Totally inspired by this post, I tried my hand at a self-portrait in my art journal:

Self-Portrait

The good news is that when I called my husband in to take a peek, he said (rather tentatively), "Is that you?"

The bad news is he then said, "Your face is more squished up than that."

The good news is that he pointed at the eyes and said, "But those are definitely your eyes.  You got that right."

The bad news is he then pointed at the photograph I based the painting on and said, "Look, there's like no space between your nose and your lips."  He pointed at the painting, "And here there's tons of space.  It's too long."

The good news is that there isn't exactly "no space" between my nose and my lips.

The bad news is that he's right about the painting.

Sigh.

They say practice makes perfect, so I suppose I just need to keep trying!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I love the colors you chose and I definetley see the mouth and eyes 🙂 I love husbands who say what they think – mine does the same. At the very same moment I want to kill him but then I’m glad he said what he had to say 🙂

  • For a first time, that’s great! It’s interesting that your “style” carries over into that too with your use of colors and direction. I like how you captured the shape of your nose in that blending of colors. And haha, my husband does the same thing.

  • You did get the eyes quite right (with a sparkle in them)! Be kind to yourself, you’re making progress each time you do this type of art.

  • Well, I think it looks beautiful! And after all, it is YOUR self-portrait, so usually it’s how you view yourself. And it definitely has the sparkle in your eyes!
Is your husband an art teacher? 😉

  • This is too funny! I wish my husband would tell it like it is sometimes. He’s more the “moral support” type. My daughter, on the other hand, is the Simon Cowell of the house.

  • Kudos to you for painting a self portrait. I shudder to think what mine would look like. I think yours is fantabulous! My favorite part is your cheek bones–they are spot on. And I love the colors.

  • Practices does make perfect, but I like imperfection for self portraits especially! I haven’t done any in so long, but I used to love doing them, especially with just pen and ink in contour line drawings. Mistakes add so much more than they take away!!
