The One Where I Painted a Feather

Pencil Lines Sketch number 211:

I was very much inspired by the grid in the background.

Really, Julie?  How on earth were you inspired by the grid?  I don't see it here!

Well, I'm so glad that you asked!

I started thinking about that grid and it made me think of paper weaving.  Then the paper weaving made me think about the spots of color that would make up the squares in the grid if I wove paper together.  Then those spots of color turned round.  Then I decided they needed to be punched up with color and voila!  The scalloped circle grid that makes up the base of this layout was born!

I was also influenced by the idea of three pictures, but after that the layout kind of took on a life of its own!

I'm enjoying feeling freer these days, less constrained by having to use certain products.  I feel like I'm heading back to my roots in some ways — painting little embellishments and cutting them out.

I love how the stitching down the center of the feather turned out.  A feather seemed like the perfect embellishment for this page because it's so representative of lightness and airy-ness, not to mention the whole tickling you with a feather thing!  There's always lots of laughter from getting tickled!

I cut the heart out of the tag and then added my title, journaling, and the paint splats.

The top part of the title was made using the Martha Stewart alphabet punch.

The word "laugh" was painted with watercolor paints.

My impulse was to super ink the tag and make it crazy, but I think simpler is better.  I remember reading something on Ali Edwards' blog a long time ago where she talked about how as she got farther along in her scrapbooking journey she found that she wanted to simplify more and more.  I'm never going to become a super simple scrapper — I love layers and layers way too much — but I am learning to edit a bit more and do less for a bigger impact!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • The tag is amazing! I was wondering the other day on my blog if I was in the “simple period” – it’s in the air maybe?
