A couple weeks ago when I was teaching at The Ink Pad, one of the women who works at the store was rocking a pair of green and purple shoes. It turns out that she painted them green and purple! Well, I went home and looked at my shoes and thought, what I can turn into something fabulous?
Yay! New sneakers! And they were so easy to do!
I can't wait to rock out my sneakers! And I've got big plans for other styles – plaid, floral, etc. If you want to try painting your own shoes, I have some tips:
- Base coat with gesso. While the leather parts of the sneaker are easy to write and/or paint on, the non-leather parts are difficult.
- Use fabric paints. This is non-scientific, but since fabric paints hold up to washing and are flexible, I'm thinking they're going to hold up to the elements too.
- Seal your shoes. There's probably a right thing to use, but I just slapped some matte multi-medium on there.
- Make sure that all working parts (holes for laces, etc.) don't get filled with paint. After all, you do want to be able to wear these shoes, right? After each coat of paint I used a toothpick to clear out all the holes.

I did my shoes about a week ago and they were canvas slip ons. I just painted them with acrylics and voila. I sealed them with gel medium like you. I love mine also. I feel like splashing paint on them all the time.
