Can I tell you how delighted I am to see so many people excited about art journaling?!  Yay!  Keep the questions and comments and pages and ideas coming!  And remember, you can do it!

“Every child is an artist.  The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”  –Pablo Picasso

Some answers to questions:

Q: Where did you get that mask of the girl/woman that you out your To Do list in?

A: I made it from a magazine page!  I made this video for a guest post on Ali Edwards’ blog last year.  It explains how to do it.

There are three techniques on the video: toilet paper tube stamping, magazine silhouettes, and paint splattering with a toothbrush.

Q: What is the right size journal to get? I know it’s personal preference, but the big one seems too big, but the little one seems too small…

A: Ah, a Goldilocks question!  A lot of people make their own journals because of this very same question.  And because watercolor journals are expensive.  Linda has some great posts on how to bind your own journals together.  That said, I’ve been eyeing this journal:

0056138000000-ST-01-Nujabi-Watercolor-Journal Handmade Watercolor Journal – Features 25, 8¼ × 10¼” handmade 130 lb sheets of smooth cold pressed, 100% cotton, acid-free watercolor paper. Overall size 8½ × 10½”.  It’s on sale for $19.99 and I may have to buy it….

Q: It was nice you put a Google translation bar to your blog, very helpful … you can tell all your artist friends to do the same? We, the “foreigners”, we’d love it! We would learn more.

A: For those of you who might not know, you can translate my blog into any language by clicking on the drop down menu on the upper left corner.  You can also translate my blog or any blog using the following two methods:

  1. The Google Chrome browser has a translator built in. If you navigate to any site not in your own language a little bar comes up in your window.  It detects the language being used and asks you if you want to translate it into your own language.
  2. If you subscribe to a blog through Google Reader, under “Feed Settings” you can choose “translate into my language” and that blog will be automatically translated into your language!

An excellent thought:

Chel of Ginger Blue left the following comment:

what’s funny is I read one of the pieces as saying “ruin four or five everything” (before zooming in on it and realizing there was more to it!) and that was actually an AWESOME message for me- I’ve been working on a series of paintings and making giant mistakes on each one trying to find the right colors and shading. It sort of gave me permission to keep experimenting without worrying about not getting it right the first time.

Her comment made me think of one of my favorite quotes:

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.  Art is knowing which ones to keep.”  — Scott Adams

Some inspired work to share:

Amazing post from Sandra of “Sandra Scrap Creaties” about how Art Journaling Week has inspired her.  Check out what she has made…

…and go and read her post about being inspired.  It’s lovely!  I think I’m going to steal those leaves.  I can see putting those all over something very soon! And don’t you love her color combos?

Amy at “Little Treasures” went wild for circles and stamped her art journal and a whole stack of cards and envelopes with one of my favorite tools: an empty toilet paper tube!

Please leave links to your awesome art journaling work inspired by the posts this week!  I’d love to see what you’re up to!

I’ll leave you with a quote that pretty accurately summarizes why I love art journaling so much.

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.”  — Georgia O’Keeffe

  • Yes, art journaling week IS awesome! I have a couple of moleskines that are journals but not watercolor…so I’ve been stumped about how to use them and don’t really want to buy more stuff. So imagine how excited I was to find your idea about taping together a few pages and gesso-ing them. Thanks, Julie, for the inspiration. Can’t wait til the weekend to try some of the other ideas.

  • Great question/answer post and beautiful art journaling! Hey Julie, I am amazed at how PROFICIENT you are with technology as well. You have a great blog available for translation, too!
I lament to say that I am a dinosaur when it comes to technology. I would love to share all of my art work that you’ve inspired. As you may remember, I am a high school teacher. I would also love to share my students’ journals because they were also inspired by you. But, alas, I don’t have a blog. I’ve tried researching this idea online and at my local bookstores. It’s “sooo” overwhelming! Way too much to learn!!!
Thanks again for this amazing art journaling week!

  • I’m with Sandra! make this week last longer, please, please, pretty please!!!!!
I wasn’t able to make anything (I have senior guests around), but you are the first one who really inspired me to have my art journal. I went to Inspired (Donna’s event… you should be teaching there 😉 ) and I was touched (and cryed during classes, believe me…), it was liberating, but your AJWeek makes me feel to go into real action!
Loved everything, loved the quotes, your great video (as always)… thank you!!!!
