A Tutorial for National Scrapbooking Day!

The first Saturday in May is National Scrapbooking Day!  Yay!  To celebrate, I thought I'd share a quick artsy layout for you to make!  Here it is:

Step-by-step directions below.

Supplies:

  • 12×12 Cardstock: White and Black
  • Prima Felt Voila (I used #881917)
  • Scrap Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glimmer Mist (Lemon Zest, Popsicle, Tutti Frutti, Jazz Blue)
  • Heat Tool (optional)
  • Manila Folder
  • Craft Knife
  • Cutting Mat
  • Paper Towel
  • White Flowers (I used Prima #300883, 540296)
  • White Brads
  • 4 small photos 1.5×2" or one large photo 4.25×3.25"
  • Black Alphas (I used Prima #537388)
  • Black Journaling Pen (I used a nib pen and ink)
  • Corner Rounder
  • Adhesive

STEP ONE: Mask and Spray

Cut a piece of scrap paper into a circle (it doesn't have to be perfect) and place it on the left side of the white cardstock.  Lay the black Felt Voila over it, along the right side of the circle.

Firstmask
Spray in the center area with the yellow mist.  Hold the Glimmer Mist bottle about a foot or two from the paper for a light mist.

Sprayyellow
Spray outside of the yellow area with red mist.

Sprayred
Spray the edges of the paper with blue mist.

Sprayblue
Now, I want the flower part to be really defined, so spray that area with yellow and red.  Hold the spray close to the paper in order to focus the spray.

Sprayflower
Let all that mist dry or dry with a heat gun.  When you remove your masks, this is what you're left with.

STEP TWO: Heart Positive

Draw a  heart in the center of half of a manila folder.  Use a craft knife to cut it out.

Cutheart
Take the heart you cut out and hold it over a piece of paper.  The side facing you should be the side that does not have pen marks on it.  While holding the heart vertically, spray it with Glimmer Mist.

Verticalsprayheart
Holding it vertically will allow all of the ink to drip down the heart and blend.

Coloredheart
Let dry or dry with a heat gun.

STEP THREE: Heart Negative

Replace the scrap paper circle over the white circle on your cardstock.

Putcirclemaskback
Place the heart stencil we created (by cutting out that heart) along the left edge and spray with Glimmer Mist.

Sprayheart
Move the stencil around.  Alternate using red and yellow Glimmer Mist.

Liftheart
When you're satisfied, remove the paper circle.

STEP FOUR: Color the Flowers

Holding the Glimmer Mist close to the flowers spray them with several different colors, trying not to overlap the colors.

Sprayflowers
Let dry or dry with a heat gun.  Put a brad in the center of any flowers that don't have a center already.  Here's a look at the final arrangement once everything is dry:

STEP FIVE: Cut and Color the Felt

Cut the white felt Voila just below the flowers and spray it with Glimmer Mist.

Trimandsprayfelt
This is what it looks like when it's all sprayed:

Sprayedfelt
Let dry or dry with a heat gun.

STEP SIX: Put it all together

Adhere photos, felt, and flowers are shown.

Addelements1
Add manila folder heart and title.

Addelements2
Add your journaling.  I curved mine around the photos.

Addjournaling
Don't forget to add the date too!

STEP SEVEN: Trim and Finish

Trim half-an-inch from each side of your layout.

Trim
You can save those inky strips to use on another project!

Use a corner rounder to round all four corners.

Punchcorners
Adhere the layout to black cardstock.  The black border looks great, but adhering the layout to another piece of cardstock has an added benefit — it stops your layout from curling quite so much!
