Art Journal Every Day: A June Experiment Begins

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150 If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here.  Please read this post first.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  Just play!  Join the linky list for June right here.

I am trying an art journaling experiment for June.  Normally I do a very diary-like version of art journaling every day.  As long as I sit down for a few minutes and say something about my day, I can tick it off of my "to do" list.  For the month of June I've decided to do something a little different.  My big daily art journal has been sent away, as a spread in it is being published.  I was trying to figure out what to do about that.  And the idea hit me square in the face

I have drawn a grid of thirty boxes in one of my other smaller journals.  And every day this month I will art journal by drawing a face in one of the boxes.  Some days I may include text.  Some days not.  Some days the faces may be colored.  Other days, just scribbly pencil marks.  I've done the first two days already:

Grid

Those photos are actually larger than the sketches are in real life!  Here's a peek at the two faces with a pencil for scale:

Forscale
They're pretty teeny tiny.  And that's interesting for me to do too!  I normally work a lot bigger.

I think it's going to end up being a real cool art journal spread and I'm excited to see the final result!  What a luxury to take an entire month to finish a single spread.  It's shockingly hard for me not to fill in all the boxes at once! But I kind of love the idea and I'm looking foward to seeing how it develops throughout the month!

There are so many ways to do Art Journal Every Day.  What are you planning on doing this month?

P.S. I've got a really big secret that I'm dying to share!  Hints begin next week….

  • Love this idea Julie — sitting here grinning, probably looking somewhat maniacal, especially in the dark, illuminated by the sick white glow of my computer. Heck, this sounds maniacal, doesn’t it?! Trying to sound clever when what I should have said is that you always put a smile on my face! Can’t wait to see a month’s worth of faces. Have a great weekend!!

  • What a clever idea! It will be so cool to see it completed. I am going to try it in my journal, I just started and I am not good a faces, so I think I will do different colors and mediums in each square. And practice my doodles. thanks for a great idea.

  • A great idea. I have been doing a calendar journal (posted May’s just yesterday) where I can write or doodle whatever I want each day. It’s made up of several grids. I like the idea of drawing a face each day. I will try to incorporate that idea next month. This month is going to fly by with dance classes, packing and moving. Hope to get on track in July.
    Have a great summer.

  • I too, love your idea of drawing in the grid. It sounds different and fun -you go, girl! I just finished my first month of this project -yay! So right now, I’ll just continue what I’ve been doing. I learned to break a journal spread down into working on a background one day, and then taking another day or two to finish the spread -instead of trying to do the whole thing at once, eeep! Doing this project through you for 30 days has gotten me in the HABIT of art journaling, and giving myself permission to just do a little bit every day makes it work for me. Even though you told me to do this, I did not pay attention at first! I also enjoy thinking about what I might start with next-paint? paper? fabric? watercolor crayons? . . . This activity is feeding my creative brain, thanks, julie!
ps. congrats on your spread being published -whoo whoo!

I love the idea of making use of a grid so I think I give it a try for this month. I love drawing faces but I think I use the grid in a different way for this month of June…..
Thanks for all your lovely inspiration!

  • Your grid in a journal is a great way to go. I’ve been using those large desk top calendars (from Staples) as my work surface for 4 years now. And at the end of every month I have a nice record of what I’ve worked on, sprayed, stamped and techniques I learned. Since I started journaling I’ve been using each daily box to practice drawing & painting faces and designs. Though I didn’t like the lines in the faces. I’m going to try the journal grid this month! (can’t wait to hear your secret!)

  • Julie, I remember you showing us a page in your big art journal as you made it, the one found thru the sidebar “Art Journaling”. Do you have any more pages from it posted, maybe on flickr. I just want to see more of how you combine your actual “life journaling” with art, in a personal book. Thanks.

  • I have a slight obsession with grids. I love the idea of one a day faces. I haven’t had the discipline to do something like this every day although I’ve considered it many times. I did, once, participate in “Every day in May” sketching. But that was a few years back. Maybe some day. I love what you are doing.

  • Great idea, Julie! I look forward to seeing all the great variety of faces you will create. What an amazing spread you will have by the end of the month! It’s such an interesting project to spend an entire month on one spread. I don’t have the discipline at this point to do a “project” or “challenge” approach to my journal…I do like the idea of really focusing my journaling on my everyday life, and not so much on abstractions. I guess that will be my goal!

  • Last November, I challenged myself to “draw a face” every day. I had not ever done anything like it before, but it was SO MUCH FUN! I can totally relate to your June project, and really look forward to seeing it progress!
I love my November faces and have them in a book so they can be looked at and laughed at and loved by all who want to see.

  • I love these little faces! I used to do grids for each month in my journal and I would draw something in any squares that didn’t have an appt. or something in there. I love grids and I like the idea of all the squares being of the same general subject like all faces. This would be a good tie in with the 100 faces project I’ve been wanting to do from The Drawing Lab book.
I hope we don’t have to wait long to hear your secret. I’m not good at waiting!

  • Thanks, hon. Yes, that does help. Additional question, do you do Morning Pages? If so, do you do them in your Art Journal?
