WINNERS!!! (And a bit about the Bead&Button Show)

True Story: On Saturday morning, I went to bed at 7am.  (I had a lot of stuff to do before I left for the Bead & Button Show, so I stayed up to do it.)  I set my alarm for 9am.  I woke up at 10:20am.  I had somehow turned my alarm off and gone back to bed!  Well, my flight was at 11:30am.  I flew out of bed, brushed my teeth, got dressed, packed my cosmetics, grabbed my computer and was hailing a cab by 10:26am.  When I got in the cab, I actually said to the driver, "I'm going to LaGuardia and I'm late.  There's a big tip if you can get me there quickly."  I was standing at the gate by 10:58am.  (If you know anything about NYC traffic and geography, not to mention airport security, this is a miracle.)

As a result of my hurried exit, I left (among other things) my camera at home.  So, I've been taking photos with my iphone, which is great, except for in low light or when something is moving.  So, I apologize for the terrible photos, but they're all I've got this week.

First up, the winners of some fabulous Balzer Designs stamps!  Woo Hoo!  My Mom flew to the Bead&Button show today to keep my company for the next few days.  So, I had her pull some numbers from a can.  She chose…

Well, my favorite way to use stamps are as a background (perfect!) or tiny little accent. That woodgrain is phenomenal! Beautiful design!!

So, Julie and Shawna, please e-mail me with your snail mail addresses and I will send you your stamps as soon as I get back from the Bead&Button Show!

In the meantime, here are a few photos from the class I took for the last three days: Fundamentals in Glass Bead Making with Frank Scott.  Basically, we learned how to make glass beads using a dual source torch.  Here's a photo of Frank doing a demo:

You can see all the glass rods in front of him and all of us looking sexy in our didydium safety glasses.  In fact, here's a quick photo I snapped in the ladies room mirror:

You can see my didydium glasses around my neck, a very fun apron I made, and that tree pendant is something I made about two years ago.  It's silver sheet that I sawed and then soldered together using an acetylene torch.  Finally, here is a quick view of our classroom:

Class was held in the University of Wisconsin's wood shop.  You can see that each student has a torch, mandrels, quenching can, and plenty of glass.  I'll try to take some photos of the beads I made in the sunshine tomorrow.  This hotel room has almost no light, so all my photos are blurry.

Until then!

  • holy cow – i can’t believe you made it to the airport in that amount of time. that is UNREAL and I would have been freaking out the entire time. If I’m not 20 minutes early, I consider myself late … so good for you for not having a melt down in the taxi like I would have done.
That class looks so cool – we have the Corning Glass Museum near us and they offer glass classes that I’ve always wanted to take – I’d love to do something artistic like that!
