteed-never-fail-iron-clad art journaling tips! I'd love it if you'd leave your three best tips! Think what a great list of advice we can compile together!
Thanks for stopping by!

Congrats on on the column!!!! That is exciting news!! My 3 art journaling tips would be the same as yours because I learned about art journaling from you. I can give you my own 3 tips for inspiration.
1. Copy someone else’s page/idea that you like. By the time I get done, it looks totally different and completely mine.
2. Start with a image or text/story from newspaper, magazines or books.
3. Recreate a scene from childhood.

Thanks for the tips…as a newbie I need them. The one tip I use all the time is the masking tape idea but I’ve added my own twist…I use all my printed masking tape. My art journal is becoming my stash buster also!!! Soon I’m going to upload my journal pages ๐

Since I started art journaling very recently and really never passed the third (incomplete) page, my three rules would be:
– follow Julie’s rules and tips, specially the one saying “no need to finish anything or even like it”. I must practice on that a lot
– put art journaling on your priority list for at least 5 minutes
– don’t be intimidated by other people’s art. It’s not a competition
I really feel happy about the three (incomplete) pages I have – the second need a little more details and the third is still sketch only – but sad at the same time since I started doing this trying to have a complete page each and every time. Now, to Julie’s rules!!! I must follow the “at least 10 minutes” every morning…The background one is great.
Since your posts arrive to my inbox exactly by the time I come home from driving my husband to the ferry – and also because I feel so inspired by your work – now I have the idea of having my “5 or 10 minutes” while reading you… so, your emails will be my art journaling alarm =)
Have a great weekend, Julie!

Julie,
SOOOO excited about your column in CPS! Can’t wait to see it!
My three tips would be
1.Paint the background first (white pages are pretty scary!),
2.using a word can help get a page started like hope, peace etc, and
3. use a photograph as a focal point. I love photography so I love to incorporate my own pics in my journal.

I am a huge fan of CPS, and now it will be EVEN better with your column to enjoy! Congratulations! I’ve been “dabbling” in following prompts for my art journal, as well as following a basically similar style on all of the pages. It makes it “easier” to complete pages, but I’m starting to feel a little restrained. It’s been a good exercise for me, though. I think it will make me value the process I had been using prior to my experiment.

I just finished an art journal the other day, and unlike you, I loved the way the paint and ink soaked through to the spine… (photo is in the flickr group) I do prep the pages with gesso but I don’t tape it…
Congrats on the column Julie!

Congrats on your CPS column – I can’t wait to read it!
It’s so refreshing to see/read about how you go about art journaling. This form of expression just feeds my soul tremendously.
My three best tips:
1. If you don’t have an “idea” just sit down, pick out a paint color that feeds your moment, and paint the page. Keep adding other colors until you feel good about it.
2. Take a break while the paint dries. A cup of tea helps your soul revive. Depending on the time of day, a martini is a good substitute for tea!
3. Keep making layers. Don’t stop until you “hear the box click” and then sit back and enjoy your new creation.

Big congratulations on the column at CPS, that is awesome! Your 3 journaling tips are great too, I am so glad you go over things like that here. I tend to use the background one all the time, but will make note to try some of the others too.
I finished my first art journal every day with you and just added some thoughts about it and the bottom of this post: http://creativelenna.blogspot.com/2011/07/art-journal-one-is-done.html -Thanks so much, Julie. i will be starting another journal today ; ^ ) lenna

Excellent tips. I do 2 and 3 and have to start doing 1 more regularly. Thanks!
One thing that works for me is to sit and tear images I like from magazines when I don’t feel like doing anything else or I’m someplace where I can’t haul out my art stuff. When I’m stuck for an idea, I just leaf thru those images looking for common ground and pretty soon I have a few pulled out that get me going on a page.

Love the tips – i do use the masking tape and gesso unless I am drawing. But I do like how Paula Phillips unevenly lays the gesso down so she can wipe some off – but in my journal I might have to do that with the second layer of gesso.
As for the rest of your pages – thanks for the sneaks of your stencils!!!!!
And how did you mix those colors on the cloud one – were those watercolors or fluid acrylics or what? Thanks!

Great ideas – I think I may have to make a journal of ideas for journal pages! though I did not know about sealing the middle of a double page spread, I must do that from now on!
Plus – Any tips on protecting the centre of double page spreads on spiral bound journals?
Funnily enough I had just decided to do a new month of journal every day pages using the backgrounds I have been making for inspiration, so backgrounds suggestions are specially welcome!!

Congratulations on the column. I have a subscription and shall now look forward to its delivery even more, which I pretty much thought was impossible.

First, major congrats and a round of applause on the article in CPS – so glad i subscribe! Here are some tips: 1.I always have wax paper in my studio and basic tool bag. When journaling, i lay a piece of wax paper under the left and right pages to prevent any accidents. 2. I keep beautiful magzine clippings, labels, and all kinds of momentos and finds in a wrking notebook. I use repostionable adhesive so i can remove items whenever. It’s handy and organized and i can always find inspiration there. 3. Learn from the more wise artist!

I dont usually have a paint leak problem with spiral books. ย At most I might stick a piece of scrap paper behind the page Im working on.

The masking tape idea is brilliant! Iโve been working on my 1st junk journal with various papers and even with gesso some of the pages are starting to tear down the seams. Have no fear…thanks to your idea I can easily fix!
Love, love, love your work! Keep the ideas coming please for those of us who arenโt terribly artistic.
