I *love* free motion stitching. If you don't know what it is, it's a type of quilting in which the needle becomes like a paintbrush and you move the fabric beneath it to create any image or shape you want!
You can see the major key to free motion stitching in the photo above. I taught a class at The City Quilter on Friday that was all about free motion stitching, and the photo above is of the whiteboard in the classroom. It's what the students saw when they walked in. Do you see the difference?
Answer: I didn't remove the marker from the whiteboard when drawing the face on the right. General rule of thumb: anything you can draw without lifting your marker can be free motion stitched.
Here's my class sample:
Black thread on green fabric. Can't get much more simple than that! Here's a closer look at some of those faces:
And now a peek at some student work! First up is my 12-2pm class:
And now some of the Friday night ladies (6-8pm):
My evening ladies *loved* the quilting gloves I showed them. (You can see them wearing them in the photos above. Basically, they're gloves with rubber fingers to aid your "gription" of the fabric.)
Finally, we always do a show and tell for the first 30-45 minutes of class (as seen below)…
…and I wanted to show off some of my students' stellar work here on the blog! Some of it is class projects from earlier classes and some of it is simply their own genius!
There's kind of a blue theme going on there, huh? Not to mention the face that TWO students brought in "Girl with the Pearl Earring" themed pieces. Odd, right? Sometimes it's just "in the air," know what I mean?
Thanks for letting me share! Have a lovely day!

WOW, you did an amazing job on the faces! I just purchased a free motion foot for my machine and my mom taught me how to do it…I am still “wet behind the ears” when it comes to free motion…..but you are an absolute inspiration! Thank you!

Amazing work!!!! I just started practicing a few weeks ago, I made the Remains of the Day journal and a pie carrier (in my link), and I LOVED it, but it’s difficult to actually draw like you did!! Amazing!!
