Welcome! I’m so glad that you’re here. Here’s a quick run down to help you get oriented:
- I blog Monday – Friday and sometimes on Saturday or Sunday.
- Every Friday I host “Art Journal Every Day.” Feel free to add your own link if you’ve art journaled that week!
- You can read more about me here.
- Explore the Tutorial Archive here.
- See a complete listing of all of the stencils I’ve designed for The Crafter’s Workshop here.
- If you’re not sure how to leave a comment, follow these instructions.
Here is a list of other Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Do you have an e-mail list? Or some way to subscribe to your blog?
A: Yes! Look at the column on the left. There is a yellow box that says “subscribe.” Click on that and enter your e-mail and you will receive my blog in your e-mail every time I post.
I also have a monthly newsletter, which is different from my blog. It’s updates sent out once a month. You can sign up for that here.
Q: Can I take a class from you?
A: You can find my teaching schedule here. I also have a number of online classes and you can see a list of the online classes I’m currently offering here.
Q: How long will I have access to an online class I purchase from you?
A: Until I die or stop paying for a web account. Essentially, forever. I don’t plan on closing the classroom, so don’t worry about it.
Q: The password you gave me for the online classroom doesn’t make the videos play.
A: True. The password for the classroom is for access to the classroom only. The password for each of the videos is posted directly above each video at the end of the sentence that reads, “The password for the video is….”
Q: Do you sell your work?
A: I just opened an etsy shop. You can also find some prints and aprons and other fun things here (along with instructional DVDs).
Q: If I make something with one of your products should I send you a photo of it?
A: Absolutely! I love seeing what people do with my products! And there’s a Balzer Designs flickr pool here, for you to share your images!
Q: What kind of paint and ink do you use? What’s your favorite art journal? What spray ink do you recommend?
A: I get asked about my supplies a lot, so here is a visual guide to my most used supplies. Click on any of the images to purchase that supply online.
Q: Where do you live in New York?
A: I live in Manhattan, right in Times Square. You can see some photos of my neighborhood and some information about my city life in this post.
Q: Where can I shop for scrapbooking and art supplies in New York City?
A: Here’s a quick list of where I shop:
- Lee’s Art Shop: This is where I shop the most because it’s in my neighborhood. They sell fine art supplies, crafty supplies (felt, glue), some scrapbooking stuff, furniture, lighting — secret tip: If you want to find the kids section and a small selection of knitting goods, take the elevator to the 5th floor.
- The Ink Pad: Packed to the rafters, this tiny gem of a store offers a million different stamps and all the stuff that goes with stamping and papercrafting. They have some scrapbooking supplies, but the focus is definitely on stamping.
- M&J Trimmings: I can get lost for hours in all the wonderful ribbon and buttons and trim at M&J. It’s worth a visit if only to stare. Though, I’ve never managed to leave without something exquisite!
- Tinsel Trading: It’s supposedly Martha Stewart’s favorite craft shop. I haven’t been to the new location, so I can’t attest to the layout, but they carry amazing stuff! Lots of vintage trim and beautiful reproduction ephemera. Great stuff and totally unusual!
- Dick Blick: There is an outpost of the popular online store in NoHo (lower Manhattan). Two floors of every art supply you ever lusted after.
- Utrecht: There are two Utrechts in Manhattan. It’s a nice chain with a wide variety of art supplies, recently purchased by Dick Blick.
- Michaels: There is now an outpost of this crafting mega-store in Manhattan! I’ve heard folks complain that it’s smaller than a regular Michaels. True, this is Manhattan after all. But it’s great for lots of inexpensive crafty basics!
Here’s the one thing you have to know before you shop at any of these places: they charge NYC prices. So be prepared to pay more then you do at home (although for non-North Americans this may not hold true…).
Anyway, I hope that’s helpful! If you have any places to add or any opinions about the places I’ve mentioned, just leave them in the comments!
Q: Where should I eat in NYC?
A: Everywhere and often. 😉 In all seriousness, here are some of my favorite places in Manhattan:
- For Dim Sum, go to Jing Fong.
- For steak, go to Quality Meats. I especially love the steak tartare and the corn creme brulee. Save room for dessert!
- For expensive, but worth it, fancy, go to Jean Georges.
- Inexpensive and fun atmosphere = Vynl.
- Best pecan roll ever is at Bouchon Bakery (and the rest of the pastries are pretty tasty too)!
- I’ll always say yes to ramen and pork buns at Ippudo.
- Love the chocolate chip cookies at City Cakes.
- I like the sushi at Natsumi.
- Korean BBQ at Don Bogam is awesome, but pricey. But, it’s in the middle of Korea Town, so you’ve got lots of options there.
- Best cheese fondue and chocolate fondue is at Artisanal.
- Brunch at Norma’s is always delicious or you could sneak off to Burger Joint (in the same building).
- I think the best burger is at Ruby’s Cafe.
Q: What does your studio look like?
A: My studio is the second bedroom in my two-bedroom apartment.
I did a pretty in-depth posting in three parts in April 2010:
Q: Do you have formal art training?
A: Nope. I’m a self-taught artist!
Q: What do I need to get started art journaling?
A: A notebook, a waterproof black pen (I highly recommend the Sakura Pigma Micron), and some kind of colorant (paint, markers, colored pencils, etc.). That’s it! Also there’s lots of good information here.
Q: Can I use your images on my blog?
A: You are welcome to use an image from my blog, as long as you credit me by name, with a link back. If you’re at all in doubt about proper usage, feel free to e-mail me. I’m very nice.
Q: How can I find you on TV?
A: Check the Scrapbook Soup TV website to see when the show airs in your area!
Q: What kind of paper you use when doing your regular 12 x 12 layouts? I’m having trouble with my paper warping and not being flat. A lot of the techniques seem to be very wet, and your layouts never seem to look warped.
A: For really wet applications I use watercolor paper. Or sometimes I will take the warped cardstock and stitch it to an dry piece of unwarped cardstock and that seems to flatten everything out.
Q: Just wondering if there is an angel policy on your stencils?
A: If you use my stencils when you create art, you are absolutely welcome to sell that art. However, you cannot license that art without prior written permission from me. If you’d like to obtain permission, send me an e-mail sharing the work and filling me in on the details of the licensing deal.
Let me know if you have a question that isn’t answered here!

Hi,
I wanted to know something about your online classes: when we buy them, can we access them anytime or is it limited in time? I’m thinking about the Technique-a-Palooza one. I don’t have a lot of time to focus on it in a limited time, so it’s important for me to know that.
I really love what you do, it’s really inspiring and it totally makes me look at everything around me with different eyes!
Thanks for everything you do, it just rocks!

I’ve been watching you on Scrapbook Memories. I can’t tell you how much you have inspired me and “freed” me from the idea of perfection. I love the design principles and the visual definitions. I also LOVE the doodling. For my small scrapbook world here in Oklahoma, you are revolutionary. Thanks for sharing your amazing creativity with me!

Hi Julie,
I just wanted to let you know how you have influenced and inspired my teeny tiny crafting world. I’ve never really considered myself creative or artsy, but I have always enjoyed playing with the different supplies and materials. You know how easy it can be for a ‘non-artist’ to depend on ‘stuff, ‘ I’m sure. But then I saw you on Scrapbook Memories on PBS and I realized that I should be using the stuff to create, not just decorate. Now, I have fallen in love with my pens (Sakura, of course), oil pastels, watercolors, acrylics, etc.! It is so relaxing and non-stressful to just doodle, draw, and paint until I see what I want to see! I design when I lack the right color or feeling of patterned paper for my project, and use doodles and zentangles to enhance photographs and personal journals (I don’t blog as of yet, but I will!). So thank you, Julie, for helping me recognize my creative side.

Hi Julie, Great Ustream class today. I was wondering if you could reccommend a brand of paint brushes. My daughter is really showing a lot of interest in painting, primarily watercolor. I am a firm believer that paying more for better quality tools will improve the chances of her being sucessful. I learned that very early on when I finally invested in a grown up sewing machine. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Julie,
I did read that you mostly use the Sakura Pigma Micron pens for your Journaling.
They are great, however they “refuse” to write over the watercolor crayons (e.g. Caran d’Ache)
What do you use in this case?

Hi. I want to do the Art Journal every day starting in February (tomorrow). I tried to join with the linky thing and can’t because I don’t have a blog or a webpage. I can’t figure out how to joing without one. I am considering starting a blog but am not quite ready yet. How do I join the class? Thanks SO much!

Julie, I tried your Mixed-media technique that you showed on Quilting Arts Show 613. I am wondering what I can use to seal the watercolor painted lady before I applique her to the quilted background.
Thank you.

Roberta: I would use a spray sealant rather than something you have to brush on, as the brushing it on might disturbe the watercolors. Truth be told I havent sealed any of mine and they seem to be fine just hanging on the wall.

Just re-read your posting about the classes at BizzyB, and I was wondering about the make your own “hand-made tape” part of the class. Where can I find out more about this process? Thanks.

I love your creativity. So much so that I ordered almost all of your stencils. I received a notice that there was delay and then nothing more. I really would like to have them. What’s the next step?

I’m in the middle of Collage fast & furious! Going a little forward and a little back to catch it all. But I am distracted by one thing. In the DVD you say you are working on a Teflon sheet – it’s so large and beautiful!! I’ve been searching the web but can’t find anything larger the 18X 24. Can you direct to a supplier?

Hey Julie! Sorry if this has been asked before, but what kind of watercolors do you suggest for a novice user? I bought like a super duper cheap pan set…mostly for splattering, but they take a long time to dry and when I “think” they’re (splats) dry…they aren’t.. even after heat gunning. Any help is appreciated!

Quick question on your stamp carving class. My birthday is coming up at the end of the month and your class and the supplies for it are at the top of my list. But then I saw the workshop you have at Cloth Paper Scissors, so just wondering what the difference between them is. Are the projects that are worked on different? Do you cover different things/techniques?

Hi, Julie!
Did you attend Brown? I saw an article in a ’98 issue of the Brown Magazine by a Julie Fei-Fan Balzer about Zeta Delta Xi. I feel that that isn’t a very common name so I’m just curious. If that was you, I’m a Brown student now and I’m pledging Zete in the Fall. Your article really made my day!
Thank you.
If that wasn’t you, sorry to waste your time and your work is amazing!

I have a puzzles inspiration and was wondering if you will be releasing a cd with your stencil designs. They have a paper lace cd which I have been using to create stencils and I create my own. There are alot of computer dye cutters out there and I was wondering if you were going to tap into that market?

Hi Julie,
I think your art is so inspiring, and I love that you are self-taught. I was wondering if you had any tips for beginning artists? I have a desire to learn more about art and different techniques, but I’m not sure where to start. I can’t really take any formal art classes right now, so most of my art is done by experimenting with different mediums (mostly watercolor, acrylic, and sketching). Anyway, just thought I’d shoot this question out there and see if you have any tips or advice (or if you’ve written a post on this already).
Thanks so much!!

I think the best thing to do is exactly what you are doing — experiment and play and discover what you like. I have also found it useful to look at art I like and analyze why I like it and bring those elements into my own work.

I watched the tape on the lacy pop up cards. I do not have any die cut machines and would like the designs you showed. You said they would be on ‘the’ website and I can’t find them. I’m not computer savvy, but would like the designs (heart) so I can make the cards by hand. Thank you.

I watched a video about your class “Crafting on the go” and am interested in learning more about the stitchwork you had on the hoop. Do you offer any classes on how to do that type of stitchwork or can you recommend another source for me?

I love the large hand embroidery project you are working on. How do you keep your work so flat. I have a problem with the fabric shrinking the more I stitch.
Thanks much!

Hi Julie, I am a new owner of a Scan and Cut 650 and I am really enjoying your great videos. I have learned a lot watching them. I ran into a bit of a problem with my scanning mat, though… the machine does not recognize it, it keeps kicking it back out. I have searched through many of your videos and I do not find anything that addresses that particular problem. Any thoughts? It is a new 12×24 scanning mat and I did go into settings and changed to the correct size. Thank you.

I have just purchased a Scan n cut machine and am enjoying using it.
I am inspired by your easy to follow videos.
However, I want to cut out the internal shape of different animals that are painted into a busy surround scene, leaving an animal shaped hole to see through for a child’s book.
Anything I have seen scanned and cut so far, defaults to a deinite outside line.
If there is a URL that you could link me to for info I would appreciate it.
Thank you

Julie, I hope that it is okay to ask you this… I’m a huge fan of the scanNcut. I’ve wanted to- but hadn’t been able to- purchase it since it’s first release! When I saw the special pricing for DesignNcut I couldn’t resist!! Even though it was specified that its not a scanNcut just another brother die cutting product. So… now that I have it home I’m thinking of returning it and purchasing the ScanNCut2. I wanted the machine mostly for scanning my lettering and my art. I’m your humble opinion, Should I just keep the DesignNcut? In other words…. would you be willing sometime soon to do a “what are the differences” piece on the DesignNcut verses the ScanNcut?
You are great! And I’ve enjoyed following your work 🙂
Thanks!

Hi,
I’m trying to decide which Scan & Cut to purchase. (I wasted $ on original Cricut when it appeared. I can’t afford to overpay or throw away funds again.) I called Brother to ask questions which were not answered on their comparison or FAQ pages. A 50 min wait left me with a woman who said only the fussy cut was possible. So, please help me! (will use for stamp images, not fabric)
* Do you know if the CM 100DM & CM250 also cut different levels of increments out from the image to create?
* Is the pen ink smear safe for use with Copic markers and/or watercoloring?
* Do all the models have software updating capabilities?
Will greatly appreciate your assistance,
Lori Jean

Hi Julie,
I’ve watched several of your scanncut videos & am wondering which machine you would recommend for the wood veneer. The material that I have is not adhesive backed & some is double thickness. Also which blade you would use?
Thank you so much!

I use an Intuos tablet that is no longer made. This is another one of their tablets, affordably priced: http://amzn.to/2DyMdKd

I would like to add clever sentiments to my hand-stamped cards, but I don’t have a stamp with that phrase. Is that something the Brother Scan n Cut can help me accomplish? Can the pen print it for me if I create it on the canvas, or is there a better way? Thanks.

I have a question not on here. It’s about creating stencils with Canvas workspace and Scan N Cut. I know mostly what to do but how do you add a “bridge” to connect parts for the stencil such as the center of an O?

Hello, I left a comment with this same question but I will try it here as well.
I am trying to make a 20 block quilt for my grandson and dont want to have to use my regulars sewing machine to sewout the appliques. I want to be able to use my scanncut dx to scan a commercial appliques template and then send the design and finish out the applique on my 10 needle brother embroidery machine. I have the BES4 software on my pc. I have scanned the design as a whole and the individual parts for cutting. What do I do now. How to send it and get it to applique each design with the placement stitch of each layer and then tacdown stitch and final satin stitch for each layer. Also do i need to enlarge each cut piece so that the cutting line is now the tackdown line etc. I have looked everywhere for videos for this process and cant find it.
Thank you 10 million times for this process. Diane
