Stamping Bella: Julie’s Perfect Circles

Welcome to day one of what will (hopefully) be an awesome series of stamping inspiration and giveaways!  For seven days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday — we're skipping the weekend & there's a special unrelated post on Friday night coming at you) I will be giving away one of my brand new stamp sets!  But let me back up for a moment.

In case you missed the announcement I have teamed up with Canadian stamp manufacturer, Stamping Bella, to release some really cool stamps specifically aimed at art journaling.  Of course you can use them for lots of different things, but my intention was for you to use them when you art journal!

Each day this week I will be featuring one of the seven stamp sets that have just been released.  If you'd like to win the featured stamp, leave a comment on that day's post answering the question of the day.  You must answer the question of the day if you want to win!  On Thursday, May 12 I will post all seven winners!

And, of course, if you want to buy any of the featured stamps, you can find them all here.

So, which stamp set to feature first?  I thought we'd slide into things gently with "Julie's Perfect Circles."

Circles-1
Yeah, so they pretty much just look like circles.  What's the big deal, right?  Well, I am super passionate about circles!  Obsessed, even.  I think the simplest shapes can create the most wonderful designs!  As art journalers we are always trying to create our own backgrounds and this set of four circles lets you create so many background designs:

Circlepatterns
Plus the circles are so awesome for journaling inside of!

Emily, who owns Stamping Bella, and I chatted for a while about whether the circles should be sketchy or "perfect."  I was an advocate of perfect.  Why?  There are so many ways for me to get imperfect circles (toilet paper tube, pill bottle, doodling them myself, etc.), but very few ways to get perfect ones.  And one of the things that really works for me and my style is the mixture of perfect and imperfect.  I love geometric stamps and stencils because then I can be all messy and free form.  It's the push and pull that creates an interesting contrast and is visually stimulating!

Here's a quick video of me playing in my art journal (I had a little camera glitch towards the end, so you'll see the cut) and creating a pattern with the circle stamps:

Supplies used:

  • Mister Huey Spray Ink from Studio Calico
  • Jet Black Archival Ink from Ranger
  • Julie's Perfect Circles Stamp Set from Stamping Bella
  • Gesso by Golden
  • Koi Watercolors by Sakura
  • China Marker (black and white)
  • Psychedelik Patterned Paper from Sultane/InfoCrea
  • Pitt Pen from Faber-Castell
  • Ranger Heat It Craft Tool
  • Claudine Hellmuth Studio Acrylic Paint from Ranger
  • miscellaneous: toilet paper tube, paint brushes, water, pencil eraser, tag, fortune cookie fortune

And here's a peek at the journal page:

I also wanted to point out that the circle that is the second from the smallest circle creates a perfect scalloped frame around a 4×6 photos.

Allphotos-sm
And two versions of what to do with that scalloped frame:

Photo-sm
Photo-sm (By the way, I'll be featuring that paint splat stamp later in the week!)

So what do you think?  Are you excited about circles?

If you'd like to win a set of the circle stamps, here's the question of the day:

What do you like most about stamps?

Leave your answer in the comments section of this post!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • What I like most about stamps are that they are reusable! I can use just about whatever medium I want to add color and definition before and after I stamp the images.
And I’m with you on the perfect circles vs. sketchy ones…so glad they went with perfect!
    Thanks for the inspiration!

  • What I love about stamps are that they are so versitile, you can use some of it or all of it, specially with circles, I’m glad you went with perfect, because without the help of stamps, nothing I do would be perfect, cause I cant even draw a straight line without the help of a ruler, I’d rather use stamps than anything, thanks for the video, and the inspiration..

  • I LOVE stamps. Too scared to actually admit how many I have. The thing I love most about them is that they can be so versatile. They can be used on all different things i.e. paper, wood, fabric, acetate etc. I also love that in art journalling, they don’t have to be stamped perfectly as it all adds to the effect.

  • I like that stamps are reusable, you can flip the images (with a handy flat rubber surface), and you can layer them for a variety of looks. I agree, stamps help my imperfect art look more polished

  • Like most commenters before me, I’m kind of addicted to stamps and love to add at least some stamping to every project. I love most that you can stamp with ink, with paint, with markers, gesso…you can stamp “perfectly” or deliberately not so much. You can mask off a part of a stamp, you can combine several stamps in new ways. In other words, the versatility of stamps is endless.

What I love most about stamps is that they can be used again and again, and yet in such different ways that they don’t have to be redundant. Especially when they are basic shapes like circles. • Wonderful creations! I love that stamps can add extra depth & interest to a project using them directly onto the backgrond then layering other items on top 🙂

  • Thanks for the inspiration! What I like most about stamps is that they are premade art ready to go! You can add detail or use them as a focal point for just about any project with so many mediums. Or sometimes they are the finishing touch! So versatile, even if you aren’t an artist, you can still create beautiful projects almost effortlessly.

  • I like the versatility of stamping images. I can use the entire stamp or just a corner; stamp an entire background in no time at all or just put a finishing touch as an additional layer. The spirograph was my favorite toy as a child and I still try to create similar images with my stamps.

I was surprised to see that they were Julie’s perfect circles as you do use the imperfect on many of your creations. I like the mix of imperfect and perfect and the frame is cool.

  • Wow – my NO.1 passion is STAMPS!!!!!!
I simply can’t have enough of them. I am always making deals with myself “now that is enough for now”……..well…….that is until another yummy stamp comes along……LOL!!!
I love the fact that you can use them over, and over again and in so many different ways. Different to a sticker or rubon that is one use only.
Thanks for the chance to win.

  • Because stamps come in a variety of characters, sayings, whimsical, etc, the possibilities are endless as to how you can use them. I use them to make cards, journal backgrounds, finishing journal pages, stamping envelopes, letters…their use is never ending. Without stamps I couldn’t have sent our wounded soldiers or veterans the thousands of cards for the different holidays throughout the years. I couldn’t afford purchasing thousands of cards for them but by using stamps it became affordable and doable. Stamps Rule!

    1. they get me past the fear of the blank page – making that first mark
    2. they give a structure that can inspire me to take off in a totally new direction
    3. they are quick and easy to use, so they are time saving
    4. they can be used in lots of different ways – with colours, embossing powders etc – so that can be as unique as each and every artist!
5, You cannot use them up!

I can leave it as a black-and-white type image. I can bend stamps too, like the clear stamps. Or I can stamp it multiple times, like using tree stamps to make a forest. So many possibilities! =D

  • I really like how there’s a bit of perfection (the perfect printed image) vs. imperfection (HUMAN ERROR- lots of it on my part!,uneven ink, pressure issues, etc.) at play whenever I stamp something. And it’s always a terffic surprise (well, not always terrific) when I lift the stamp up and see what the result is. More than often, I’m forced to go with it, and make it work, which is good for my creative muscles!

Thanks so much for the chance to win, love them!

  • What I like most about stamps is that their use will be uniquely mine, with my own colors, my own arrangement, but allowing me to make use of someone else’s drawing skills. And I can create the exact same thing over and over for invitations, etc. Just too fun! And circles have a great deal of symbolism and movement..so perfect for so many things! Thank you!

Thanks ~H♥~

  • What do I love about stamps?
Sometimes I think that they are the lazy mans way to create….I could draw the images myself but inside I stamp them so I get to the fun part, coloring and painting quickly! Sometimes I think that I like them because I can easily change the vive of my artwork just by picking up a new stamp. Sometimes I think it is just another wonderful way to be creative! However, when I really sit and think about it….I use to paint and scrap book exclusively. After a while I started making my own scrapbook paper (similar to art journaling) then someone introduced me to stamping and it opened new doors to my creativity and off I flew!!! So in the end I love stamping because it made me grow as an artist. I have been fooling around with art journaling and I think I am close to being ready to walk through that door next!!!! I just love growth!

By the way, I am a circle fanatic, too! A circle is the best example of eloquent simplicity!

  • I like the idea of being able to take a single image and use this perfect image in a million different ways – different color combinations, different backgrounds, different textures, stamp with ink, stamp with paint, use the image once, use it multiple times… You can do so much with stamps.

Love doodling in them(thanks to you demo-ing doodling on tv). Love reading your blog and seeing your art. Thanks for your inspiration.

What do I love most about stamps? Well, sometimes a “picture” is worth a 1000 words (well, maybe not that many in this case). Sometimes, when you’re stuck and don’t know what to say, the perfect little stamped image can portray that “thought” – or even inspire you to say something that you originally didn’t know how to say.

  • I most like the simpler and/or iconic stamps, and the way they can give a random “mechanical” element to a hand-made page. They add one more dimension to a highly personalized art form — the journal. I don’t care for stamps as “the main thing” unless they’re handmade by the artist, but I love pre-created stamps as a part of the whole.

  • They give me freedom to create and they also give me designs and lettering I can’t come up with on my own. I think they are such a great art tool. I have seen so many people who do not think they are creative, feel creative when using rubber stamps!

  • I like rubber stamps because I am not very good at drawing and stamps make me an “artist” in any style I want. I can be whimsical, literal, abstract, geometric — you name it. I like to color, make layouts, add bits of this and that and in the end I come up with an original piece of art every time! Thanks for the video and the opportunity to win one of your stamp sets!

  • Stamps are magic – that’s what I love! You can transform plain paper into something beautiful without having to draw it yourself. And there’s that “presto” feeling when you lift up the stamp and see the image.
I really loved this art journal video – amazing! Those circles really came to life. And I find it incredible that you created something so filled with movement and texture from the circles that are so geometrically perfect. Now that’s magic 😉

  • You can: use them over and over; change the color of ink or paint to match your project; stamp them right on your project or cut them out and layer them; emboss them; combine them for a different look; use a glue pad and foil or glitter the design; use them to add texture to a mixed media project. All of this and much, much more……

  • I like the fact that they give so much dimension to a journal page, so simply AND it doesn’t matter if the image is not stamped perfectly.
Thanks for all the inspiration, you are a gem.
