I am recommending to people who don’t have blogs to try out flickr as a way of sharing during Art Journal Every Day!  There are people who know a lot more about flickr than I do.  But I thought that I would share the very basics of setting up a free account and uploading some images so that you can share your images with the world.

Setting up Your Account

When you get to the site, look for the pink and grey “Create Your Account” button on the upper right…

Step1
…and click on it.

A window will pop up.  You can sign in with your Yahoo ID or Google ID or create a brand new Yahoo ID.

Step2
Once you’ve signed in, flickr will help you create a new flickr ID.

Step4
Once  you’ve created your account flickr will greet you with easy to understand directions on how to get started.

Step5
You don’t have to do any of that.  Note the “Upload Photos & Video” link on the far right.  You can go ahead and start uploading immediately.

Uploading Images

If you have a digital camera or a scanner, you can upload your photos to flickr!  Once you’ve gotten the image into your computer (i.e. off of your camera or from your scanner), click on the “upload photos and video” link.  You’ll be taken to a screen that looks like this:

Upload1
Click on the “Choose photos and videos” link and a pop-up window will appear.

Upload2
Choose the image you want to upload from your computer and hit “open.”  Flickr will show you that it has the image…

Upload3
…and you can choose whether you want to upload more images (use the blue “add more” link) or just this one.  You can also choose the privacy level of the image.  Once you’re done, click the pink and grey “Upload Photos and Videos” button at the bottom of the screen.

Upload4
The green check marks mean that image or images have succesfully uploaded.  Click on the blue “add a description” to fix the title of your image and write a few words about it, if you want to.  It’s not necessary.

Upload5
Flickr automatically names the image whatever it was called on your computer.  You can change the name and write in a description if you’d like to.

Upload6
When you’re done click the blue save button at the bottom of the page.  You’ll be immediately re-routed to your photostream.

Upload7
And your newest images will be a part of your gallery!

FAQs

These are some of the flickr questions I most frequently get.  Feel free to ask your own in the comments section.

Q: How do I link to my flickr page?

A: Log into flickr and then click on the tiny triangle next to the word “You” along the top of the page.

Step6
A drop down menu will appear.  Choose “Your Photostream” and you’ll be taken to a page that has all the images you’ve uploaded on it.

Photostream
Copy that url.  That’s how people can find you.

Q: How do I add my artwork to the Art Journal Every Day flickr group?

A:  Join the group by clicking on the blue link that says “join.”

Joingroup
Click on any image in your Photostream.

Photostream
When you’re taken to the screen for that page, choose “Add to a group” from the “Actions” drop down menu.

Addtoagroup
In the pop up menu that appears choose “Art Journal Every Day” and click “done.”  And you’re done!  It’s that easy!

Q: Can people comment on my flickr photos?

A: If your images are public, people can click on them to see an enlarged version and leave a comment.

Clickonapic
They can also “favorite” your image so they can easily find it later.

Favorite
(See the little star for favorite?)

And if they click on the triangle next to “share this”…

Shareit
…a drop down menu will appear and they can choose how to share the image.  Or you can.  A lot of people upload all the images for their blog to flickr and then use the “blog it” function to add it to their blog.

If you do not want people to be able to comment or blog your images, flickr lets you block them from doing so.

At the top of the page go to “You.”  Click on the triangle and drop down menu appears.

Account1
Choose “Your Account.”

On the next page that opens choose “Privacy & Permissions.”

Account2
Scroll down and you will see the pink title “Defaults for new uploads.”

Account3
Click on the blue edit button to change any of the defaults.

There’s a ton more that flickr can do.  But that’s the super duper basics to get you started sharing.

Have fun!
