When I sit down to do a scrapbook layout I try to think about where the journaling will go.  But I don't always do that.  Sometimes I just put together the photos and the embellishments and then get stuck when it comes to putting the journaling in.  And the journaling can really change the entire look of the layout.  Here is a layout with the journaling moved all around.

She-JournalingPlacement-sm
Where do you think it fits?

For me…

  • Option #1 is too square.  One of the reasons I put the flower on the layout was because I wanted to break up the square-ness of the whole thing.
  • Option #2 is fine.  The journaling fades completely into the layout.  You don't even notice it.  Definitely an option.
  • Option #3 weights the layout to the right, which I like.  Asymmetry is always more interesting than symmetry.  But on the other hand, it's kind of creating symmetry with the flower and I don't like that.
  • Option #4 just feels weird.  I don't like those two extra journaling strips in the third row.
  • Option #5 is still weird.  But I think it's weird good.  I like the tension between the decorative block and the strips.  Asymmetry is there which rocks!  But is it too weird?  I don't know.  Definitely an option.
  • Option #6 is lovely and classic.  I like the organic nature of using the stem as a grounding element for the strips.  It does sort of square up the layout, but it maintains some asymmetry with the jagged edge and by extending farther left than the circles.  Definitely an option.

So now I have three possible options.  How do I choose?

I like to take risks and try uncomfortable things.  Options #2 and #6 are too easy.  So, I'm going to go with option #5 and embrace the weird.  Here's the final layout:

She-sm You can see more of the layout's details here.

What do you think?  Did I make the right choice?

  • The “right” choice is what YOU like and what appeals to you. I’m such a linear person that I like option 6 the best, but that’s just me!

  • what a cool peek into your process! i love how it turned out, especially with the mist and paint. i also really like #6 – the journaling and the “she” gives a strong base.
i’m working on a blog post about journaling too.

  • In first looking at all the options I was drawn to #6. In reading your analysis I’m realizing how helpful it is to put more thought into layouts I make 🙂 Generally, if it is pleasing to my eye, I do it. But then I guess that’s why I turn to you for inspiration… I rely on others to show me what’s possible. My brain is not quite to the point of see what’s not obvious…yet :o) But I’ll get there… I just need to let go…to be more free!

  • I just love that you shared this little mini-problem solving tutorial for us. I’m pretty classic so 2 and 6 were definitely my top picks but you gave us some great ways to think outside the jounaling box. Thanks, Julie.

  • love your post and appreciate you sharing your creative process. I use to really struggle with where to put my journaling and even write less so that it would fit “aesthetically” on my page. Lately, I am really into hidden journaling because I don’t have to figure out where to put it and can just have fun with the page design. I like your final page and think I too would have gone with weird.
