Remember When I Used To Do 2 Page Layouts?

Well you probably don't remember because it was before I started blogging.  In the not-too-long-ago, I used to only make two-page layouts.  I couldn't imagine how it would look to have two different and uncoordinated one-page layouts facing each other in my album.  Here are some circa 2005/2006/2007 two-pagers (and note that almost none of them are every day layouts, they're mostly all event layouts):

So you may be wondering, why am I sharing these two-pagers?

I'm sharing them as a simple reminder to worry less.

Worry less about the product I'm using.

Worry less about showing off the coolest new techniques.

Worry less about design principles.

As much as some of these pages make my skin crawl from a design point-of-view, I am so delighted to have each and every one!  Not only do they tell stories that I only vaguely remember and would have fully forgotten without the journaling, but they tell an artistic tale too — the story of my artistic journey.

I remember creating each and every one.

I remember discovering paint.

I remember learning how to mix and match patterned papers (with plenty of missteps along the way).

I remember my obsession with ransom style journaling.

I remember studying magazines to try and figure out how the designers made their layouts look so good.

I remember playing with layering.

I remember not being able to scrap without a square punch and a paper trimmer.

I often get obsessed with having things be "just so" and when I look at these layouts the truth it that it doesn't really matter.  I'm looking at the photos and reading the journaling.

For all the paint vs. pixels, artist vs. scrapbooker, published vs. non-published, freestyle vs. clean&simple…it's all about the same thing isn't it?  Collecting and sharing those precious memories.  So time to worry less and journal more.  Definitely a thought I'm going to take with me tonight when I head off to a crop with the Manhattan Scrapbookers.

Hope you have a great weekend!

P.S. I thought I'd share a bangs update.  They're maybe sort of growing out.  Thank goodness!

  • Yes! I needed to hear that this morning…so encouraging…so true..so liberating! Thanks for that. And I’m glad I’m not the only one who cringes at early LOs from a design perspective but love them from a memories perspective. Sigh. Love the blog as always…

  • Those are wonderful LO’s in their own right: memories, colors and wonderful journaling!
In the end, I suspect that that is what folks will remember about our albums.

  • You are so right … looking back at my older layouts … so many memories captured and bring up that exact moment. Which would have been gone otherwise.
My favorite layouts are my earlier ones, actually. After learning ‘HOW’ to scrap (so to speak) I think I lost my realness. Now I seem to force it. A lot. anyway, another great post!

  • I used to only do 2-page layouts, too! Now it feels strange if I do a 2-pager.
BTW – you’ve taken some amazing trips. Galapagos?? What was that like? Seems like someplace you’d go in a dream…

  • I love these 2-pagers! I too haven’t done many two pagers and after seeing your post I guess I too need to worry less. I have to admit I feel the single pagers let me be a little more creative but maybe I need to step outside of the box for the 2-pagers and do something different.

  • You are oh so right Julie! I’m so glad to have those oldies but goodies. Yes the CM stickers and bits of CS can make me cringe, but the memories make me feel all warm and fuzzy and happy!

  • Hi Julie,
With or without bangs, you’re still a cutie! Thanks for sharing those great 2-page layouts. Please tell us more about your conversion to single page layouts.
I am still new to scrapbooking. I have made three sets of 2-page layouts since the start of the year. Obviously, this isn’t working for me. The thought of decorating such large real estate is overwhelming. I just stare at the large space and do nothing. Sigh.
I’ve been thinking about single page layouts lately, but the thought of having two unmatched pages side by side doesn’t sound appealing.
    Any suggestions?
